This study presents a 15 year experience of surgical treatment in 47 patients with congenital atresia of the ear. Emphasizing on the importance of pre-surgical evaluation of the patients for a better prognostic indicator. The ages of 40 patients were between 5-15 years. 24 patients (61%) had complete atresia and 23 (49%) incomplete. 27 patients (57%) with bilateral disease and 20 (43%) unilateral. A choristoma is a non-neoplastic proliferation of histologically normal tissue occurring at an abnormal site. The first known Danish case of a salivary gland choristoma in the middle ear is presented. This is a very rare condition of which only 20 cases have been reported. Fourteen non-hypoplastic congenitally deformed ears were treated with a simple splint with satisfactory results in all but one. These deformities can be treated non-surgically in the early neonatal period, effectively, without anaesthetic, and with minimal cost. We confirm other reports that better results are obtained and a shorter duration of splintage is needed if treatment is started early in the neonatal period. Non-hypoplastic congenital ear deformities are amenable to non-surgical treatment with splinting in the neonatal period. It is therefore important to determine when the deformity occurs. 100 postal questionnaires were sent to parents to study, retrospectively, the evolution of the prominent ear deformity in their children. 79 questionnaires were returned. Pneumocystis carinii is the opportunistic pathogen frequently causing pneumonitis in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Extrapulmonic manifestation of P carinii is unusual and is commonly associated with severe systemic illness, other immune deficiency status, malignancy, or immune suppression. We describe a case of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome with manifestations of P carinii otitis media with severe otalgia and conductive hearing loss.

Bilateral deafness can occur in patients with Menière's disease who have undergone a labyrinthectomy in one ear. Since simplified methods have been generated to measure psychoacoustic tuning curves (PTC), they have proved to be useful in clinical workup.
