The only common skin disease in the pottery industry is eczematous dermatitis. Low-grade dermatitis, not necessitating absence from work, may affect 5-10% of the workforce. In perhaps only 1% is the condition severe enough to cause significant absence from work and the attendant financial problems. Mostly the problem is that of a cumulative irritant dermatitis associated particularly with wet work. Such a pattern is more common in patients with a history of childhood eczema. As the prognosis of industrial dermatitis is poor, such subjects should be counselled against work that occasions exposu

Epicutaneous tests were performed 1979 using a standard test series of 31 substances on 436 hospitalized patients. The positive results were analysed for relevance and latency. Occupational and environmental origin of sensitization was looked for in both sexes. The order of allergens causing contact dermatitis in women was: Dichromate, phenylbutazone, cobalt (as concomitant allergy?), balsam of Peru, p-phenylene diamine, chloramphenicol, phenyl-isopropyl-p-phenylene diamine, N-phenyl-cyclohexyl-p-phenylene diamine (as concomitant allergy?), mercury amidochlorate, formaldehyde, mercury bichlori

Using a cross-sectional survey of potato farm workers in northern Ecuador, we examined the relationship between pesticide exposure and skin disorders. From a farm population census, all pesticide applicators and 1/2 of exposed field workers were selected. Controls were age-matched from urban occupations. Individual exposure measures included overall years and current hours working with pesticides. Farm-level measures included numbers of applications over the last 6 months and an application practices score (range 0-4). Each participant underwent a clinical skin examination, with patch tests to

INTRODUCTION: Hairdressing is associated with a wide range of disorders. This is particularly true in the African hairdresser, who is saddled with the responsibility of 'taming' the rather difficult-to-manage African hair, and is thus exposed to a wide range of chemical, biological and physical materials in the hair grooming process. We therefore sought to determine the prevalence and pattern of occupational skin disorders among hairdressers in Ibadan, one of the oldest and largest cities in Nigeria.
METHODS: This was a cross sectional study of hairdressers conducted in 2013 in Ibadan, Nigeri

Occupational dermatological problems are common among dental health personnel. We conducted a questionnaire survey to investigate the frequency of occupational dermatological problems among dental health personnel in Hordaland county, Norway. 333 of 394 employees (85%) answered the questionnaire. 148 of 333 respondents (44%) reported skin complaints. The proportion of respondents with skin complaints was lower among those with more than 20 years experience in dental health care. Hands were almost always involved. Use of gloves were reported to be the main cause of skin problems, especially the

A complex occupational hygienic and clinical allergologic investigation in a methylene-diphenyl diizocyanate (MDI)-based polyurethane products manufacture was carried out for the first time in this country. The average MDI concentrations for a shift are within the limits of TWA, but during short operations exceed STEL and reach 0.072-0.181 mg/m3. By clinical and immuno-allergologic methods, applied on 46 MDI-exposed workers and 42 controls, the sensibilizing effect on the respiratory system, skin and eyes was detected. The allergic reactions take the course of bronchial asthma (6.5%), rhinitis

OBJECTIVE: An examination glove that delivers aloe vera (AV) gel to the gloved hand was studied in 30 adult females with bilateral occupational dry skin with or without irritant contact dermatitis (with or without erythema, fissures, and excoriations).
METHODS: All participants were factory assembly-line workers with repeated superficial skin trauma who attributed their dry, irritated, emollient-dependent skin to a common cause (occupational exposure). Participants were sequentially enrolled (after written informed consent, n = 29 evaluable participants) into an open, contralateral comparison

Nickel is the most common cause of contact allergy in the general population and the most frequently detected allergen in patients patch tested for suspected allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). ACD from nickel is a typical type IV hypersensitivity. Nickel allergy is mostly caused by nonoccupational exposure, such as jewelry and clothing decorations, metal tools, medical devices (mainly orthopedic and orthodontic implants, cardiovascular prosthesis), eyeglasses, utensils, keys, pigment for paint, cosmetics, and food (mainly legumes, chocolate, salmon, peanuts). Occupational exposure can involve

Hand eczema in relation to occupation was studied in an industrial city. Questionnaires were sent to 20,000 individuals aged 20-65 years, randomly selected from the population register of the city. Those subjects (1385) considering themselves to have had hand eczema within the previous 12 months were invited to a dermatological examination including patch testing. It was found that the reported 1-year period prevalence of hand eczema in the total sample was 11.8%. The only occupational group reporting a statistically significant higher 1-year period prevalence was service work, 15.4%. Among al

BACKGROUND: Migrant workers (MWs) generally perform dangerous jobs and have reduced access to occupational health (OH) care, therefore being prone to developing occupational diseases (OD). The aim of the work is to describe a case series of MWs and report on related outcomes for OH professionals.
METHODS: A case series of 724 MWs, sent from January 2001 to June 2013 to a public OH unit for OD or fitness-for-work (FFW) evaluation, was entered in a dedicated database and elaborated for descriptive statistics with Microsoft Excel.
RESULTS: MWs were mostly (75%) men, with a mean age of 40. They
