REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Polo, one of the world's oldest sports, is unique in merging human skill and balance with animal agility and performance in a contact sport. These modern-day 'centaurs' offer medical, dental and veterinary scientists an unrivalled, if quirky, opportunity to collaborate. Collection of epidemiological data on injuries to UK polo riders and ponies is the first step.
OBJECTIVES: To measure the reported risk and risk factors for injuries to UK polo ponies, their perception and mitigation by player-owners.

Post-injury inflammation can induce abnormal sensory perception and negative emotions. Previous studies have focused on peripheral and spinal prostaglandins (PGs) in response to chronic pain. Substantially, less is known about the role of PGs in the cortex. Here, we found that lipocalin-type prostaglandin D (PGD2) synthase was upregulated in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) of mice after peripheral inflammation. At the synaptic level, excitatory glutamatergic transmission was selectively enhanced in both the thalamic- and the insular-ACC pathways. These enhanced responses were reversed by b

Extreme weather events and air pollution are becoming increasingly frequent and severe, posing complex challenges to human health. Although the adverse effects of these environmental stressors on cardiovascular disease are widely acknowledged, the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This review examines these mechanisms from a physiological perspective, considering both pathways that act directly on the heart and those mediated through non-cardiac organs. Airborne particulate pollutants from dust storms, wildfires, and haze days can pass through the respiratory system and rea

This study aimed to elucidate the effects of storage temperature on various fruit quality attributes, physiological disorders, and associated metabolites in the 0.5, 3, or 10 °C stored hardy kiwifruit. Peel pitting, which was highest in the 0.5 °C stored fruit, was identified as a chilling injury symptom of hardy kiwifruit. Proline and branched-chain amino acid contents showed higher values at 0.5 °C stored fruit as chilling responses. On the other hand, fruit shriveling and decay were highest in the 10 °C after 5 weeks of storage. The 10 °C storage induced fruit ripening during 3 weeks, but f

Sinomenine is an alkaloid originally isolated from the root of the plant Sinomenium acutum. It is used in traditional medicine in China to treat rheumatic arthritis. In the present study, we evaluated the potential antinociceptive effects of sinomenine in rodents with nociceptive, inflammatory and neuropathic pain. In normal rats and mice, systemic sinomenine produced moderate antinociceptive effect in the hot plate and tail flick tests. Sinomenine also exerted analgesic effects on mechanical and heat hypersensitivity in mice after carrageenan induced inflammation. Finally, sinomenine effectiv

We report a successful repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) in a renal transplant recipient using a femoral V-A bypass to protect the renal allograft during aortic cross-clamping. A 49-year-old male patient with renal failure had received a second allogenic renal transplantation in the right iliac fossa in 2002. Four years later, computed tomography showed an enlargement of the AAA extending to the distal aorta with involvement of the common iliac arteries. He received resection and graft replacement of the AAA through a midline laparotomy using a femoral V-A bypass without cold perfus

Like nearly all biologic structures, the peripheral nervous system is remarkably temperature sensitive. Clinical neurophysiologists are most aware of the untoward effects of cooling on nerve conduction studies, including reduced conduction velocity, prolonged distal latency, and increased response amplitude and duration. However, familiarity with the effects of temperature variation on the peripheral nervous system can also provide a deeper understanding of the physiological mechanisms underlying the function of nerve, muscle, and neuromuscular junction in health and disease. PURPOSE: Previous reports established that after a contusion injury to the rat spinal cord, locomotor function was enhanced by the transplantation of cells from bone marrow referred to as either mesenchymal stem cells or multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). It has also been established that neural stem cells (NSCs) enhance locomotor function after transplantation into the injured rat spinal cord. However, the beneficial effects of NSCs are limited by graft-induced allodynia-like responses. Little is known about the effects of MSCs on sensory function in spinal cord injury. Therefore,

Background: Frostbite injury is a thermal injury where ice crystals form in skin tissues and subsequently lead to damage due to prolonged exposure to cold temperatures below 0 °C. The extremities are mostly affected, leading to potential amputation. As there is no pharmacological treatment of frostbite injury, we recently reported that non-clinically viable hydrogen sulfide (H2S) donors promote frostbite wound healing in mice. In this study, we investigated whether commonly used cosmetic creams supplemented with sodium thiosulfate (STS), a clinically viable H2S donor drug, also promote healing

Hemorrhagic shock (HS) is accompanied by a pronounced activation of the inflammatory response in which acute lung injury (ALI) is one of the most frequent consequences. Among the pivotal orchestrators of this inflammatory cascade, extracellular cold-inducible RNA-binding protein (eCIRP) emerges as a noteworthy focal point, rendering it as a promising target for the management of inflammation and tissue injury. Recently, we have reported that oligonucleotide poly(A) mRNA mimic termed A 12 selectively binds to the RNA binding region of eCIRP and inhibits eCIRP binding to its receptor TLR4. Furth

Delayed graft function (DGF) is commonly defined as dialysis needed within one week post-transplant. DGF is a common early post-transplant complication associated with detrimental outcomes. To overcome the shortage of donors, the criteria for selecting deceased donors have been liberalized. Increased associated risks with DGF-associated transplants, including donors with acute kidney injury, older age donors, prolonged cold ischemia time, and out-of-sequence kidneys, have become increasingly prevalent. There is currently no Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved DGF-related therapy. Previ

With the rising incidence of chronic liver disease and a persistent imbalance between organ supply and demand, expanded criteria donors (ECD) are gaining recognition. High-risk donor livers, meeting ultra-long criteria, are increasingly utilized to bridge the gap between organ demand and supply. For these high-risk livers, dynamic preservation through machine perfusion can mitigate post-transplant complications by enhancing graft quality and enabling viability testing prior to transplantation. Ex situ machine perfusion has overcome the limitations of traditional static cold preservation, trans

This study investigates the challenges and potential solutions for cryopreserving sea urchin (Paracentrotus lividus) eggs. It focuses on understanding the thresholds and osmoregulatory mechanisms, cryoprotectant toxicity, and cold tolerance in these eggs, which are especially difficult to preserve due to high sensitivity to cryoprotectants and low-temperature injury. Key findings suggest that stepwise addition of cryoprotectants, particularly dimethyl sulfoxide (Me2SO) combined with other agents like DMF or methanol, reduces toxicity and enhances larval survival. The study also highlights that

The serological responses to both SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2 virus have some unique characteristics that suggest cross-reactive priming by other human coronaviruses (hCoVs). The early kinetics and magnitude of these responses are, in some cases, associated with worse clinical outcomes in SARS and COVID-19. Cross-reactive hCoV antibody responses have been detected in both SARS and COVID-19 patients. There is also evidence that pre-existing T cell immunity to common cold coronaviruses can prime the response to SARS-CoV-2. Studies in non-human primates show that SARS-CoV-1 S-protein vaccine-induce

Acute and chronic pain account for high costs both societally and economically, estimated in the United States to be $635 billion. Untreated or undertreated acute pain is associated with substantial morbidity and may become chronic pain. Surgical patients are at an increased risk of long-term opioid use or addiction. Overdose from drugs of abuse, including opioids, is the leading cause of death due to injury in the United States. Traditional pain management strategies for acute and chronic pain have focused on opioid medications, which are often associated with severe side effects. Cryoneuroly

The analgesic effects of dexamethasone on neuropathic pain have been controversial. The present study investigated the effects of dexamethasone on mechanical allodynia in rats with mal-positioned dental implants. Under anesthesia, the left mandibular second molar was extracted and replaced by a miniature dental implant to injure the inferior alveolar nerve. Nociceptive behavior was examined on each designated day after surgery. Mal-positioned dental implants significantly decreased air-puff thresholds both ipsilateral and contralateral to the injury site. Distinct mechanical hyperalgesia and c

A 25-year-old woman who had delivered a normal child after a normal pregnancy four months ago, was suffering from a common cold. The latter was treated by tetracyclines. A few days later she developed an acute severe hemolysis. Moreover she had signs of hepatic failure which was characterized by a considerably reduced synthetic capacity of the liver but low serum aminotransferase levels and a proximal renal tubular disorder. With a negative Coombs test an autoimmune hemolytic anemia was unlikely. Therefore diagnostic procedures were directed at the cause of the liver injury. An increased urina
