The need for an interdisciplinary approach in the comprehensive management of individuals with cleft lip and palate is well recognized. OBJECTIVE: Kidney transplantation with a living donor has proved to be an effective solution for kidney patients on the waiting list for transplantation. Nevertheless, it may be difficult to find a living kidney donor. The purpose of this explorative study is to investigate how kidney transplant candidates may, or may not, find a living donor in the Netherlands.

We experienced the ligation of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) via the left thoracotomy in a 24-day-old infant with inferior vena cava defect and hemiazygos communication to a persistent left superior vena cava (LSVC). Although the large hemiazygos vein (HAzV) crossed just in front of PDA, its mobilization enabled the smooth ligation of PDA without hemodynamic instability. The postoperative course was uneventful.

Congenital aortico-cameral communications are rarely seen. We present an asymptomatic patient in whom there was a congenital vascular communication rising from the aortic root and terminating in the left atrium. She had an atrial septal defect (ASD). The diagnosis was made with echocardiography and confirmed by aortography. She was treated by closing the tunnel and the ASD. The outcome was satisfactory in this extremely rare case of a congenital cardiac lesion. Coincidental diagnosis could be made during careful echocardiographic examination.

Cyclical hematuria is an unusual presentation of a müllerian fusion anomaly. We report a patient with transverse vaginal septum and menstruation by way of the lower urinary tract because of a vesical-vaginal communication. A defect of vertical fusion, transverse vaginal septum results from failure of canalization of the vaginal plate. Reconstruction using a transvaginal and transabdominal approach created a direct anastomosis between the proximal vaginal segment and the distal vaginal pouch. Previously described cases are reviewed.
