Ghrelin and leptin regulate appetite and energy homeostasis in humans and rodents. The effects of different nutritional factors on ghrelin and leptin secretion are not well documented in rats. Therefore, the aim of our study was to investigate the effect of a high-fat diet on plasma ghrelin and leptin levels and on adiposity. Twenty male Wistar rats, body weight 220-260 g, were used in the study. Rats were randomized either on a standard chow diet (n=10) or on a high-fat diet (a mixture of nuts) for ad libitum 11-week period. Body weight was measured once per week. At the end of the nutritiona

Background and Aims: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most prevalent chronic liver disease and frequently improves after bariatric surgery. Conventional postoperative follow-up is mainly based on weight-loss outcomes, such as Body Mass Index (BMI), excess weight loss (EWL), total weight loss (TWL), and routine biochemical parameters, which may not fully characterize hepatic fat response. Ultrasound-derived fat fraction (UDFF) provides a quantitative non-invasive assessment of hepatic steatosis, while DXA-derived visceral adipose tissue (VAT) reflects cent

UNLABELLED: Weight change was an influencing factor of osteoporosis and fracture in a controversial way. Based on a nationally representative data, we found that weight change from obesity in midlife to non-obesity in late adulthood was associated with a reduction in the risk of osteoporosis and wrist fracture in male, but not in female.
INTRODUCTION: Obesity is usually recognized as a protective factor to osteoporosis and osteoporotic fracture. However, it is still unclear whether historical weight status was associated with the risk of osteoporosis and fracture. The aim of this study was to

BACKGROUND: Chronic fluid overload is common in maintenance hemodialysis (HD) patients and is associated with severe cardiovascular complications, such as arterial hypertension, left ventricular hypertrophy, congestive heart failure, and arrhythmia. Therefore, a crucial target of HD is to achieve the so-called dry weight; however, the best way to assess fluid status and dry weight is still unclear. Dry weight is currently determined in most dialysis units on a clinical basis, and it is commonly defined as the lowest body weight a patient can tolerate without developing intra-dialytic or inter-

BACKGROUND: Dosing levothyroxine (LT4) in athyreotic patients after total thyroidectomy may appear straightforward to manage. However, robust evidence to guide therapy remains lacking. This study aimed to provide further information on the efficacy of fixed, weight-adjusted LT4 dosing initiated immediately after surgery. MATERIALS: Consecutive patients were enrolled at a single institution applying a standardized postoperative protocol: all cases initiated LT4 therapy immediately postoperatively at dose of ~1.6 mcg/kg, undergo their thyroid function test after six weeks, and receive subsequent

This study examined the change in weight at 6 months of naltrexone/bupropion (NB), a combination pharmacological therapy for weight management, in real-world practice in Canada. The study was conducted through an observational, retrospective, single-arm chart review of adult patients who attended the Wharton Medical Clinic in Ontario, Canada, between 2018 and 2021. The patients had a body mass index ≥30 or ≥27 kg/m2 with at least one weight-related comorbidity. They were prescribed NB, titrated from 1 (8 mg/90 mg) to 4 tablets daily, along with lifestyle modification. Approximately 52% of 468

Cervical traction is a physical therapy procedure frequently used to treat cervical disk lesions, cervical spondylosis, and cervical facet joint lesions. We have observed rare cases of side effects in elderly patients, but not in women younger than 30 years. In this pilot study, 96 young women were randomly divided into 3 groups to study the effect of cervical traction with different traction weights on blood pressure, heart rate, heart rate variability, and correlated autonomic adjustment. Cervical traction weight used was 10% of the patient's body weight in group A (n=32), 20% in group B (n=3

BACKGROUND: Adult obesity is a well-established risk factor for endometrial cancer. However, little is known about the association of endometrial cancer risk with body size early in life and weight change during adulthood. We investigated whether women with greater early-age body size or with greater weight change during adulthood have an increased risk of endometrial cancer.
METHODS: We analysed data from a population-based case-control study of endometrial cancer conducted between 1997 and 2001 in Shanghai, China. Included in this analysis were 832 endometrial cancer cases aged 30-69 years

BACKGROUND: Cord blood adiponectin and leptin concentrations are associated with birth weight and adiposity. Birth size and rate of infant weight gain are associated with future obesity risk. However, it is unclear whether biomarkers reflecting the intrauterine environment are predictive of infant prospective body composition change.
OBJECTIVES: To examine whether cord blood adiponectin and leptin are predictive of neonatal adiposity and fat mass (FM) accrual to 3 months of age.
METHODS: Participants (n = 36) were healthy African American infants. Leptin and adiponectin concentrations were m

Psychological stress and excess glucocorticoids are associated with metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. Glucocorticoids act primarily through mineralocorticoid (MR) and glucocorticoid receptors (GR), and compounds modulating these receptors show promise in mitigating metabolic and cardiovascular-related phenotypes. CORT118335 (GR/MR modulator) prevents high-fat diet-induced weight gain and adiposity in mice, but the ability of this compound to reverse obesity-related symptoms is unknown. Adult male rats were subcutaneously administered CORT118335 (3, 10, or 30 mg/kg) or vehicle once daily.

BACKGROUND: In people, the cardiovascular effects of obesity include systemic hypertension, cardiac remodelling and both systolic and diastolic dysfunction, whilst weight reduction can reverse myocardial remodelling and reduce risk of subsequent cardiovascular disease. To date, variable results are reported in studies of the effect of obesity and controlled weight reduction on cardiovascular morphology and function in dogs. This prospective study aimed to assess cardiac function, heart rate variability, cardiac biomarkers and body composition before and after weight reduction in pet dogs with

The aim of the study was to investigate the circannual rhythms of leptin and ghrelin in the blue fox, a variant of the endangered arctic fox, in relation to its seasonal cycles of body mass, adiposity and food intake. The effects of long-term fasting and exogenous melatonin treatment on these weight-regulatory hormones were also investigated. The leptin concentrations of the blue fox increased during the autumnal accumulation of fat and decreased during the wintertime and vernal weight loss periods. The leptin levels peaked 2-6 weeks before the maximum values were observed for the body mass in

ICI 176,334 is a nonsteroidal anti-androgen that has been shown to selectively block peripheral androgen receptors in rats and is presumed to do so in chickens. In chickens, androgens stimulate secondary sexual characteristics (e.g., comb), but inhibit growth and the immune tissues. The present study examined the effect of dietary ICI 176,334 (5 or 25 mg/kg body weight) on growth in chickens in the presence or absence of testosterone treatment (as 1-cm long silastic implants). Treatments began at 2 wk of age and continued through 6 wk of age. Testosterone alone reduced body growth (average dai
