Utilization of a thorax anthropomorphic phantom for dose assessment and scanning protocol synchronization in computed tomography.

Optimizing radiation dose while maintaining image quality remains a key challenge in computed tomography (CT). This study used a thorax-specific anthropomorphic phantom to assess patient dose, image quality, and artefact presence under automated tube current modulation settings and to evaluate the effect of tube voltage on Hounsfield Unit (HU) response for different iodine concentrations. Dose metrics, noise levels, and image quality indicators were extracted from Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) metadata and image analysis. The study examined how patient positioning affe

Nonmonotonic Enhancement of Signal Gain by Outer-Surface Charge in Nanopores: toward Precise Single-Entity Detection.

Nanopore technology is a powerful tool for studying the native structures and properties of single entities. However, it sometimes suffers from insufficient accuracy and a potential false positive rate due to low ionic current signal gain. Herein, we report a methodology whereby the manipulation of nanopore outer-surface (OS) charges enhances the ionic current signal gain, which, in turn, improves detection accuracy in single-entity analysis. The results demonstrate that OS charges enhance the ionic current change value (ΔI) and ionic current change rate (β), two key signals for nanopore singl

Synthesis of Highly Borylated 2‑Boraindanes through Multiple Borylation of Diynes.

Boraindanes, composed of aromatic two-dimensional (2D) benzene and saturated three-dimensional (3D) boracycle moieties, are considered promising candidates for bioactive compounds/probes, agents for boron neutron capture therapy, and functional materials, as they combine the photophysical properties of the 2D aromatic and the high molecular recognition ability of the 3D boracycle. However, 2-boraindanes are difficult to access due to the difficulty of constructing two unstable C-(sp3)-B bonds. Herein, we present a straightforward synthesis of highly borylated, phenanthrene-fused 2-boraindane d

SolvateIt: A Tool for Solvating Molecules. A Case Study of Phloroglucinol in Solution.

The explicit first solvation shell remains a pivotal challenge in quantum chemical studies of solution-phase systems. A surface coverage-based protocol to construct explicit solvation environment is presented, in which the number and arrangement of solvent molecules emerge from the percentage of Solvent Accessible Surface (SAS) surrounding the solute rather than being user-defined. This strategy is implemented in a computational tool to ensure reproducibility. Phloroglucinol (PG) in ethanol is analyzed to validate this approach, comparing in vacuum, implicit solvent, and explicit ethanol syste

HORNET: tools to find genes with causal evidence and their regulatory networks using eQTLs.

MOTIVATION: Nearly two decades of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identify thousands of disease-associated genetic variants, but very few genes with evidence of causality. Recent methodological advances demonstrate that Mendelian randomization (MR) using expression quantitative loci (eQTLs) as instrumental variables can detect potential causal genes. However, existing MR approaches are not well suited to handle the complexity of eQTL GWAS data structure and so they are subject to bias, inflation, and incorrect inference. RESULTS: We present a whole-genome regulatory network analys

Advances in Female Chest Modeling: Enhanced 3D Dosimetric Models Across Two Illustrative Scenarios.

Image-based virtual human models are crucial for accurately assessing electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure. However, conventional 3D female models often inadequately represent the chest area, particularly the natural shape of the breast, due to limitations in imaging posture. This study presents a novel methodological approach to generate anatomically realistic female models, addressing a critical gap in EMF exposure simulation of female chest. We developed an improved breast model with natural upright geometry and integrated it into an existing whole-body virtual human. This enhanced model wa

Probabilistic-graph-based spatial context-aware framework for interpretable spatial omics denoising and augmentation.

Spatially resolved omics technologies offer unprecedented insight into tissue organization, yet current analytical methods face challenges in effectively handling technical noise while preserving biological heterogeneity. We present CadaST, an interpretable and unified computational framework that integrates spatially aware feature selection and an adaptive imputation strategy to address this limitation. By inferring the spatial molecular pattern for each feature and conducting pattern-guided aggregation, CadaST effectively denoises and augments spatial omics data while preserving sharp biolog

A Hundred Ways to Encode Sound Signals for Cochlear Implants.

Cochlear implants are the most successful neural prostheses used to restore hearing in severe-to-profound hearing-impaired individuals. The field of cochlear implant coding investigates interdisciplinary approaches to translate acoustic signals into electrical pulses transmitted at the electrode-neuron interface, ranging from signal preprocessing algorithms, enhancement, and feature extraction methodologies to electric signal generation. In the last five decades, numerous coding strategies have been proposed clinically and experimentally. Initially developed to restore speech perception, incre

Assessment of the Association Constant of the CO2@CB[6] Complex Combining 1H and 13C NMR Spectroscopic Titrations.

A methodology for assessing the association constants of a molecular host binding a 13C-enriched gaseous guest, that is, 13CO2, using NMR spectroscopic titrations is described. The method relies on injecting the gaseous guest into the headspace of a gas-tight NMR tube filled with the host's solution. The fraction of the gas dissolved in the liquid solution is quantified via 13C NMR spectroscopy using the Electronic Reference To Access In Vivo Concentrations technique without requiring assumptions based on Henry's law. By subsequently recording the 1H NMR spectrum of the solution mixture, the r

Causal Multistate Models to Evaluate Treatment Delay.

Multistate models allow for the study of scenarios where individuals experience different events over time. While effective for descriptive and predictive purposes, multistate models are not typically used for causal inference. We propose an estimator that combines a multistate model with g-computation to estimate the causal effect of treatment delay strategies. In particular, we estimate the impact of strategies such as awaiting natural recovery for 3 months, on the marginal probability of recovery. We use an illness-death model, where illness and death represent, respectively, treatment and

Decoding eQTLs: unraveling their role in spondyloarthropathies pathogenesis and potential therapeutics.

Expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) represent genetic variants that influence gene expression, providing insights into the mechanisms linking genetic predisposition to complex diseases, including spondyloarthropathies (SpAs). SpAs, encompassing ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, reactive arthritis, and enteropathic arthritis, are related heterogeneous conditions with strong genetic components, particularly in HLA-B27 and non-HLA loci, but phenotypically distinct disorders. Recent advances in genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and transcriptomic studies have shown the poten

Pulmonary MRI in Newborns and Children.

Lung MRI is an important tool in the assessment and monitoring of pediatric and neonatal lung disorders. MRI can provide both similar and complementary image contrast to computed tomography for imaging the lung macrostructure, and beyond this, a number of techniques have been developed for imaging the key functions of the lungs, namely ventilation, perfusion, and gas exchange, through the use of free-breathing proton and hyperpolarized gas MRI. Here, we review the state-of-the-art in MRI methods that have found utility in pediatric and neonatal lung imaging, the structural and physiological in

Multimodal Imaging of Coronary Bifurcation TAP Procedures Utilizing Visible Heart® Methodologies: EBC Recommended Steps and Bailout Procedures.

In some cases it is critical to clinically perform coronary bifurcation stenting to minimize the potential risk for restenosis and/or stent thrombosis. The European Bifurcation Club (EBC) has provided guidelines for optimally performing such procedures. Yet, sometimes such procedures do not go as planned, and in some cases bailout procedures are required. Here we utilized Visible Heart® (VH) methodologies and multimodal visualizations to better understand each step for optimally performed T and small protrusion (TAP) procedures, as well as those in which complications occurred. These studies w

Asymmetric Synthesis of Nidulalin A and Nidulaxanthone A: Selective Carbonyl Desaturation Using an Oxoammonium Salt.

Nidulaxanthone A is a dimeric, dihydroxanthone natural product that was isolated in 2020 from Aspergillus sp. Structurally, the compound features an unprecedented heptacyclic 6/6/6/6/6/6/6 ring system which is unusual for natural xanthone dimers. Biosynthetically, nidulaxanthone A originates from the monomer nidulalin A via stereoselective Diels-Alder dimerization. To expedite the synthesis of nidulalin A and study the proposed dimerization, we developed methodology involving the use of allyl triflate for chromone ester activation, followed by vinylogous addition, to rapidly forge the nidulali

Hyperbolic matrix factorization improves prediction of drug-target associations.

Past research in computational systems biology has focused more on the development and applications of advanced statistical and numerical optimization techniques and much less on understanding the geometry of the biological space. By representing biological entities as points in a low dimensional Euclidean space, state-of-the-art methods for drug-target interaction (DTI) prediction implicitly assume the flat geometry of the biological space. In contrast, recent theoretical studies suggest that biological systems exhibit tree-like topology with a high degree of clustering. As a consequence, emb

Lung_PAYNet: a pyramidal attention based deep learning network for lung nodule segmentation.

Accurate and reliable lung nodule segmentation in computed tomography (CT) images is required for early diagnosis of lung cancer. Some of the difficulties in detecting lung nodules include the various types and shapes of lung nodules, lung nodules near other lung structures, and similar visual aspects. This study proposes a new model named Lung_PAYNet, a pyramidal attention-based architecture, for improved lung nodule segmentation in low-dose CT images. In this architecture, the encoder and decoder are designed using an inverted residual block and swish activation function. It also employs a f

Tooth preservation of deeply destroyed teeth by forced orthodontic extrusion: A case series.

Maintaining and restoring teeth exhibiting subgingival or even subcrestal defect extensions represent a common problem in daily practice. Such teeth are often deemed "unrestorable" due to a significant hard tissue loss and defect locations violating the biologic width. In order to achieve a sufficient 2-mm-ferrule design and reestablish the biologic width, both surgical crown lengthening and orthodontic extrusion have been suggested. However, surgical crown lengthening has a negative effect on the attachment level of adjacent teeth as well as esthetic disadvantages particularly in the esthetic
