A 41-year-old man was admitted for evaluation of hemoptysis, dysphagia, and pleuritic chest pain associated with a mediastinal mass. Esophagography demonstrated a fistula between the mass and the esophagus. Results of histoplasmosis complement fixation serologic testing suggested an active infection. A methenamine silver stain of a lymph node obtained at mediastinoscopy revealed Histoplasmosis capsulatum. The patient was successfully treated with amphotericin B. The Rose Bengal Plate Agglutination test (RBT), the complement fixation text (CFT) and the tube agglutination test (TAT) were applied to serums from 345 feral and 80 domestic pigs sampled at slaughter. Dibiomycin, biomycin, and biomycin in combination with erythromycin (antibiotics with a wide range of action) used once or in interrupted courses produced a distinct prophylactic effect in experimental rickettsia infection in guinea pigs. The most pronounced prophylactic action was observed when chemoprophylaxis was combined with immunization with inactivated typhud vaccine. Auto-antibodies against normal human liver have been detected in the sera of humans with highly positive indirect hemagglutination (IHA) amebiasis titers and with clinically-proven amebic liver abscess. The immunologic status of 25 patients with disseminated coccidiodomycosis was evaluated by serum anticoccidioidin complement-fixing antibody levels, coccidiodin skin tests, and dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) sensitization. Immunologic response to A and B erythrocytic antigen stimulation was studied in patients with pemphigus, in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and in normal subjects.
