A 32-year-old man presented to the emergency department (ED) with lower abdominal pain and constipation. He related chronic ingestion of large amounts of opium. Physical examination showed mild abdominal tenderness and gingival discoloration. Diagnostic studies showed a mild hypochromic, microcytic anemia with basophilic stippling of the red blood cells. Most patients with acute hepatitis C (HCV) infections are asymptomatic, while 15% present with jaundice. Intranasal drug use can uncommonly transmit HCV via contaminated instruments and nasal epithelial breakdown. Given a 15% prevalence of HCV infection in chronic methamphetamine users, recognition of potential transmission routes is important to target prevention and screening efforts in this population.

Year-round variations of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs, also known as emerging contaminants) were examined in river water, dam water, and treated municipal wastewater in the South African setting. To determine the effects of a sudden and sustained reduction in heroin purity on the toxicology of heroin overdose, 959 consecutive heroin overdose cases autopsied at the NSW Department of Forensic Medicine (1/1/1998-31/12/2006) were analysed.
