Osteoid osteoma of a cervical vertebral body.

An osteoid osteoma in the anterior part of the body of the fourth cervical vertebra occurred in a 22-year-old female. The patient's main complaint was neck pain and occasional numbness of the extremities. The pain was relieved by analgesics. Plain radiography and a 99Tcm MDP bone scan showed a non-specific abnormality. CT suggested the pathological diagnosis with reasonable certainty. The unusual location of the lesion and the role of various diagnostic modalities are discussed and the literature reviewed.

A histochemical study on the differentiating vertebral column of chick.

1. The differentiation of the vertebral elements of the cervical region of the chick has been studied from 4 to 23 day age group counted from the day of the commencement of incubation. 2. From the histochemical tests it appears that chondrogenesis does not take place simultaneously in all the areas of the vertebra. 3. Histochemical changes usually follow histological differentiation. 4. The findings have been discussed in the light of inducing principles by the spinal cord.

Rare case of survival after traumatic disruption of the cervical spine with combined complete spinal cord injury and bilateral vertebral arterial breakdown in an 18-month-old patient.

Complete cervical disruption is a rare and lethal injury secondary to high-energy trauma. Bilateral vertebral arterial breakdown is also a rare and lethal injury. This is the first reported clinical case of an 18-month-old girl who survived after combined cervical spinal cord disruption and bilateral vertebral arterial breakdown. Although she developed cardiopulmonary arrest at the accident site, resuscitation by a bystander, early fluid resuscitation, appropriate respiratory management, and subsequent surgical stabilization resulted in survival and preservation of higher cortical functions. Traumatic invagination of the fourth and fifth cervical laminae with acute hemiparesis.

We describe a patient with traumatic right-sided invagination of two consecutive laminae into the spinal canal. The injury resembled a greenstick fracture and resulted in an acute Brown-Sequard syndrome. There was also an undisplaced hangman's fracture of the axis vertebra. These injuries were caused by an acute hyperextension and axial compression of the cervical spine. Open reduction and internal fixation of the laminar fractures without fusion was followed by full neurological recovery within six weeks.

[Symptomatic Langerhans-cell-histiocytosis of the cervical spine in a child: case report].

We report on a six year old female presented with a painful torticollis and a hemidysaesthesia caused by destruction of the third cervical vertebra and a paravertebral soft-tissue mass. At diagnostic routine finally a biopsy gives the diagnosis of Langerhans cell histiocytosis. In a second open approach the destructed vertebral body was replaced by a precisely adjusted autologous bone interponate and the patient was maintained in halo vest immobilisation. The outcome is described and an overview of the current literature is given.

Effect of a Traction Exercise Neck Brace on Cervical Spondylopathy Radiculopathy: A Clinical Study and Finite Element Analysis.

Traction of cervical spine is an effective method for the treatment of cervical spondylotic radiculopathy (CSR). In this study, a cervical tractor named traction exercise neck brace (TENB) was used to evaluate its effect on the patients with CSR. Forty CSR volunteers were recruited and randomly divided into two groups. One group was subjected to cervical muscle exercise with TENB under static traction condition. Another group was subjected to (JOBT) as controls. Symptoms of CSR were evaluated by the visual analogue scale (VAS) and neck disability index (NDI). Imaging characteristics were asses

Subsidence resulting from simulated postoperative neck movements: an in vitro investigation with a new cervical fusion cage.

STUDY DESIGN: A biomechanical in vitro subsidence test of different cervical interbody fusion devices was performed using a new testing protocol that simulates physiologic conditions. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of simulated postoperative neck movements on the subsidence of the new WING cervical interbody fusion cage in comparison with two other cages and bone cement. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Cervical interbody fusion cages sometimes cause complications because of subsidence into the adjacent vertebrae with collapse of the intervertebral space. Complications such as cage disloca

Surgical Treatment for Cervical Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis as a Cause of Dysphagia.

INTRODUCTION: The majority of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) involving the anterior margin of the cervical vertebrae is asymptomatic, but it can cause dysphagia. Improvements in swallowing after surgical treatment have been reported in several case series. However, the appropriate amount of osteophyte resection for this disease in terms of the pathophysiology of dysphagia is still unknown. The current report describes the appropriate surgical procedure for dysphagia secondary to anterior cervical hyperostosis, and discusses the etiology of dysphagia. METHODS: This is a retros…

The Course of the V2 Segment of the Vertebral Arteries in Klippel-Feil Syndrome: A Case Report.

Klippel-Feil syndrome is a congenital disorder characterized by the fusion of one or more cervical vertebrae leading to limitations in the rotation, extension, and flexion of the neck and possible neurological symptoms. Other abnormalities can also be found in these patients. The anatomy of the vasculature can be abnormal in these patients including variations in the course and origin of the vertebral arteries potentially leading to intra-operative complications. Herein, we report a case of Klippel-Feil syndrome and detail the course of the vertebral arteries in an osteological specimen.

Rare variation of the right internal jugular vein: a case study.

This study reports on a rare variation of the right internal jugular vein (IJV) identified during routine anatomic dissection of a male cadaver. The right IJV had a tributary located parallel and medially to the IJV itself. This branch of the IJV emerged between the transverse processes of the 3rd and 4th cervical vertebrae and drained into the junction between the right internal jugular and brachiocephalic veins. The present study described a rare branch of the right IJV, which is important knowledge for surgeons, in order to prevent accidental injury and bleeding during surgical procedures.

Ankylosing Spondylitis and Balance.

Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that mainly affects axial joints and the changes in the vertebrae cause typical kyphotic posture. In patients with ankylosing spondylitis, the postural changes, including cervical flexion, decreased lumbar lordosis, posterior rotation of pelvis, hip extension, knee flexion, and plantar flexion of ankle along with kyphosis, may occur in the upcoming terms of the disease and may negatively affect balance. Joint and eye involvements; muscular, vestibular and proprioceptional changes can also affect balance. This review evaluates the ankylos

Klippel-Feil syndrome associated with malformed larynx. Case report.

We report a case of a 45-year-old man with Klippel-Feil syndrome with fusion of the C2-3 and C4-5 cervical vertebrae and severe voice impairment associated with malformation of the laryngeal cartilages. The condition was also complicated by bilateral inflexibility of the arms and legs and external malformation of the ears. This case broadens the spectrum of anomalies, of branchial arch derivation, now identified in association with Klippel-Feil syndrome. We discuss the possibility that perturbation of segmentation, distinct from somitogenesis, may be linked to Klippel-Feil syndrome-associated …

Cervical Myelopathy: Diagnosis, Contemporary Treatment, and Outcomes.

Cervical myelopathy is a clinical syndrome caused by compression of the spinal cord between the levels of the C1 and T1 vertebrae. Its clinical presentation can mimic other degenerative and neurological pathologies, making diagnosis challenging. Diagnosis is confirmed with appropriate imaging studies carefully correlated with history and physical examination. Treatment options are focused on decompression of the spinal canal from an anterior, posterior, or combined anterior and posterior surgical approach depending on the location of compression and patient factors. Outcomes are favorable if t

Sprengel deformity and Klippel-Feil syndrome leading to cervical myelopathy presentation in old age.

Klippel-Feil syndrome is a rare condition characterized by the congenital fusion of two of the seventh cervical vertebrae. A 50-year-old woman presented with a 2-year history of neck pain and ataxia for 1 year. She had not urinary incontinence. She was referred to a neurosurgeon by a neurologist because of her progressive gait ataxia. Risk for brachial plexus injury because of compression or stretching by the clavicle accelerate with age. Therefore, the surgical approach of adults' patients with Sprengel's deformity can intend suitable surgical conclusions.
