Experience and number of patients as associated factors toward clinical confidence among nursing students in caring for tuberculosis patients in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Nurses and nursing students are at greater risk of tuberculosis (TB) exposure due to their higher intensity contact with patients. In Indonesia, a country with high TB incidence, it is crucial to assess undergraduate nursing students' clinical confidence during their clinical practicums. PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore factors associated with nursing students' clinical confidence in caring for TB patients. METHODS: This cross-sectional study utilized an internet survey based on the United States National TB Curriculum Consortium (NTCC) in September and November 2020. The sur…

The impact of simulation-based medical education on resident management of emergencies in pediatric anesthesiology.

BACKGROUND: Resident education in pediatric anesthesiology is challenging. Traditional curricula for anesthesiology residency programs have included a combination of didactic lectures and mentored clinical service, which can be variable. Limited pediatric medical knowledge, technical inexperience, and heightened resident anxiety further challenge patient care. We developed a pediatric anesthesia simulation-based curriculum to address crises related to hypoxemia and dysrhythmia management in the operating room as an adjunct to traditional didactic and clinical experiences. AIMS: The primary ob…

A CURE for Microbiology Experiment: Isolation and Characterization of Antimicrobial-Producing Lactic Acid Bacteria From Fermented Sichuan Pickle Against Pathogenic Bacteria.

Traditional microbiology experimental teaching methodology, often based on rigid "cookbook" experiment plans, fails to meet the growing need to cultivate skilled and innovative individuals. Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) provide a solution by integrating research-based learning into the curriculum, offering an opportunity to improve the "hard" and "soft" skills for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students. In this study, a CURE was incorporated into the microbiology experiment curriculum focusing on the isolation and characterization of antimic…

Teaching resident physicians to work with the previously incarcerated patient.

Over 2 million adults in the United States are incarcerated and over 650,000 return to the community each year. This disparate population is known to have an elevated burden of chronic disease and lower socioeconomic status. Medical residency training about care for incarcerated or previously incarcerated patients is significantly lacking in the United States. Curriculum can be developed and implemented in residency programs to help physicians learn how to work with this population, be sensitive to their unique needs, and achieve positive health outcomes. This article describes a method for "e…

Dental students' regard for patients from often-stigmatized populations: findings from an Indian dental school.

The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare a group of Indian dental students' attitudes toward HIV-positive status, substance misuse, intellectual disability, acute mental illness, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) orientation. Two hundred and twelve students at various stages in the dental curriculum anonymously completed the Medical Condition Regard Scale (MCRS) for these conditions. Friedman and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used, respectively, to analyze the intrastage and interstage differences in MCRS scores. The results revealed that the regard of dental students was con…

Analysis of swimming teaching programs, aquatic competencies and specific skills in school settings from early childhood to secondary education: A systematic review.

The teaching of swimming in school contexts has become increasingly important due to the benefits in the integral development of students and the prevention of aquatic accidents. This study analyses, by means of a systematic review, the aquatic teaching programmes and Competencies implemented in school settings over the last 25 years, from infant to secondary education. The Methodological approach was based on the PRISMA guidelines, with searches in scientific databases (PubMed, Scopus, Sport Discus and Web of Science) and secondary sources. Sixteen studies were selected according to the PICOS

Is This Still Medical Education? The Educational Use of Nude Pediatric Clinical Photographs: Bioethical Reassessment.

Clinical photography can convey phenotypic, anatomical, and diagnostic information that may be difficult to replace with text. This also applies to highly sensitive pediatric clinical photographs when the scope of patient exposure is necessary to achieve a specific educational objective. This viewpoint addresses a more specific problem: "How should the educational function of a highly sensitive pediatric clinical photograph be evaluated when the condition identified with the photograph is substantively described elsewhere in the educational material?" The analysis is grounded in a documented l

EUPC Implementation in Greece.

The European Prevention Curriculum (EUPC) was introduced in Greece through the European Commission co-funded project, ASAP training. In this project, a comprehensive training on EUPC for decision-, opinion- and policy-makers was developed with basic and advanced modules. The first EUPC trainings in Greece began in 2019. Since then, both the basic and the advanced modules of the EUPC have been offered by four accredited trainers. Between 2019 and mid-2024, EUPC training engaged 89 professionals. Trainings are conducted based on the Trainer's Guide developed under ASAP, with updates incorporated…

What Do We Teach to Engineering Students: Embedded Ethics, Morality, and Politics.

In the past few years, calls for integrating ethics modules in engineering curricula have multiplied. Despite this positive trend, a number of issues with these 'embedded' programs remains. First, learning goals are underspecified. A second limitation is the conflation of different dimensions under the same banner, in particular confusion between ethics curricula geared towards addressing the ethics of individual conduct and curricula geared towards addressing ethics at the societal level. In this article, we propose a tripartite framework to overcome these difficulties. Our framework analytic

New context, new content-Rethinking genital anatomy in textbooks.

It has been widely claimed that reductions in allocated teaching time and the widespread implementation of short-cut teaching methodologies have led to a shortfall in anatomy knowledge among graduating doctors. This decline in knowledge is evident in the failure of anatomy content to prepare graduates for contemporary clinical practice. The implications for postgraduate surgical training are addressed in the numerous extracurricular anatomy courses available to surgical candidates. This paper focuses on genital diversity and its relevance to non-surgical graduates, thus highlighting another po

Supporting Scientific Practice through Model-Based Inquiry: A Students'-Eye View of Grappling with Data, Uncertainty, and Community in a Laboratory Experience.

Modeling is a scientific practice that supports creative reasoning, motivates inquiry, and facilitates community sense-making. This paper ex … arning. We claim that modeling emerged as a legitimate practice among students, because the AIM-Bio curriculum encouraged diversity in students' models, provided opportunities for students to grapple with uncertainty, and fostered collaboration between students. We suggest that biology educators consider how model-based inquiry can allow students to particip …

Learner Metacognitive Insights from Writing Professional Clinical Practicum Reflections: An Instrumental Case Study of a University-Based MLS Program.

BACKGROUND: MLS curricula often focus on factual theory and skills-based competencies. Evolving practitioners also need professional reflection skills to continually improve. The problem giving rise to the need for this intervention was that learners were not reflecting on their practicum experiences beyond thinking of tasks completed. The purpose of this qualitative case was to explore learner insight that arose from writing professional reflections across clinical practica during a university-based MLS program. Two elaborating research questions asked what metacognitive insights MLS learners
