[Peculiarities of tear production in patients with dacryoadenitis].

The influence of chronic adenitis and its surgical treatment on tear production and osmolarity was studied. A long-term follow-up (2-65 months) after lacrimal gland extirpation showed a trend for recovery of both basal and reflex lacrimation. Comparison of complaints and functional and pathohistological results allowed to consider retention cysts as a risk factor for dry eye syndrome in the postoperative period.

Ocular complications associated with brucellosis in an endemic area.

PURPOSE: To report the ocular manifestations associated with brucellosis in an endemic area. METHODS: We prospectively evaluated 147 patients with the diagnosis of brucellosis between May 1996 to May 2000 and recorded the ocular and systemic findings. The diagnosis was based on clinical findings, positive serological and bacteriological tests (Brucella agglutination test: over 1/160 titer, blood culture). RESULTS: Thirty-eight patients (26.0%) with brucellosis had ocular complications: conjunctivitis in 26 (17.7%), anterior uveitis in six (4.1%), posterior uveitis in one (0.7%), dacryoadenit

AS101 regulates the Teff/Treg balance to alleviate rabbit autoimmune dacryoadenitis through modulating NFATc2.

Sjögren's syndrome (SS) dry eye can cause ocular surface inflammation and lacrimal gland (LG) damage, leading to discomfort and potential vision problems. The existing treatment options for SS dry eye are currently constrained. We investigated the possible therapeutic effect and the underlying mechanism of AS101 in autoimmune dry eye. AS101 was injected subconjunctivally into a rabbit model of autoimmune dacryoadenitis and its therapeutic effects were determined by evaluating clinical and histological scores. The expressions of effector T cells (Teff)/regulatory T cells (Treg)-related transcri

Subtotal Exenteration of the Orbit for Benign Orbital Disease.

PURPOSE: Total exenteration of the orbit with removal of the eye globe and surrounding tissues is most frequently indicated for malignant tumors. The indications for exenteration of the orbit for benign orbital lesion are rare. Not adequately treated infection of the orbit by systemic antibiotics can lead to destructive changes of soft tissues in the region of the orbit and partial exenteration with eyelid sparing technique is necessary. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. METHODS: Data of all patients between 2010 and 2018 who underwent exenteration of the orbit for periocular lesions infilt

Ophthalmic manifestations of IgG4-related disease: single-center experience and literature review.

OBJECTIVES: IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is an inflammatory disorder responsible for fibrosing, tumefactive lesions that can involve the lacrimal gland as well as the extraocular muscles, orbital soft tissues, sclera, and local nerves. We reviewed IgG4-related ophthalmic disease (IgG4-ROD), including the natural history, pathology, and treatment, based on our center's experience and that reported in the literature. METHODS: We identified 27 patients with orbital manifestations from our IgG4-RD registry; six were excluded because no pathology was available for review. All 21 cases included h

Adeno-associated virus-mediated IL-10 gene transfer suppresses lacrimal gland immunopathology in a rabbit model of autoimmune dacryoadenitis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector-mediated viral (v)IL-10 gene expression on lacrimal gland (LG) immunopathology and ocular surface disease in a rabbit model of induced autoimmune dacryoadenitis (ID). METHODS: Autologous peripheral blood lymphocytes, activated in a mixed-cell reaction when cocultured with purified rabbit lacrimal epithelial cells, induce a Sjögren's-like autoimmune dacryoadenitis when injected directly back into the donor animal's inferior LG. Four weeks after disease induction, AAV vector expressing the vIL-10 gene under control of a tetr

Bilateral dacryoadenitis complicated by lymphocytic hypophysitis.

Three patients developed dacryoadenitis (DA) or lymphocytic pneumonitis before the diagnosis of lymphocytic hypophysitis (LyH). There were two previous reports of concurrence of DA and LyH. Our patients add support to the idea that DA and LyH are manifestations of a systemic autoimmune disease. We suggest that the discovery of DA should prompt imaging and endocrine investigation of LyH.

Intranasal laser-assisted dacryocystorhinostomy with the use of a surgical microscope.

PURPOSE: Obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct is a serious chronic condition, treatment for which has not yet been successfully resolved. Several methods have been proposed for the management of chronic epiphora. A modified method of intranasal laser-assisted dacryocystorhinostomy with the use of a surgical microscope is described. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The procedure is a modification to the West and Veis-Claus-Guttich method. The primary and late results of this method are presented for 53 patients over the past 7 years with chronic epiphora caused by stenosis of the nasolacrimal duct. Sele

Surgical debulking for idiopathic dacryoadenitis: a diagnosis and a cure.

PURPOSE: Idiopathic inflammatory tumor of the lacrimal gland, also called idiopathic dacryoadenitis, generally is treated with high-dose, long-term systemic corticosteroids, despite their limited success, high recurrence rate, and incidence of drug-induced side effects. This study describes the outcome of patients with idiopathic dacryoadenitis who were managed with surgical debulking. DESIGN: Retrospective case series from 2 tertiary referral centers. PARTICIPANTS: Forty-six patients (46 lacrimal glands). METHODS: Review of the clinical records, radiologic scans, and histopathologic specim

Spontaneous autoimmune dacryoadenitis in aged CD25KO mice.

To investigate time-related immunopathological changes in the lacrimal glands (LGs) of CD25KO mice, we examined LGs of C57BL/6 (wild-type) and CD25KO mice at 8, 12, and 16 weeks of age. T cell infiltration was quantified by flow cytometry, and gland function by tear peroxidase activity and epidermal growth factor mRNA expression. T helper (Th)-1, -2 and -17-associated cytokine expression was evaluated by real-time PCR. Epithelial apoptosis was assessed by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling assay and activated caspase-3 staining. Eight-week-old CD25KO mice demonstrated

Dacryoscintigraphy: an effective tool in the evaluation of postoperative epiphora.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Dacryoscintigraphy is a grossly underutilized nuclear medicine procedure for assessing the patency of nasolacrimal ducts. It is an alternate noninvasive modality requiring no added expertise when compared with dacryocystography, an invasive radiological counterpart. Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is a surgical procedure in which a patent rhinostomy is made so that a low-pressure lacrimal bypass system is created, thus relieving epiphora, dacryocystitis or mucocele. DCR has been accepted as a highly successful procedure in the management of epiphora from nasolacrimal duct obstr…

Diode laser-assisted endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy: a comparison of three different combinations of adjunctive procedures.

Chronic dacryocystitis is a frequently encountered condition which can be corrected by dacryocystorhinostomy. Today, the diode laser is increasingly put to use in such corrective operations. This study aims to answer the questions of which adjunctive procedures and which combinations of such procedures are necessary and effective in securing more successful outcomes in diode laser dacryocystorhinostomy. This prospective randomized study included eighty patients (13 male, 67 female) who underwent dacryocystorhinostomy in our hospital during the 2 year period of January 2009-January 2011. The pa…

Ocular adnexal IgG4-related disease has uniform clinicopathology.

IgG4-related disease is a recently proposed clinical entity with several unique clinicopathological features. Ocular adnexal IgG4-related disease, however, has not well been clarified. The purpose of the present study was to examine 21 patients (10 men, 11 women; age range, 39-86 years) with ocular adnexal IgG4-related disease. In 17 out of 21 patients (81%), the lacrimal glands were involved and bilateral lacrimal gland swelling was frequently observed (n = 12; 70.6%). In contrast, the conjunctiva was not involved in any of the patient. Histology was uniform with marked lymphoplasmacytic infi
