The aim of the paper is to demonstrate the role of protective vaccinations, including obligatory ones and the so called vaccinations in emergency, in control of infectious diseases in the years 1918-1923. The legal regulations of protective vaccinations the supply of vaccines and the organization and performance of obligatory vaccinations against smallpox, typhoid fever, paratyphus A and B, and Asiatic cholera made possible, together with other preventive measures, to restrict and eradicate foci of infections.

Since April 1990, CDC has graphically presented changes in reported cases of 14 notifiable infectious diseases reported through the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS). Figure I of each issue of MMWR displays on a log scale the ratio of the number of cases reported in the most recently ended 4-week period to that of the mean of the number of cases reported in 15 historical 4-week periods. During 1992-1993, Figure I has indicated a decline in incidence in selected reportable diseases (e.g., measles, mumps, and rubella). Declines in the incidence of these diseases could repr

Appearance of Legionella disease generally is underrated. Conclusions as to disease frequency from Legionella antibody investigations are not reliable. The number of microbes necessary to produce illness depends from individual preliminary conditions. In special areas of the hospital the rate of diseases caused by Legionella can be reduced by protection. In bathing areas generally the hitherto existing regulations of the Federal Health Authority are sufficient: Continual warm water temperature increases from 60 degrees C, chlorination if necessary, regular stepwise controls. Insufficient resul

Recent reports of fatal transfusion-associated Yersinia enterocolitica sepsis prompted a study of the feasibility of adding a question to the routine donor health history as a method of reducing this risk. In three American Red Cross blood centers, 11,323 donors were asked one of two questions about gastrointestinal symptoms during their health history screenings. Affirmative responses were obtained from 0.6 or 4.0 percent of the donors, depending on how the question was asked. In one center, more than 6 percent of donors gave affirmative answers. The efficacy of asking a relatively simple que

Outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases are becoming more common in the United States. Outbreaks of some diseases, such as measles, can be attributed to decreasing vaccination rates. Clinicians need to be aware of the vulnerabilities in their communities. Detection of an outbreak requires familiarity with signs, symptoms, and laboratory findings for these now unusual diseases. Clinicians also need to work with public health officials to identify, treat, and limit the spread of these infections. This article describes the populations most at risk from illnesses associated with sporadic outbre

Rabies is an ancient viral disease that significantly impacts human and animal health throughout the world. In the developing parts of the world, dog bites represent the highest risk of rabies infection to people, livestock, and other animals. However, in North America, where several rabies virus variants currently circulate in wildlife, human contact with the raccoon rabies variant leads to the highest per capita population administration of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) annually. Previous rabies variant elimination in raccoons (Canada), foxes (Europe), and dogs and coyotes (United States)

OBJECTIVE: To understand the epidemic situation of schistosomiasis in Jiujiang City, so as to provide the evidence for formulating further control strategy.
METHODS: The data of schistosomiasis control were collected in Jiujiang City from 2008 to 2014. and the indicators including the annual schistosome infections of human and cattle, acute schistosome infection, outbreak of schistosomiasis endemic, schistosome infected Oncomelania hupensis snails were analyzed statistically.
RESULTS: Compared with 2008, in 2014, the infection rates of schistosomiasis declined by 98.40% and 92.54% in human a

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of comprehensive measures with emphasis on schistosomiasis infectious source control at the embankment level.
METHODS: The comprehensive measures with emphasis on schistosomiasis infectious source control were carried out, and the data of human and Oncomelania snail infection rates were collected and analyzed statistically at embankment levels.
RESULTS: In Anbao Embankment, except the other comprehensive measures were performed, 2606 buffaloes were removed. The infection rates of residents reduced from 8.04% before the intervention to 0.7% after the interve

Human vaccinology, with its primary focus on the individual, seems far removed from veterinary medicine, with its concern for the health of the herd. Yet several episodes in the past (smallpox, fowl cholera, anthrax, swine erysipelas, rabies, tuberculosis, etc.) serve to illustrate the proximity between research on veterinary and human vaccines. In some cases the human vaccine was developed first, while in other cases it was the animal vaccine. The history of vaccinology clearly demonstrates the importance of these 'two medicines' working together. Foot and mouth disease (FMD) vaccines were am

Smallpox is the first viral infection to have been eradicated world-wide. This remarkable success is due to several factors including the availability of an efficacious vaccine and the absence of a wildlife reservoir. The only animal virus disease sharing these characteristics is rinderpest, for which there are several efficacious vaccines. Other animal viral infections do not share the same characteristics, either due to the lack of an efficacious vaccine (African swine fever), or to the existence of wildlife reservoirs such as the wild boar for classical swine fever, the African buffalo for

The data on the morbidity in infectious diseases in the Chechen Republic in recent years are presented. As revealed from these data, under the conditions of the crisis situation the tendency towards the deterioration of the epidemiological situation began to show from the beginning of the 1990s. The growth of morbidity in some infections was registered, the outbreaks of dangerous infections (cholera, poliomyelitis, diphtheria, typhoid fever) appeared. The armed conflicts led to the disintegration of the sphere of social services of the republic and were accompanied by the destruction of the sy

This study develops a behavior-disease feedback model grounded in imitation dynamics to analyze optimal long-term epidemic coexistence strategies from both static and dynamic perspectives. Analytical findings reveal that the stability of the system depends on both the basic reproduction number and the behavioral threshold, with the latter and risk attention jointly determining optimal static intervention intensity. Data-driven analyses of influenza (Shanxi) and COVID-19 (Shanghai) show that adaptive public behavior can drive recurrent epidemic waves. In dynamic optimization simulations involvi
