The number of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) patients is increasing rapidly. More attention has been paid to the relationship between immunity and MASLD. This study explored the roles of serum autoantibodies, immunoglobulins, and complements in MASLD. A total of 182 MASLD patients were investigated and grouped by autoantibody or NAS scores. Correlation between immunology and clinical features was assessed. In addition, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) models were constructed to verify the findings. Neutrophils were isolated from mice and

We describe a previously healthy 9-year-old girl who had multiple purpura several days after acute adenovirus gastroenteritis and mycoplasma pneumonia. Initial laboratory evaluation revealed a prolonged prothrombin time (PT) and APTT, low complement levels (C4, CH50), and positive immune complex (C1q) in her serum. Platelet count, fibrinogen, and other routine blood chemistry tests were normal. The prolonged APTT was not corrected by mixture of the patient's plus normal plasma. Clotting activities of factors II, V, VIII, IX, X, XI, and XII reduced. Further examinations revealed the presence of

Primary selective immunoglobulin (Ig) M deficiency usually presents early in life with recurrent or severe infections caused by encapsulated and gram-negative organisms. Primary selective IgM deficiency in adults is rare and is usually associated with autoimmune diseases or malignant neoplasm. We performed an extensive immunological analysis of innate and adaptive immunity in an adult patient with possible primary selective IgM deficiency who presented with life-threatening Streptococcus pneumoniae septic shock and invasive Aspergillus fumigatus infection. The patient had no evidence of autoim

We describe a 10 year old patient admitted to the Children's Hospital of Buffalo with hypocomplementemia associated with steroid responsive minimal change nephrotic syndrome. The sibling also had a low serum C3 concentration and all family members studied had C3 slow phenotypes. Factor I levels were at the lower limit of normal in the patient and his brother. Functional assays for CH50, total hemolytic C3 and serum concentration of C2, C4-C9 and factors B and H were all within normal limits. This case confirms that a depressed serum complement level can occur in minimal change nephrotic syndro

BACKGROUND: Asymptomatic degenerative cervical cord compression (ADCC) represents a premyelopathic stage of degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM), with high prevalence in older age and unclear management. Contact heat-evoked potentials (CHEPs) assess the integrity of the thermo-algesic somatosensory pathway and have shown the highest sensitivity among neurophysiological methods in detecting dysfunction in the centromedial and anterior spinal cord in DCM.
METHODS: This cross-sectional cohort study evaluated the utility of upper extremity dermatomal C4, C6 and C8 CHEPs (dCHEPs) compared to sta

A strong correlation between lupus nephritis (LN), disease activity, and serum beta 2-microglobulin (b2MG) was observed. The current study examines the correlation between serum b2MG and renal involvement, damage score, and disease activity in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. One hundred SLE patients from Ain Shams University Hospital were enrolled and categorized into two groups. Group I had 40 patients with negative b2MG, while Group II had 60 patients with positive b2MG levels. Medical history, clinical examination, and assessing disease activity based on SLE disease activity in

Autoantibodies against C1q have been described in many immune-complex diseases including hypocomplementaemic urticarial vasculitis and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). No study has focused on the role of anti-C1q antibodies in hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. The aim of this study was (i) to evaluate the prevalence of anti-C1q antibodies in HCV infection; and (ii) to analyse the association of anti-C1q antibodies with clinical and biological features of HCV-mixed cryoglobulinaemia (MC) vasculitis. We searched for anti-C1q antibodies using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test

We studied the immunocompetence of 18 children with conotruncal malformations (13 with tetralogy of Fallot, 5 with truncus arteriosus) and 22 children with cardiac shunt lesions. There were reduced total T cell percentages and T helper cells in the conotruncal group but no T cell abnormality in the shunt group. Also, 7 of the 18 cases in the conotruncal group had facial dysmorphism reminiscent of the Di George syndrome. These results suggest that patients with conotruncal malformations fall into the wide spectrum of the Di George syndrome. There was some humoral deficiency in both groups with

A 4-year-old boy developed nephrotic syndrome following varicella infection. Serologic studies during the early phase of the disease demonstrated a decrease in serum C3, C4, and properdin factor B. Renal biopsy revealed an acute proliferative glomerulonephritis with deposition of immunoglobulins A (IgA) and M, C3, C1q, and varicella virus antigen in the glomerulus, suggesting an immune complex deposition. Ultrastructurally, this suggested a postinfectious immune complex glomerulonephritis. These phenomena suggested that varicella virus antigen antibody complexes were deposited in the glomerulu

The author reports two cases of severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA) where the manifestations of necrosis vasculitis consisted of extensive and bullous gangrene of the lower limbs. In one case, the laboratory picture was that of major complement consumption (CH50 unmeasureable, marked fall in various compounds including C3 and C4) with very high levels of circulating immune complexes. An attempt at treatment by plasmapheresis, immunodepressants and corticosteroids led to moderate stabilisation of the vasculitis (regression of purpura) but remained incapable of resolving the local problem of gangre

Background Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease with a complex, varied clinical presentation that is both more common and has poor outcomes in women of color. SLE outcomes also seem to be influenced by socioeconomic factors. Neuropsychiatric lupus (NPL) is a common manifestation of SLE that is difficult to diagnose and treat and has poor clinical outcomes. There is no clear relationship between NPL and SLE-related autoantibodies, and this contributes to the difficulty in diagnosing NPL. As a result, NPL is a significant contributor to morbidity and mortality in pa

Hereditary angioedema is manifested by attacks of swelling of the extremities, face, trunk, airway, or abdominal viscera, occurring spontaneously or secondary to trauma. It is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait and is due to deficient activity of the inhibitor of the activated first component of complement. The clinical diagnosis can be confirmed by the findings of low levels of C4 or C1 esterase inhibitor activity, or both. Therapy may be divided into three phases: long-term prophylaxis of attacks, short-term prophylaxis of attacks, and treatment of acute attacks. Long-term prophylaxis

Background: Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is characterized by non-chronic (transient, <12 months) and chronic (≥12 months) decline in the number of platelets. Herpes virus infections have been shown, in many studies, to be associated with the development of ITP. However, it remains unclear whether the herpes virus infection status is associated with the chronic ITP. Methods: We reviewed 480 primary pediatric patients with ITP in the period from January 2017 to December 2019. The prevalence of herpes virus antibodies including the Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1), Herpes si
