Future Directions in Racial Trauma Research Among Ethnoracially Minoritized Youth.

Racial discrimination is one of the most disruptive and psychologically damaging experiences that ethnoracially minoritized youth encounter. Research resoundly indicates that such discriminatory experiences can evoke trauma-like responses that can endure across development. However, literature documenting the traumatic implications of racial discrimination among youth remains limited by significant gaps that constrain understanding of the developmental significance and impact of this association. To this end, the current article aims to provide perspectives on avenues of future research needed

The Relationship among Anxiety, Worry, Perceived Stress, Defense Mechanisms, and High Levels of Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms: A Discriminant Analytic Approach.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a pathological condition that may lead to a significant deterioration in the quality of life over time. Therefore, the study of the elements that can characterize the disorder could be considered of great clinical interest and relevance. The aim of the present research was to empirically discriminate the influence of perceived stress, state anxiety, worry, and defense mechanisms (mature, neurotic, and immature) at different levels of post-traumatic stress symptoms. A sample of 1250 participants (69.5% women, 30.5% men; Mage = 34.52, SD = 11.857) complet

A new technique for metacarpophalangeal joint replantation after four-finger amputation.

Although finger amputations are not life-threatening, they are functionally and psychologically problematic for the patient. Successful replantation of amputated fingers results in better appearance and functional outcome. Therefore, the patient's satisfaction and psychological status improve. Usually, the first step of replantation involves bone and joint fixation. Various fixation methods can be used. Rapid and rigid fixation allows the surgeon to focus on repairing the soft tissues. In this report, we describe four-finger metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint replantation with a new technique whe

Different types of well-being? A cross-cultural examination of hedonic and eudaimonic well-being.

A large international sample was used to test whether hedonia (the experience of positive emotional states and satisfaction of desires) and eudaimonia (the presence of meaning and development of one's potentials) represent 1 overarching well-being construct or 2 related dimensions. A latent correlation of .96 presents negligible evidence for the discriminant validity between Diener's (1984) subjective well-being model of hedonia and Ryff's (1989) psychological well-being model of eudaimonia. When compared with known correlates of well-being (e.g., curiosity, gratitude), eudaimonia and hedonia

The importance of degree versus type of maltreatment: a cluster analysis of child abuse types.

The author conducted secondary data analysis of 3 previously reported studies (D. J. Higgins & M.P. McCabe, 1998, 2000b, 2003) to examine whether respondents are best classified according to their experience of separate maltreatment types (sexual abuse, physical abuse, psychological maltreatment, neglect, and witnessing family violence) or whether their experience reflects a single unifying concept: child maltreatment. The author conducted a cluster analysis of the combined dataset followed by a confirmatory discriminant function analysis. Finally, the differences in psychological adjustment b

Housing-related payment hardship and associations with health and well-being: a 15-year longitudinal study in a National Sample of U.S. adults.

Many U.S. households face growing difficulty affording housing and related costs, with some missing payments for housing or utilities due to limited resources. Sparse research has examined how housing-related payment hardship relates to well-being over the life course. We used three waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health; n = 7673) to estimate associations of two housing-related payment hardship exposures (inability to pay rent/mortgage and utilities) in early adulthood (Wave IV; 2008-2009) with 36 health and well-being outcomes 15 years later (Wave

Making space for sexuality in the therapy room: A qualitative study exploring the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ people in psychological therapy in the UK.

OBJECTIVES: LGBTQ+ people in the UK are exposed to social stigma, abuse and discrimination, which often translates to increased prevalence of mental health difficulties due to minority stress. Despite its relevance as a facet of identity, sexuality is generally ignored or pathologised in mental health services. Therefore, this research aimed to explore and understand the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals in psychological therapy; specifically, how sexuality features within the therapeutic process. DESIGN: Social constructivist qualitative study. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were compl

Tone-Burst Auditory Brainstem Response and Cortical Potentials in Diagnosis of Syndromic Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder.

In this study, we report our findings of comprehensive evaluation in a man with syndromic craniofacial features, cognitive impairment, and hearing loss. The patient underwent psychological and genetic testing and screening for 133 genetic mutations associated with hearing loss, as well as extensive audiological evaluation to assess the auditory pathway between the middle ear and the auditory cortex. Psychological testing showed moderate cognitive impairment. Genetic testing did not reveal a genetic mutation for hearing loss. Audiological evaluation revealed mixed hearing loss and signs of audi

A trans agent of social change in incarceration: A psychobiographical study of Natasha Keating.

OBJECTIVES: This psychobiography focuses on the advocacy work of Natasha Keating, a trans woman incarcerated in two male prisons in Australia between 2000 and 2007. Incarcerated trans women are a vulnerable group who experience high levels of victimization and discrimination. However, Natasha advocated for her rights while incarcerated and this advocacy contributed to substantial changes in the carceral system. This psychobiography uses psychological understandings of resilience as well as the Transgender Resilience Intervention Model (TRIM) to investigate the factors that enabled this advocac

A Misuse of Bion's "Reverie-ing Mother": Another Weapon in the War against Women as Waged in the Consulting Room.

"The war against women" is a systemic process of discrimination that seeks to subjugate women. In this essay, I will critically examine a contemporary paper, published in a well-known psychoanalytic journal, that views the patient through the lens of Bion's "reverie-ing mother" concept. I argue that leaning upon any particular theory to explain an individual's complex psychological disturbance adheres to a reductionistic line of reasoning that falls prey to the genetic fallacy; interpreting psychological phenomena in this way becomes a myopically focused perch that narrows the clinician's rang

Exploring the psychological impact of HIV: health comparisons of older Australian HIV-positive and HIV-negative gay men.

Little is known about the impact of HIV on the mental health of older gay men. In a nationwide online survey, 1,135 Australian gay men aged 40 years and older reported on their physical and mental health. Compared with HIV-negative men, those with HIV were more likely to report currently receiving treatment for a mental health condition (37 vs. 25 %, p = 0.001), but no more likely to report treatment for a major physical health condition other than HIV (39 % vs. 40 %). On a measure of psychological distress, more HIV-positive men were highly distressed (14 vs. 8 %, p = 0.01). There were no sig

fMRI evidence of aberrant neural adaptation for objects in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) adaptation (also known as fMRI repetition suppression) has been widely used to characterize stimulus selectivity in vivo, a fundamental feature of neuronal processing in the brain. We investigated whether SZ patients and BD patients show aberrant fMRI adaptation for object perception. About 52 SZ patients, 55 BD patients, and 53 community controls completed an object discrimination task with three conditions: the same object presented twice, two exemplars from the same category, and two exemplars from different categories. We also administered two f

Effects of acute psychosocial stress on neural activity to emotional and neutral faces in a face recognition memory paradigm.

Previous studies have shown that acute psychosocial stress impairs recognition of declarative memory and that emotional material is especially sensitive to this effect. Animal studies suggest a central role of the amygdala which modulates memory processes in hippocampus, prefrontal cortex and other brain areas. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate neural correlates of stress-induced modulation of emotional recognition memory in humans. Twenty-seven healthy, right-handed, non-smoker male volunteers performed an emotional face recognition task. During encoding, par

A detailed analysis of the early context extinction deficits seen in APPswe/PS1dE9 female mice and their relevance to preclinical Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an incurable age-related neurodegenerative condition, characterised by progressive decline in cognitive and physical functions, and extensive brain damage. Identifying cognitive deficits that accompany early AD is critical, as the accompanying synaptic changes can be effectively targeted by current treatments - at present AD is typically not diagnosed until brain pathology is established, and treatment relatively ineffective. We therefore examined early cognitive changes in 4-month-old mice over-expressing 2 genes responsible for AD (APPswe/PS1d9 mouse line). Experi

Avian agnosia: A window into auditory semantics.

The functional and neural organisation of auditory knowledge is relatively poorly understood. The breakdown of conceptual knowledge in semantic dementia has revealed that pre-morbid expertise influences the extent to which knowledge is differentiated. Whether this principle applies to a similar extent in the auditory domain is not yet known. Previous reports of patients with impaired auditory vs. intact visual expert knowledge suggest that expertise may have differential effects upon the organisation of auditory and visual knowledge. An equally plausible alternative, however, is that auditory

Moderate prenatal alcohol exposure impairs performance by adult male rats in an object-place paired-associate task.

Memory impairments, including spatial and object processing, are often observed in individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. The neurobiological basis of memory deficits after prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is often linked to structural and functional alterations in the medial temporal lobe, including the hippocampus. Recent evidence suggests that the medial temporal lobe plays a critical role in processing high-order sensory stimuli such as complex objects and their associated locations in space. In the first experiment, we tested male rat offspring with moderate PAE in a medial tem

Measuring discrimination- and reversal learning in mouse models within 4 days and without prior food deprivation.

Many neurological and psychiatric disorders are characterized by deficits in cognitive flexibility. Modeling cognitive flexibility in mice enables the investigation of mechanisms underlying these deficits. The majority of currently available behavioral tests targeting this cognitive domain are reversal learning tasks that require scheduled food restriction, extended training periods and labor-intensive, and stress-inducing animal handling. Here, we describe a novel 4-day (4-d) continuously running task measuring discrimination- and reversal learning in an automated home cage (CognitionWall DL/

A Computational Model of Implicit Memory Captures Dyslexics' Perceptual Deficits.

UNLABELLED: Dyslexics are diagnosed for their poor reading skills, yet they characteristically also suffer from poor verbal memory and often from poor auditory skills. To date, this combined profile has been accounted for in broad cognitive terms. Here we hypothesize that the perceptual deficits associated with dyslexia can be understood computationally as a deficit in integrating prior information with noisy observations. To test this hypothesis we analyzed the performance of human participants in an auditory discrimination task using a two-parameter computational model. One parameter capture

The body inversion effect is mediated by face-selective, not body-selective, mechanisms.

Evidence suggesting that the brain has specialized mechanisms for processing human bodies include the discovery of body-selective brain areas and the behavioral body inversion effect (BIE). Interestingly, the BIE (worse discrimination of inverted vs upright bodies) disappears for headless bodies, implying a critical role of the head in this effect. Previous studies have shown that the face inversion effect is mediated by the fusiform face-selective area. Given the central role that the head plays in the behavioral BIE, we asked whether it is mediated by face-selective or body-selective areas.
