"Psychiatric assessment of deaf and mute patients - A case series".

Deafness is negatively associated with higher distress, depression, somatization, and loneliness in patients of all age groups. The psychiatric presentation of patient also varies. Due to lack of proper communication, clinical approach often becomes quite difficult. We will be discussing various psychiatric presentations in 3 different deaf mute patients. We will also be highlighting the different clinical approach applied to all the patients. This case series might help in giving an insight into the psychiatric symptoms of deaf mute patients which might pave way for new diagnostic guidelines …

The lived experience of depression among culturally Deaf adults.

Culturally Deaf adults lost hearing at early ages, communicate primarily in American Sign Language (ASL), and self-identify as culturally Deaf. Communication barriers lead to isolation, low self-esteem, abuse, and inadequate health care. Screening Deaf patients for depressive symptoms poses challenge. Nurses are rarely familiar with ASL, and depression screening tools aren't easily translated from English to ASL. Consequently, Deaf adults are not adequately screened for depression. Qualitative interviews were conducted with culturally Deaf adults, and certified interpreters helped to enhance u

Tracking of the genetic deafness associated to the aging in Brazilian patients.

INTRODUCTION: Presbyacusis is the most common cause of auditory dysfunction that is generally associated with aging in industrialized societies. OBJECTIVE: To assess the presence of the mitochondrial 4977-bp deletion in Brazilian patients with presbyacusis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred unrelated patients of both genders were clinically examined to exclude syndromic forms of deafness. Specific oligonucleotide primers were designed to amplify the cytochrome b gene and the 4977-bp deletion of the mtDNA using the polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: The mtDNA(4977) deletion was not identif…

Ophthalmologic abnormalities in children from a Turkish school for the deaf.

The aim of this study was to determine the nature and prevalence of ophthalmologic abnormalities in deaf children. Complete ophthalmologic examinations were performed on 104 children aged 7 to 20 years from a Turkish school for the deaf. Of 104 children, 42 children (40.4%) had some form of ophthalmologic abnormality, with the vast majority (31 patients, 29.8%) being refractive errors. The prevalence of hypermetropia, myopia and astigmatism was found to be higher over the general population. Of 104 children, 19 (18.2%) had ocular motility disturbances and one had external adnexal anomaly. Two

Causes of hearing impairment in deaf pupils with a mental handicap.

An aetiological study was performed on 122 deaf pupils (57 aged < 20 years, 65 aged > 20 years) at the Institute for the Deaf in Sint-Michielsgestel, The Netherlands. Besides hearing impairment with thresholds of > 60 dB HL, all the participants had a mental handicap with a non-verbal IQ of 40-80. Sixteen per cent of them were of non-Dutch origin. The cause of hearing impairment was acquired in 48%, inherited in 17%, chromosomal in 4% and unknown in 30%. In comparison with other studies on the aetiology of childhood deafness, acquired causes predominated over inherited causes, which may be typ…

Familial mitochondrial encephalomyopathy with deaf-mutism, ophthalmoplegia and leukodystrophy.

We report two sisters (32 and 36 years old) with familial deaf-mutism, progressive external ophthalmoplegia, leukodystrophy and mitochondrial myopathy. T2-weighted brain MRI demonstrated diffuse symmetrical high intensity areas in the white matter. Their muscle biopsies showed ragged-red fibers and cytochrome c oxidase (CCO)-negative fibers. CCO activity in biopsied muscle decreased to about 20% of normal control. They had no deletions of the mitochondrial DNA and no point mutations in mitochondrial tRNA. Their brother was diagnosed as having Kugelberg-Welander disease, grand mal seizures and

Defining and observing social signals in deaf and hearing infants.

Infant gaze, gestures, and affective expression have become generally accepted as indicators of the infant's efforts to initiate or resume interaction with a partner, particularly during moments when the mother may be temporarily unresponsive as shown experimentally in the maternal "Still-Face" situation. Previous studies comparing deaf and hearing infants using this paradigm have revealed diminished signalling by deaf infants with hearing mothers, when signals were defined by the typical indices mentioned above. This study compares results from both a microanalytic coding system (used with 59

Changing attitudes about the employability of the deaf and hard of hearing.

Hearing students viewed a videotape featuring positive deaf and hard of hearing role models in a variety of employment settings. Attitudes about the employability of these individuals were measured in a pretest posttest control group design. Attitudes after viewing the role model videotape were significantly more positive than those reported prior to viewing the videotape. Respondents were able to generalize their positive attitudes beyond the limited number of occupations featured in the tape to other occupations. Further, the attitude change was of an enduring nature, with posttest two resul

Clinical and neuroradiological findings in a case of pure word deafness.

Pure Word Deafness is a clinical syndrome included among the aphasias and is marked by complete deafness of sudden onset with conserved ability to understand and read the written word and with no speech disorders. We report the case of 61 year old man in whom pure word deafness developed after two episodes of acute cerebral ischemia in quick succession. Neuroimaging procedures, that is: computed tomography scan, single photon emission computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, revealed the presence of two ischemic lesions in the temporal cortex bilaterally. Neurophysiological investig…
