[Foreign body ingestions in mental disorders: What do we know and what should we do?].

Foreign body ingestion (FBI) in mental disorders is a common and often highly challenging healthcare problem. While international guidelines exist for the acute gastroenterological care of adults with FBI, the data available in the psychiatric context is very limited in terms of both quantity and quality. FBI occurs in almost all mental disorders, but is probably most common in patients with borderline personality disorder. Sharp and pointed objects, particularly large (>2.5 cm in diameter) or long (>6 cm) objects, as well as batteries, especially button cells, but also magnets, are associated

Analysis of the Genomics and Mouse Virulence of an Emergent Clone of Streptococcus dysgalactiae Subspecies equisimilis.

Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis is a bacterial pathogen that is increasingly recognized as a cause of severe human infections. Much less is known about the genomics and infection pathogenesis of S. dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis strains compared to the closely related bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes. To address these knowledge deficits, we sequenced to closure the genomes of seven S. dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis human isolates, including six that were emm type stG62647. Recently, for unknown reasons, strains of this emm type have emerged and caused an increasing number of se

Genetic Variants Associated With Hidradenitis Suppurativa.

IMPORTANCE: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a common and severely morbid chronic inflammatory skin disease that is reported to be highly heritable. However, the genetic understanding of HS is insufficient, and limited genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have been performed for HS, which have not identified significant risk loci. OBJECTIVE: To identify genetic variants associated with HS and to shed light on the underlying genes and genetic mechanisms. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This genetic association study recruited 753 patients with HS in the HS Program for Research and Care

Genetically determined serum urate levels and cardiovascular and other diseases in UK Biobank cohort: A phenome-wide mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: The role of urate in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) has been extensively investigated in observational studies; however, the extent of any causal effect remains unclear, making it difficult to evaluate its clinical relevance. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A phenome-wide association study (PheWAS) together with a Bayesian analysis of tree-structured phenotypic model (TreeWAS) was performed to examine disease outcomes related to genetically determined serum urate levels in 339,256 unrelated White British individuals (54% female) in the UK Biobank who were aged 40-69 years (mean age, 56.87;

Enhanced recovery in colorectal surgery: a multicentre study.

BACKGROUND: Major colorectal surgery usually requires a hospital stay of more than 12 days. Inadequate pain management, intestinal dysfunction and immobilisation are the main factors associated with delay in recovery. The present work assesses the short and medium term results achieved by an enhanced recovery program based on previously published protocols. METHODS: This prospective study, performed at 12 Spanish hospitals in 2008 and 2009, involved 300 patients. All patients underwent elective colorectal resection for cancer following an enhanced recovery program. The main elements of this p

Chiropractic services in the active duty military setting: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Bivalves comprise a large, highly diverse taxon of invertebrate species. Developmental studies of neurogenesis among species of Bivalvia are limited. Due to a lack of neurogenesis information, it is difficult to infer a ground pattern for Bivalvia. To provide more comprehensive morphogenetic data on bivalve molluscs and relationships among molluscan clades, we investigated neurogenesis in the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, from the appearance of the first sensory cells to the formation of the larval ganglionic nervous system by co-immunocytochemistry of the neuronal markers FMR

Similar Clinical Outcomes with Preoperative and Postoperative Start of Thromboprophylaxis in THA: A Register-based Study.

BACKGROUND: Elective THA is associated with a high risk of thromboembolic events. Although these events may be less common now than they were in the past, they can be serious, and most patients undergoing the procedure therefore still receive thromboprophylaxis. However, controversy remains regarding whether to begin thromboprophylaxis before THA or after to best balance the risks of clotting and bleeding. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We asked the following questions: (1) Is there a difference in bleeding events with pre- versus postoperative thromboprophylaxis? (2) Is there a difference in thromboemb

The use of smartphone-derived location data to evaluate participation following critical illness: A pilot observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Disability is common following critical illness, impacting the quality of life of survivors, and is difficult to measure. 'Participation' can be quantified as involvement in life outside of their home requiring movement from their home to other locations. Participation restriction is a key element of disability, and following critical illness, participation may be diminished. It may be possible to quantify this change using pre-existing smartphone data. OBJECTIVES: The feasibility of extracting location data from smartphones of survivors of intensive care unit (ICU) admission and

Phenotypic and Genotypic Characterization of Multidrug-Resistant Enterobacter hormaechei Carrying qnrS Gene Isolated from Chicken Feed in China.

Multidrug resistance (MDR) in Enterobacteriaceae including resistance to quinolones is rising worldwide. The plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) gene qnrS is prevalent in Enterobacteriaceae. However, the qnrS gene is rarely found in Enterobacter hormaechei (E. hormaechei). Here, we reported one multidrug resistant E. hormaechei strain M1 carrying the qnrS1 and blaTEM-1 genes. This study was to analyze the characteristics of MDR E. hormaechei strain M1. The E. hormaechei strain M1 was identified as Enterobacter cloacae complex by biochemical assay and 16S rRNA sequencing. The whole gen

Imaging of the Osteoporotic Spine - Quantitative Approaches in Diagnostics and for the Prediction of the Individual Fracture Risk.

Osteoporosis is a highly prevalent systemic skeletal disease that is characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural bone deterioration. It predisposes to fragility fractures that can occur at various sites of the skeleton, but vertebral fractures (VFs) have been shown to be particularly common. Prevention strategies and timely intervention depend on reliable diagnosis and prediction of the individual fracture risk, and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) has been the reference standard for decades. Yet, DXA has its inherent limitations, and other techniques have shown potential as vi

Data Harmonization Methods and Data Quality Assessment for Integrating Routinely Collected Data Across Multiple Sources: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Integrating routinely collected health data across heterogeneous systems is essential for improving patient care, disease surveillance, and programmatic decision-making. However, heterogeneity in data formats, coding systems, and semantic definitions create challenges affecting consistent data interpretation and reuse across systems. Despite its importance, harmonization methods and their relationship to data quality have not been systematically examined. This review analyzes harmonization approaches, reported data quality attributes, associated benefits, and relationships among th

MRI-guided personalized tDCS planning for target engagement of the swallowing motor cortex after stroke: a finite-element modeling study.

BACKGROUND: Poststroke dysphagia (PSD) is a common, debilitating consequence of stroke that affects up to 50% of patients and leads to multiple medical complications. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) therapeutic efficacy depends on the electrode montage and interindividual anatomical differences. The use of the standard C5/C6 placement based on 10-20 electroencephalography (EEG) coordinates to guide electrode placements may result in misalignment with the target position. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether computational modeling leads to improved electric field (EF) parameters co

Tension-band high-strength suture combined with absorbable screws with cortical penetration for treating Mayo type IIA olecranon fractures: finite element analysis, biomechanical testing, and clinical study.

OBJECTIVE: Tension-band wiring with Kirschner wires (TBW) is a common surgical technique for olecranon fractures (OFs), but has limitations like implant removal and soft tissue irritation. Tension-band high-strength suture with absorbable screw (TBSAS) technique can effectively solve these issues. This study aims to demonstrate the biomechanical stability and clinical efficacy of the TBSASC technique for treating OFs (Mayo IIA) (AO 21-B1.1). METHODS: Four finite element models for OFs (Mayo IIA) compared fixation constructs: TBW with cortical penetration (TBWC), TBW with intramedullary fixati

Integrate mechanistic evidence from new approach methodologies (NAMs) into a read-across assessment to characterise trends in shared mode of action.

Read-across approaches often remain inconclusive as they do not provide sufficient evidence on a common mode of action across the category members. This read-across case study on thirteen, structurally similar, branched aliphatic carboxylic acids investigates the concept of using human-based new approach methods, such as in vitro and in silico models, to demonstrate biological similarity. Five out of the thirteen analogues have preclinical in vivo studies. Three out of them induced lipid accumulation or hypertrophy in preclinical studies with repeated exposure, which leads to the read-across h

Machine Learning Analysis of Nutrient Associations with Peripheral Arterial Disease: Insights from NHANES 1999-2004.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a common manifestation of atherosclerosis, affecting over 200 million people worldwide. The incidence of PAD is increasing due to the aging population. Common risk factors include smoking, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia, but its exact pathogenesis remains unclear. Nutritional intake is associated with the onset and progression of PAD, although relevant studies remain limited. Some studies suggest that certain nutritional elements may influence the development of PAD. This study aims to explore the relationship between nutrition and PAD using machi

CALM1 polymorphism in degenerative cervical myelopathy of the Indian cohort.

BACKGROUND: Degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM)– often termed cervical spondylotic myelopathy– is the most common cause of spinal cord injury in adults, arising from age-related degenerative changes in the spine. Genetic susceptibility may modulate which individuals develop myelopathy under these mechanical stresses. Calmodulin-1 (CALM1) is a gene encoding calmodulin, a key calcium-binding protein involved in cartilage maintenance and neural signalling, and CALM1 variants have been implicated in degenerative joint disease. We hypothesized that a CALM1 polymorphism could influence DCM risk.

Headache Triggers as Surprise.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the hypothesis that surprising experiences of headache triggers are associated with daily headache activity. BACKGROUND: Little is known about the specific environmental or behavioral interactions that might trigger a headache attack in a prone individual. We propose that headache trigger exposures can be usefully characterized, not only by their mechanisms of action, but also on the degree of "surprise" they present to the individual. This hypothesis is based on elements of information theory: that unusual events and experiences carry more information than common event
