Succimer for treatment of lead toxicosis in two cats.

Two cats from a single household were examined because of neurologic abnormalities suggestive of central vestibular disease. The owner had been renovating her 150-year-old house for the preceding 3 months, and renovations included chipping and sanding of old paint from windowsills and stair railings. Lead toxicosis was diagnosed on the basis of history and concentrations of lead in blood and urine. Both cats were treated with succimer. Treatment was not associated with any adverse effects, and both cats recovered completely. Ingestion of old paint from house renovations is the most common sour…

Epidemiology of Bartonella infection in domestic cats in France.

Blood samples were collected between February and June 1996 from a convenience sample of 436 domestic French cats living in Paris and its environs and were tested for Bartonella bacteremia and seropositivity. Seventy-two cats (16.5%) were Bartonella bacteremic, of which 36 cats (50%) were infected with Bartonella henselae type II (B.h. II) only, 15 cats (21%) were infected with Bartonella clarridgeiae (B.c.) only, and 11 cats (15%) were infected with B. henselae type I (B.h. I) only. Eight cats (11%) were co-infected with B. henselae and B. clarridgeiae (B.h. II/B.c.: five cats; B.h. I/B.c.: t…

Primary and metastatic carcinomas in the digits of cats.

In the period 1993-1998, digital carcinomas in 64 cats were examined. In all animals primary complaints were painful digit(s). Eight cats had a primary squamous cell carcinoma which involved one digit or two adjacent digits of one leg. Fifty-six cats had metastases of a pulmonary carcinoma in the digits, and in general multiple digits of different legs were involved. In many of these cats metastases also occurred in other organs, including the skin and muscles. No primary sweat gland carcinomas of the digits were seen. Primary squamous cell carcinomas of the digits were characterized by cornif…

Peripheral vestibular disease associated with cryptococcosis in three cats.

Peripheral vestibular disease referable to otitis media/interna was the main reason for presentation in three cats with cryptococcosis. In two cats, Cryptococcus neoformans var neoformans was isolated from the tympanic bulla. In the remaining cat, otitis media/interna was considered to be secondary to occlusion of the auditory tube by a nasopharyngeal granuloma associated with a C neoformans var gattii infection. This report emphasises the importance of maintaining an index of suspicion for a fungal aetiology in cats with signs of otitis media/interna, particularly in countries with a high pre…

Acute renal failure in four cats treated with paromomycin.

Acute renal failure was diagnosed in 4 cats receiving paromomycin orally for treatment of infectious enteritis. All 4 cats responded to fluid therapy and recovered normal or near-normal renal function; however, 3 of the cats subsequently became deaf and developed cataracts. Toxicoses were attributed to a combination of an excessive dosage of paromomycin and absorption of the drug across injured intestinal mucosal epithelium. Pharmacokinetic studies are needed to further define the disposition of paromomycin after oral administration to cats.

Campylobacter species in cats and dogs in South Australia.

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter enteritis was the most frequently notified infectious disease in Australia in 1996 and Campylobacter species have been associated with extra-intestinal infections such as purulent arthritis and Guillian-Barré syndrome. Dogs and cats are known to carry campylobacteria and contact with household pets have been implicated as possible sources of human infection. OBJECTIVE: To provide information on the species of campylobacter carried by cats and dogs in South Australia. METHODS: Faecal samples were collected from stray and owned cats and dogs and feral cats. Campylobac…

Escherichia coli as a pathogen in dogs and cats.

Certain strains of Escherichia coli behave as pathogens in dogs and cats causing gastro-intestinal and extra-intestinal diseases. Among the five known groups of diarrhoeagenic E. coli, namely enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC), enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC), shiga-toxin producing E. coli (STEC) and enteroaggregative E. coli (EAggEC), only EPEC and ETEC were clearly associated with enteric disease in young dogs. ETEC isolates from diarrhoeic dogs were found to be positive for the heat-stable enterotoxins STa and STb but negative for heat-labile enterotoxin (LT). Can…

Brain pH responses to acetazolamide and hypercapnia in cats.

The involvement of increased brain tissue CO2 tension in acetazolamide-induced brain acidosis was investigated by comparing the brain pH response to acetazolamide with that to hypercapnia. CO2 and pH sensors were placed bilaterally into cerebral white matter to 15 mm depth in cats. Group 1 cats (n = 9) breathed spontaneously, and in situ brain tissue PCO2, and pH (PbCO2 and pHb) were measured after intravenous acetazolamide administration (20 mg/kg). Group 2 cats (n = 9) were paralyzed and ventilated mechanically, and the changes of pHb were investigated by adjusting the ventilation to maintai…

Respiratory-related pharyngeal constrictor muscle activity in decerebrate cats.

Respiratory-related activity of the hyopharyngeus (middle pharyngeal constrictor) and thyropharyngeus (inferior pharyngeal constrictor) muscles was determined in decerebrate, tracheotomized adult cats and compared with the electromyographic activity of the thyroarytenoid, a vocal cord adductor. During quiet breathing, the hyopharyngeus and usually the thyroarytenoid exhibited phasic activity during expiration and tonic activity throughout the respiratory cycle. Respiratory-related thyropharyngeus activity was absent under these conditions. Progressive hyperoxic hypercapnia and progressive isoc…

Sonography of the musculoskeletal system in dogs and cats.

Sonography of the musculoskeletal system in dogs and cats was undertaken to evaluate the application of this imaging procedure in orthopedics. In most of the patients a 7.5 MHz linear transducer was used because of its flat application surface and its resolving power. The evaluation of bone by sonography is limited, but sonography can provide addition information regarding the bone surface and surrounding soft tissue. Ultrasound is valuable for assessing joint disease. Joint effusion, thickening of the joint capsule and cartilage defects can be identified sonographically. It is also possible t…

Respiratory motor nerve activities during experimental seizures in cats.

We evaluated respiratory motor nerve activities during experimental seizures induced with subcortical penicillin. The activities of the phrenic (PH), nasolabial (NL), and hypoglossal (HG) nerves and the recurrent laryngeal motor branches to the thyroarytenoid (TA) and posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscles were analyzed in 13 anesthetized, vagotomized, paralyzed, and ventilated cats. During ictal and interictal phases of seizures, nerve activities became irregular and peak integrated nerve activities increased, particularly in the case of the PH nerve. The ictal phase of seizures was associate…

Spontaneous synchronized neural activity in decerebrate gallamine-paralysed cats.

In decerebrate cats paralysed with gallamine, over a period of several days there develops a remarkable synchronization of discharge in widely different motor nerves throughout the body, including intercostal nerves and limb nerves. These discharges are also in synchrony with slow waves approximately 100 ms in duration in the inferior olive. The slow waves and discharges are at first irregular and only weakly synchronized, but become increasingly strongly synchronized and by about the fourth day exhibit a strong 6-8 Hz rhythm. The degree of synchronization is greater the lower the end-tidal CO…

Sources of pancreatic pathogens in acute pancreatitis in cats.

The source(s) of pancreatic pathogens is uncertain, although the colon is usually implicated. We studied whether pathogens may spread from different sites in a feline model of the disease. Acute pancreatitis was induced using a standard technique and a distinctive clinical strain of Escherichia coli as the marker bacterium. E. coli were placed in the colon, gall bladder, main pancreatic duct, or obstructed renal pelvis of control cats (no pancreatitis) and acute pancreatitis cats. Pancreases were colonized from each source, whether or not pancreatitis was present. The pancreatic colonization r…

Red cell morphologic alterations in cats with hepatic disease.

Medical records from 39 cats with hepatic disease, examined at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, University of Florida, between 1987 and 1992 were retrospectively evaluated for alterations in red blood cell (RBC) morphology. Diagnoses included: hepatic lipidosis, neoplasia, cholangiohepatitis, hepatitis/hepatopathy, systemic histoplasmosis, and portocaval shunt. A total of 56 laboratory data sets were studied which included complete blood counts and serum chemistry results. Stained blood smears were evaluated from 51 of the data sets. Twenty-two cats (56%) were determined to have poiki…

Auditory brainstem responses in cats with Chediak-Higashi syndrome.

Auditory brainstem responses ABRs were recorded in cats with Chediak-Higashi syndrome using monaural stimulation. The components appearing between 1 and 3 ms after stimulus onset were greatly attenuated in the ABRs recorded using a reference contralateral to the stimulated ear. These data suggest that abnormalities exist in the brainstem auditory pathway in the region of the superior olivary complex in cats with Chediak-Higashi syndrome.

Endocardial fibroelastosis in common domestic cats in the UK.

Endocardial fibroelastosis (EFE) is a pathological disorder characterized by a diffuse and elastic thickening of the endocardium. It is often thought to be congenital as most victims are infants who die of congestive heart failure before reaching one year of age. A naturally occurring animal model of EFE was proposed more than a decade ago on the basis of one pair of adult pure-bred Burmese cats which produced offspring consistently affected with EFE. In the present study a case of EFE is described which occurred in a closed colony of experimental SPF cats. A 5-week-old kitten which was found …

Acute arthritis of cats associated with feline calicivirus infection.

Twelve specific pathogen-free cats were infected either by intra-articular inoculation or by contact exposure to one of two strains of feline calicivirus (FCV), either F65, a field strain originating from an outbreak of lameness in a group of cats, or a vaccine strain. Following either route of exposure, both strains induced signs typical of FCV infection including oral and nasal ulceration, conjunctivitis and ocular discharge. These signs were of equal severity for both virus strains, but overall, following either route of infection, F65 induced more severe disease than the vaccine strain, wi…

[Microbiological results of ear swabs from dogs and cats].

413 swabs of dogs and cats ears were examined microbiologically. Bacteria could be isolated in 82% and yeasts or moulds in 28% of the cases. The most common bacteria species were coagulase-positive Staphylococci, Pseudomonas spp., beta-hemolytic streptococci, and Proteus spp. with Staphylococci being the most common isolate. Within the group of yeasts and moulds Malassezia pachydermatis was isolated most frequently (90%). From the results of in vitro antibiotic tests, a general recommendation for the treatment of otitis externa nonparasitaria could not be given.
