Effect of nursing assistance tools on preventing musculoskeletal pain among staff in schools for disabled children.

Objective is to clarify whether nursing assistance tools (a mat with attached handles, a pair of trousers with knee pads and a waist holding belt) prevent musculoskeletal pain, such as low back pain and upper arm pain, and depression, and improve the burden on the lower back and upper arm among staff in schools for disabled children. This study design was a non-randomized intervention trial. The subjects were 41 staff in two schools for disabled children in Japan. Nursing assistance tools were used with the intervention group to help with their nursing activities. We investigated the one-month

Psychological functioning of children and adolescents with juvenile idiopathic arthritis is related to physical disability but not to disease status.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the psychological functioning of children with polyarticular joint disease and its association with disease activity and disability. METHODS: Sixty children aged 7-18 yrs with juvenile idiopathic arthritis and >4 joints involved were recruited. Children underwent a physical examination. The Childhood HAQ was completed by both the children and their parents. Children also completed questionnaires for depression (Birleson Depression Inventory; BDI), anxiety (Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale; RCMAS) and peer, emotional and behavioural problems (Streng

Lateral and central presentation of words with limited exposure duration as remedial training for reading disabled children.

In two studies it is examined whether lateral presentation of words in remedial practice for reading disabled children has additional effects to central presentation. The effect of limited exposure duration (LED) is also studied as a possible factor in inducing higher level decoding processes or increased processing speed of words. Two groups of Dutch reading disabled children (n1 = 25, mean age = 9;8 years and n2 = 36, mean age = 7;1 years) repeatedly practiced reading words presented in the left, right or the central visual field. The results show that all children improved substantially bot

Auditory temporal processing in children with specific reading disability with and without attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

The auditory temporal deficit hypothesis predicts that children with specific reading disability (RD) will exhibit a deficit in the perception of auditory temporal cues in nonspeech stimuli. Tasks assessing perception of auditory temporal and nontemporal cues were administered to children with (a) RD without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (RD/no-ADHD, n = 40), (b) ADHD alone (ADHD/no-RD, n = 33), (c) RD and ADHD (RD/ADHD, n = 36), and (d) no impairment (NI, n = 41). The presence of RD was associated with a specific deficit in detection of a tone onset time asynchrony, but no reductio

Perception of speech and nonspeech stimuli by children with and without reading disability and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The auditory temporal deficit hypothesis predicts that children with reading disability (RD) will exhibit deficits in the perception of speech and nonspeech acoustic stimuli in discrimination and temporal ordering tasks when the interstimulus interval (ISI) is short. Initial studies testing this hypothesis did not account for the potential presence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Temporal order judgment and discrimination tasks were administered to children with (1) RD/no-ADHD (n=38), (2) ADHD (n=29), (3) RD and ADHD (RD/ADHD; n=32), and (4) no impairment (NI; n=43). Contra

The development of spelling procedures in French-speaking, normal and reading-disabled children: effects of frequency and lexicality.

The spelling procedures of normal and reading-disabled French-speaking children matched for reading level were examined. Subjects had to spell frequent and infrequent words containing either inconsistent nondominant graphonemes (e.g., /s/ spelled "c" as in "cigarette," the dominant spelling for /s/ being "s") or consistent context-dependent graphonemes (e.g., /g/ followed by "i"-->"gu") as well as pseudo-words including inconsistent graphonemes presented in different phonological contexts (e.g., /s/ can be spelled "s" or "c" if the following vowel is /i/, but "c" is incorrect if the following

Right hemispheric dysfunction in nonverbal learning disabilities: social, academic, and adaptive functioning in adults and children.

This review addresses recent research on social and nonverbal learning disabilities. Involvement of right hemispheric dysfunction in these disabilities has been hypothesized, as studies with adults have suggested that documented right hemisphere damage may lead to deficits in social skills, prosody, spatial orientation, problem solving, and recognition of nonverbal cues. Studies of children purported to evidence nonverbal learning disabilities are reviewed and compared with the results from studies of adults with right hemisphere damage. Specific subtypes of nonverbal learning disabilities are

Design, Implementation and Evaluation of an Innovative Pilot Intervention to Improve the Family Quality of Life of Children with Specific Learning Disabilities-A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: The high prevalence of learning disabilities among children confirm that learning disabilities are surprisingly common. In the absence of routine screening, many children still go undetected with a huge individual and family burden, while at the same time, the findings of existing interventions are conflicting. This study reports on the design, implementation and evaluation of an innovative pilot intervention aiming at improving the quality of life of the family of children with specific learning disabilities. Method: For the purposes of this study, we ran a randomized controlled t

Mapping staff perspectives towards the delivery of hospital care for children and young people with and without learning disabilities in England: a mixed methods national study.

BACKGROUND: Children and young people (CYP) with learning disabilities (LD) are a vulnerable population with increased risk of abuse and accidental injury and whose parents have reported concerns about the quality, safety and accessibility of their hospital care. The Care Quality Commission's (CQC) view of best practice for this group of patients includes: access to senior LD nurse provision; a clearly visible flagging system for identifying them; the use of hospital passports; and defined communication strategies (Glasper, Comp Child Adolesc Nurs 40:63-67, 2017). What remains unclear is wheth

Growing stronger: Nine decades of physical disability representation in children's media and implications for pediatric rehabilitation.

BackgroundChildren's media both reflects and shapes societal attitudes toward physical disability. Despite its potential impact on self-concept and stigma, longitudinal, data-driven analysis of these portrayals remains scarce. This study aimed to quantify longitudinal trends in the tone and framing of physical disability representation in children's media and to explore implications for pediatric rehabilitation.MethodsA quantitative content analysis was conducted on 68 children's media productions (1933-2025) sourced from the Vanderbilt Peabody database. Content was filtered to age-appropriate

A review of the measurement properties of disability measures used in children and adolescents with musculoskeletal pain: a clinimetric review.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal pain is common in children and adolescents and is associated with disability. Although multiple Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) are used to assess disability, no previous review has evaluated both risk of bias and certainty of the evidence. This study aimed to appraise and summarise the evidence on PROMs for disability in children with musculoskeletal pain. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review following the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments (COSMIN). We included studies of measurement properties of d

Allergy-Aware Protocol for Blenderized Tube Feeding Initiation in Children With Severe Motor and Intellectual Disability.

BACKGROUND: Blenderized tube feeding (BTF) provides nutritional and psychosocial benefits for children requiring long-term enteral nutrition. However, BTF has been reportedly associated with food allergies, including anaphylaxis. Standardized protocols that consider food allergies in BTF initiation are currently unavailable for children with severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID). Thus, this study aimed to develop a structured, allergy-aware BTF initiation protocol tailored for patients with SMID receiving exclusive enteral nutrition. METHODS: This research included eight children

Germline functional variants contribute to neurodevelopmental trajectories in children with autism spectrum disorder or intellectual disability.

While genetic studies have identified risk variants for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual disability (ID), their role in informing neurodevelopmental outcomes remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association between functional germline variants (FGVs) and neurodevelopmental trajectories in children with ASD or ID. The study cohort comprised 484 children (448 with ASD or ID and 36 controls) recruited at Asan Medical Center between 2018 and 2023. Diagnoses and clinical variables were assessed at baseline and the index age (60-72 months). Whole exome sequencing was c

Sleep Spindle Abnormalities in Preschool Children With Autism Spectrum Disability: Insights From Nap Polysomnography.

Sigma power and sleep spindles are key elements of Non-Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) sleep. They reflect anatomical and physiological properties of brain circuits, are linked with various behavioral outcomes in typically development (TD) children, and undergo significant modifications during development. Furthermore, recent studies have highlighted the potential of NREM sigma power and sleep spindles as early neurophysiological markers for autism spectrum disability (ASD). Here, we conducted polysomnography (PSG)/EEG recordings during afternoon naps on 50 children aged between 2 and 6 years, diagn
