Home treatment of seizures as a strategy for the long-term management of febrile convulsions in children.

A cooperative study evaluating compliance and efficacy of Diazepam clisma in home treatment of febrile seizures in children was conducted from January 1979 to June 1981. Parents of 601 children admitted to hospital for a febrile convulsion were taught to use Diazepam clisma in the eventuality of a new seizure and asked to record the length of the episode. Complete follow-up was possible in 564 cases for an average time of 16.7 months. During the research period 109 convulsive episodes were registered in 76 children. Four of these children presented a seizure without fever. Diazepam clisma was

Nonfebrile seizures after febrile convulsions: possible role of chronic cytomegalovirus infection.

Twelve hundred children with convulsions when feverish were studied during a period of five years. Among them 52 subjects (4.33%) developed nonfebrile seizures after a period of eight months to five years from the first febrile convulsion (group A). Twenty-three children had neither afebrile seizures nor EEG abnormalities during the period of observation (group B). The two groups were comparable for age of the first febrile convulsion onset, sex, and socioeconomic status. None had risk factors for subsequent epilepsy or clinical signs of congenital cytomegalovirus infection. The isolation rate

A case of status epilepticus. Use of thiopentone and IPPV to control otherwise refractory convulsions.

A case of status epilepticus which was refractory to conventional anticonvulsants is described. The total dosage of thiopentone necessary to control the convulsions is greater than that previously reported. The use of regular plasma estimation of thiopentone levels, and of cortical monitoring with the Cerebral Function Monitor (Ormed Engineering) is described, and is recommended where anticonvulsants are used for prolonged control of status epilepticus and in dosages greater than is common practice.

Enhancement by anesthetic and convulsant barbiturates of GABA binding to rat brain synaptosomal membranes.

All of the anesthetic (amylobarbitone, butobarbitone, pentobarbitone, phenobarbitone, and secobarbitone) and convulsant (5-ethyl-5(3'-methylbut-2-enyl) barbituric acid (3M2B) and 5-ethyl-5-(2'-cyclohexylidene-ethyl) barbituric acid (CHEB) barbiturates tested enhanced the binding of GABA to a carefully prepared P2 membrane fraction from rat brain in a dose-dependent manner. These findings are in agreement with the potentiation of the inhibitory effects of GABA in many neuronal systems by both classes of barbiturates.

Convulsive seizure induced by intracerebral injection of semicarbazide (an anti-vitamin B6) in the mouse.

The direct injection of semicarbazide (SC), an antivitamin B6 (anti-B6), into the lateral ventricle of the mouse brain induced convulsion and tremors at a smaller dose after a shorter latent period than that in systemic administration. The symptoms were prevented by pyridoxine, aminooxyacetic acid or acetone, while they enhanced by pyridoxal, pyridoxal phosphate, or some other anti-B6. In mice fed a vitamin B6 (B6)-deficient diet, convulsion and tremors occurred at smaller doses of SC than those in mice given control food, and were counteracted by pyridoxine. On the other hand, mice into which

Calcium-dependent, iproveratril-resistant contractions of aortic strips induced by a convulsant barbiturate.

At 3 X 10(-5) M concentratons, 5-(2-cyclohexylideneëthyl)-5-ethyl barbituric acid (CHEB) causes a contraction of rabbit aortic strips that is equivalent to about half of the maximal response to norepinephrine. If a calcium-free medium is substituted for normal bathing solution and drug is added immediately thereafter, there is no response to the convulsant barbiturate but a nearly normal response to norepinephrine. When calcium is replaced in stepwise increments, the contractor response to CHEB appears in corresponding increments. The prompt influence of changes in external calcium-concentrati

Influenzavirus A2 infections presenting with febril convulsions and gastrointestinal symptoms in young children.

We present the clinical features of Influenzavirus A2 infection in 75 young children admitted to a children's hospital. The most common presenting features were febrile convulsions. vomiting, coughing, diarrhea, and anorexia. At any age, the illness may present with respiratory tract symptoms and signs but in young babies gastroinestinal symptoms are often the presenting complaint. Children aged one to three years often present with febrile convulsions. Only in older children does the adult pattern begin to emerge. Evidence is put forward to suggest that encephalitis in association with influe

[A histochemical study of brain tissue in experimental convulsive seizures (componetns of acetylcholine metabolism)].

The author studied substances related to acetylcholine metabolism (acetylcholinesterase, non-specific acetylcholinesterase, SH, SS-groups, histidine, Ca) using histochemical methods. There was an increase in the intensity of reactions on SH-groups and Ca, and a rise in the staining degree on SS-groups and acetylcholinesterase in the subconvulsive phase of the stroke. These shifts were more significant in the brain stem. A generalization of convulsive strokes intensifies the given changes and causes an increase of the intensity of the reactions on histidine after the end of the stroke (after 1,
