Symptom presentation and outcome of cognitive-behavioral therapy for obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Previous researchers have classified obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients by the themes of their obsessions and compulsions (e.g., washing, checking); however, mental compulsions have not been adequately assessed in these studies. The authors conducted 2 studies using a large sample of OCD patients (N=132). In the 1st study, they categorized patients on the basis of symptom presentation, giving adequate consideration to mental compulsions. Five patient clusters were identified: harming, contamination, hoarding, unacceptable thoughts, and symmetry. Mental compulsions were most prevalent

Abnormal and normal compulsions.

Previous research by Rachman and de Silva (1978, Behaviour Research and Therapy, 16, 233-248) and by Salkovskis and Harrison (1984, Behaviour Research and Therapy, 22, 549-552) has shown that abnormal and normal obsessions are similar in content. The present study examined whether the same is true for abnormal and normal rituals. A sample of normal subjects (N = 150) were asked about their idiosyncratic rituals. A majority of them (54.7%) indicated that they had such rituals. While these rituals were less frequent, less intense, and less often associated with negative affect than the compulsio

Level of Insight in Patients With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: An Exploratory Comparative Study Between Patients With "Good Insight" and "Poor Insight".

Introduction: Insight may be defined as the ability to perceive and evaluate external reality and to separate it from its subjective aspects. It also refers to the ability to self-assess difficulties and personal qualities. Insight may be a predictor of success in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), so that individuals with poor insight tend to become refractory to treatment. The objective of this study is to investigate factors associated with poor insight in individuals with OCD. Methods: This cross-sectional exploratory study used the Brown Belief Assessment Scale as a par

[Clinical perfectionism and cognitive behavioral therapy].

The present study constitutes a brief literature overview, in which the term of clinical perfectionism, its etiopathology, its assessment and its relation to psychopathology, as well as the therapeutic interventions based on the Cognitive Behavioral Model are discussed. According to Frost, perfectionism is associated with one's desire to achieve the greatest degree of performance and it is accompanied by an extremely strict evaluation of that particular performance. The relationship with oneself as well as the relationship with others are both characterised by high standards and demands which

Bigorexia: bodybuilding and muscle dysmorphia.

Muscle dysmorphia is an emerging condition that primarily affects male bodybuilders. Such individuals obsess about being inadequately muscular. Compulsions include spending hours in the gym, squandering excessive amounts of money on ineffectual sports supplements, abnormal eating patterns or even substance abuse. In this essay, I illustrate the features of muscle dysmorphia by employing the first-person account of a male bodybuilder afflicted by this condition. I briefly outline the history of bodybuilding and examine whether the growth of this sport is linked to a growing concern with body im

Overactivity and boundary setting in anorexia nervosa: an existential perspective.

Excessive motor activity in anorexia nervosa has been variously described as a symptom of a wider perceptual disorder, as the cause of anorexia, and as a neurologically based compulsive behavior. It is also considered a secondary symptom used to burn calories. In this paper, this symptom is considered from an existential perspective. It is first shown that the anorexic's mode of being is overly rational and not irrational as claimed by cognitive-behaviorists. It is then hypothesized that overactivity may help the anorexic person achieve a sense of existential permanence by dynamizing her stati

Psychopathological Symptoms and Personality Traits as Predictors of Problematic Smartphone Use in Different Age Groups.

The study investigates psychopathological symptoms and the Big Five personality traits as predictors of "problematic smartphone use" (PSU) in different generational groups. The generational groups were selected to analyze whether the different life stages and developmental tasks that need to be completed have an impact on PSU. The groups were divided into digital immigrants, digital natives, and Generation Y and Z as subgroups of digital natives. A total of 399 subjects participated (312 women, 86 men, 1 diverse; mean age = 25.9; range 14-67; 44 digital immigrants, 355 digital natives, 35 Gene

A controlled family history study of Tourette's syndrome, II: Alcoholism, drug abuse, and obesity.

The behaviors associated with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (TS), including impulsive, compulsive, attentional, learning, conduct, and mood disorders, have often been described as substrates for the development of alcoholism and/or drug abuse. As the authors' experience with TS pedigrees indicated that alcoholism and/or drug abuse were common in relatives of TS probands, they examined, by the family history technique, 1750 relatives over 14 years of age in 130 TS proband and 25 control families. Significant, life-disrupting problems with alcoholism and/or drug abuse were present in 14.5% of

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms during pregnancy and postpartum: prevalence, stability, predictors, and comorbidity with peripartum depression symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy and postpartum are considered vulnerable periods for new parents to develop obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The aim of this study was threefold: (1) to establish the prevalence of OCD symptoms and its course in the peripartum period; (2) to examine comorbidity with depressive symptoms; and (3) to investigate which sociodemographic, obstetric, and individual characteristics are predictors of OCD symptoms. METHODS: A longitudinal study included 397 women during pregnancy (T1) and 6-12 weeks postpartum (T2). Participants filled out the obstetrical and demographic sheet

Do all obsessions contradict personal values to the same degree? A pilot investigation.

Although much is known about how intrusive thoughts become obsessions, the factors that determine which particular thoughts do so is not. The degree to which intrusions are personally significant may be such a determinant. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is heterogeneous; thus, it is possible that contradictions of personal values may play a varying role in the development of obsessions depending on which OCD symptoms manifest and may change differentially following treatment. Archival data were examined. Patients with a diagnosis of OCD (N = 62) reported their most upsetting obsession and

Are claims of non-inferiority of Internet and computer-based cognitive-behavioural therapy compared with in-person cognitive-behavioural therapy for adults with anxiety disorders supported by the evidence from head-to-head randomised controlled trials? A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: This review examines the evidence from head-to-head randomised controlled trials addressing whether the efficacy of cognitive-behavioural therapy for anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorders in adults delivered by computer or online (computer- and Internet-delivered cognitive-behavioural therapy) is not inferior to in-person cognitive-behavioural therapy for reducing levels of symptoms and producing clinically significant gains at post-treatment and at follow-up. A supplementary aim is to examine the evidence for severity as a moderator of

Integrating Exposure and Response Prevention With a Mobile App to Treat Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Feasibility, Acceptability, and Preliminary Effects.

Many individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) do not receive evidence-based care (specifically exposure and ritual prevention; EX/RP) due to barriers such as a lack of EX/RP-trained clinicians, geographic obstacles, and the cost and time associated with the treatment. Offering an integrated treatment model consisting of brief in-person therapy coupled with a mobile application (app) might be one way to increase access to and reduce the time burden (to clinicians and patients) of EX/RP. This pilot trial evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and clinical effects of such a treatme

Using lickometry to infer differential contributions of salience network regions during compulsion-like alcohol drinking.

Alcohol use disorder extracts substantial personal, social and clinical costs, and continued intake despite negative consequences (compulsion-like consumption) can contribute strongly. Here we discuss lickometry, a simple method where lick times are determined across a session, while analysis across many aspects of licking can offer important insights into underlying psychological and action strategies, including their brain mechanisms. We first describe studies implicating anterior insula (AIC) and dorsal medial prefrontal cortex (dMPF) in compulsion-like responding for alcohol, then review w
