Multiple partners, risky partners and HIV risk among low-income urban women.

A sample of 671 predominantly single, young black women living in 10 low-income housing developments in five cities completed an anonymous questionnaire assessing factors related to their risk of contracting the human immunodeficiency virus, including their sexual behavior and condom use, and their partners' risk-related behaviors. In the two months before the 1994 survey, 17% of the women had sex with multiple partners and 22% had an exclusive partner who either had had other sexual partners in the past year or had a history of injection drug use; 40% had an exclusive partner who they believe

AIDS and STDs: risk behaviour patterns among female sex workers in Bali, Indonesia.

This study investigated AIDS and STD knowledge, risk behaviour patterns and condom use among three distinct groups of female commercial sex workers (CSWs) in Bali, Indonesia. Individual in-depth interviews were conducted with 71 female CSWs. These CSW groups differ in the prices they charge, their places and modes of employment, educational backgrounds, levels of AIDS and STD knowledge, number of clients served and levels of condom use. Knowledge of the routes of transmission and appropriate prevention practices is low among all groups, and despite significant differences in their number of cl

We used the mixed effects Poisson regression model accounting for clustering by establishment venue to compute the adjusted risk ratio (aRR) of the outcomes at follow-up. Motivating factors for dual-method contraceptive use among adolescents and young women: a qualitative investigation.

OBJECTIVE: This qualitative study explores how adolescents and young women perceive the need for and describe the use of dual method contraception. STUDY DESIGN: We interviewed 20 sexually active women aged 16-24 who attended an adolescent-focused Title X family-planning clinic and were using a non-barrier contraceptive method. We used a semi-structured interview guide that included domains related to sexual activity, knowledge of and use of contraceptives and condoms, and relationship factors. We coded transcripts using grounded theory techniques and used an iterative process to develop over…

Examining the Sexual Health Consequences of Alcohol Consumption Among Black Gay and Bisexual Men.

BACKGROUND: Black men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by HIV infection. Efforts are needed to understand correlates of HIV risk among this group. Alcohol consumption may have a role in HIV transmission given its association with condomless sex. This study aimed to examine the association between alcohol consumption (i.e., drinking before/during sex and levels of alcohol use problems) and condom use during lifetime, past 6 months, and the event (i.e., a specific sexual episode) level. METHODS: Black MSM (N = 102) reported sexual behavior and condom use for lifetime,

Understanding the Relationship Between Female Sex Workers and Their Intimate Partners: Lessons and Initial Findings From Participatory Research in North Karnataka, South India.

While traditional HIV prevention programs with female sex workers (FSWs) in Karnataka, India, have focused on reducing HIV transmission betw … wives, while IPs expect their FSW partners to accept their dominance in the relationship. Nonuse of condoms signals fidelity and elevates the status of the relationship almost to that of marriage, which helps FSWs enter the category of "good" (married) women. SURPRISING RESULTS: HIV TESTING AND CHANGES IN CONTRACEPTIVE PRACTICES AMONG YOUNG WOMEN IN MALAWI.

This study uses eight waves of data from the population-based Tsogolo la Thanzi study (2009-2011) in rural Malawi to examine changes in young women's contraceptive practices, including the use of condoms, non-barrier contraceptive methods and abstinence, following positive and negative HIV tests. The analysis factors in women's prior perceptions of their HIV status that may already be shaping their behaviour and separates surprise HIV test results from those that merely confirm what was already believed. Fixed-effects logistic regression models show that HIV testing frequently affects the cont…

Efficacy of an HIV/STI sexual risk-reduction intervention for African American adolescent girls in juvenile detention centers: a randomized controlled trial.

Few HIV/STI interventions exist for African American adolescent girls in juvenile detention. The objective was to evaluate the efficacy of an intervention to reduce incident STIs, improve HIV-preventive behaviors, and enhance psychosocial outcomes. We conducted a randomized controlled trial among African American adolescent girls (13-17 years, N = 188) in juvenile detention from March 2011 to May 2012. Assessments occurred at baseline and 3- and 6-months post-randomization and included: audio computer-assisted self-interview, condom skills assessment, and self-collected vaginal swab to detect

Sexual behaviour, structural vulnerabilities and HIV prevalence among female sex workers in Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: We sought to describe differences in individual and structural vulnerabilities faced by female sex workers (FSWs) in Pakistan between 2006 and 2011, and to characterise risk factors for inconsistent condom use and HIV prevalence in this population. METHODS: To describe differences in vulnerabilities, we analysed behavioural data from serial cross-sectional surveys conducted across nine cities in 2006 and 2011. Using data from 12 cities in 2011, we used logistic regression to characterise risk factors for (a) inconsistent condom use in the past month (N=6987), and (b) HIV (N=4301).

The Value of Assessing Self-Reported and Biological Indicators of Outcomes in Evaluating HIV Programs.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this manuscript, we present recent findings concerning concordance and discrepancy between biological measures and self-reports of these three outcomes of HIV programs: HIV status, adherence to antiretroviral medications (ARVs) and use of and adherence to pre-exposure prophylaxis medication (PrEP), and condom use/unprotected sex. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies suggest that three successive rapid HIV tests (for those whose first test in positive) might be reasonably inexpensive and valid biological data to collect to combine with self-reports of HIV status, dried blood s

Sexually-transmitted infections in adolescents and young adults in a large city of Northern Italy: a nine-year prospective survey.

To determine demographic, epidemiological, clinical features and risk factors of sexually-transmitted diseases (STD) in adolescents and young adults referring to a STD centre in Northern Italy, patients diagnosed with a STD and aged 13-20 years, were prospectively evaluated from the year 1991. Teenagers showed an appreciable and increasing risk of a broad spectrum of STD, and represented 3.6-13.3% of patients yearly diagnosed with a STD in a nine-year period. More than 10% of patients were under the age of 18, and did not report condom use in the six months preceding diagnosis in 96.7% of case

Female partner notification is a promising prevention strategy for controlling sexually transmitted infections in Shanghai: demographic and behavioral data from a Shanghai clinic.

We identified predictors of partner presentation and condom use among male gonorrhea patients in Shanghai, China. Stable relationships, intercourse in the preceding week, and longer duration of symptoms were associated with partner presentation. Men were more likely to use condoms with their spouse and if they were 35 years or younger.
