BACKGROUND: Robotically assisted colon resection is a new type of surgery for colon cancer. However, the evidence is inadequate for the general adaptation of robotic colon surgery. This study aimed to show the oncologic and perioperative clinical results of robotically assisted anterior resection (R-AR) compared with those of laparoscopically assisted anterior resection (L-AR) for sigmoid colon cancer.

Recurrent urogynecologic complications in women with bladder exstrophy are common and complex given the congenital abnormalities of the bony, connective tissue, and muscular support of the pelvic floor, as well as the length and axis of the vagina. Management of these issues is challenging and often requires unique surgical strategies. We present the case of a distinct, individualized surgical approach to management of several complicated urogynecologic issues in a woman with bladder exstrophy who desired surgical correction of a non-healing fistula, pelvic organ prolapse, and a short vagina.

Intestinal volvulus in patients with inflammatory bowel disease is rare. A 83-year-old woman diagnosed with ulcerative colitis five years ago was referred to our hospital due to abdominal distension. We report a case of colonic perforation in CT colonography, which was observed in a sigmoid colon segment contained within an inguinal hernia. At surgery, apart from the perforation, a normal large-bowel wall was found. Although rare, perforation may occur in patients with normal bowel wall, possibly resulting from a mechanical strain caused by gaseous overdistention. Radiologists performing the procedure must be aware of this possibility.

There is little information on the numerical distribution of lymphoid nodules (LN) in distal segments of the human large bowel. A novel approach was therefore developed to assess the number of LN in the sigmoid colon, the rectosigmoid segment, the rectum, and the anal canal in humans. A retrospective study evaluated 15 patients with pelvic recurrence of colorectal cancer in a previously irradiated region who received intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) as part of salvage therapy. Total prior external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) doses ranged from 45 to 79.2 Gy. Tumor resection was accomplished in 14 patients, with an exenteration performed in seven. IORT dose was 15-20 Gy.
