Feasibility of Schema Therapy for Recurrent Depression in a Disaster Relief Worker with Prior Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Treatment Using Prolonged Exposure Therapy.

This report presents the follow-up treatment course of a previously published case that demonstrated the effectiveness of prolonged exposure (PE) therapy for a disaster relief worker. The patient, a municipal employee in Fukushima Prefecture, developed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mood disorders after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent disasters. This follow-up focuses on the period from 2021 to early 2024, during which the patient experienced symptom recurrence after his father's death. This event revealed psychological patterns similar to his disaster-related re

Factors associated with physical violence against children in Haiti: a national population-based cross-sectional survey.

Considering the recent sociopolitical and environmental stress in Haiti, from the COVID pandemic to repeated natural disasters, we aimed to identify risk and protective factors associated with childhood physical violence (CPV) after the 2010 earthquake. A population-based national survey was administered to 13-24-year-old Haitians in 2012. A three-stage clustered sample design was utilized. Adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR) and risk ratios (aRR). 64% of survey respondents experienced CPV were estimated. Respondents who reported emotional and/or sexual abuse prior to age 12 were twice as likely

CURRENT STATUS OF THE FUKUSHIMA HEALTH MANAGEMENT SURVEY.

The Fukushima Health Management Survey (FHMS) was implemented in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. The primary purpose of this survey was to monitor the long-term health of residents, promote their future well-being and confirm whether long-term low-dose radiation exposure affects health. The FHMS results indicated very low-radiation exposure doses among residents and that no discernible increased incidence of radiation-related health effects could be expected. However, psychological distress was found to be far greater among people in Fukushima than those in

Language of sexual violence in Haiti: perceptions of victims, community-level workers, and health care providers.

Non-partner sexual violence (NPSV), an important risk factor for HIV, is of global public health significance and understudied. The 2010 earthquake interacted syndemically with structural factors to increase sexual violence and HIV risk for women in Cité Soleil, Haiti. We used an exploratory sequential qualitative design and Grounded Theory to investigate language/terminology for NPSV, victims and perpetrators, and health effects of NPSV on victims, in four focus groups: Health care providers (HCPs) (n=3; n=8), community advocates (n=8), and victims (n=8). Crucial differences exist among stake

Gravity-dependent rate sensitivity in granular intrusion: microgravity experiments and simulations.

Understanding the shear and intrusion rheological behavior of granular materials under reduced gravitational conditions is crucial for applications in planetary exploration and submarine earthquake engineering. To this end, it is important to understand whether gravity affects the drag forces on objects intruding granular media and, if so, quantify these effects. We have studied this issue experimentally in 1 g and 0 g conditions, the latter using the Beijing Drop Tower. Measuring the resistive forces on a cylinder moving at a constant speed through a granular bed, we find that gravity plays a

From Distributed Damage to Strain Localization in Rocks during Brittle Creep.

The transition from distributed damage to strain localization in rocks during brittle creep remains mechanistically unclear. Through uniaxial creep experiments on polystyrene plates with a preexisting closed crack, we demonstrate that low-stress creep is governed by frictional slip with shear stress redistribution rather than fracture, mediated by rate- and state-dependent friction (RSF). A finite element model of rock with randomly distributed microcracks, integrating RSF behavior with damage mechanics, reproduces the spatio-temporal evolution of microcracking during brittle creep. The simula

Factors affecting the changes in body mass index among emergency workers at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.

Understanding the effects of lifestyle and radiation on health is important for the health management of disaster recovery workers. International research has demonstrated the relationship between natural disasters and diseases. The lifestyle and working conditions following the Great East Japan Earthquake potentially increased the incidence of cardiovascular disease and obesity among affected individuals. The aim of this study was to analyze the body mass index (BMI) of 1,341 emergency workers who responded to the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. The BMI of each emergenc

A split Hopkinson pressure bar for experimental investigation of dynamic pulverization under very high strain rates.

Off-fault damage or pulverized rocks found in large-scale strike-slip faults are of great interest in earthquake research. In order to experimentally investigate rock pulverization, we developed a split Hopkinson pressure bar with compact dimensions and high-speed imaging. The developed experimental setup is capable of generating very high strain rates up to 1320 s-1 with the satisfaction of stress equilibrium, which are essential to reproduce the dynamic pulverization observed in nature and obtain dynamic stress-strain responses accurately. High-speed imaging revealed that cracks initiate and

Residential district multi-hazard risk is associated with childhood undernutrition: evidence from Bangladesh.

Child undernutrition and natural disasters are major public health concerns in Bangladesh, but research into their relationship is lacking. This study assessed the association between residential district multi-hazard-risk and undernutrition among children aged less than 5 years (under-5) in Bangladesh. Data for 22,055 under-5 children were extracted from the 2019 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey of Bangladesh. Multi-hazard risk was categorized as low (score<10), moderate (score 10-20), and high (score>20) using a combined score of four major hazards: tornado, cyclone, earthquake, and flood.

Depression and psychological trauma: an overview integrating current research and specific evidence of studies in the treatment of depression in public mental health services in chile.

In the last two decades, different research has demonstrated the high prevalence of childhood trauma, including sexual abuse, among depressive women. These findings are associated with a complex, severe, and chronic psychopathology. This can be explained considering the neurobiological changes secondary to early trauma that can provoke a neuroendocrine failure to compensate in response to challenge. It suggests the existence of a distinguishable clinical-neurobiological subtype of depression as a function of childhood trauma that requires specific treatments. Among women with depression and ea

Arthur Neve (1859-1919) and a Mission Hospital in Srinagar, Kashmir.

Mark Harrison has said that hospitals occupy a central place within health-care systems, not only on account of their curative functions but also as centres of teaching and research. The indigenous system of medicine practised by Hakims in Kashmir is the Unani. The Mission Hospital in Srinagar, Kashmir became the most important hospital attracting patients, not only within Kashmir but also in the surrounding countries and not only because of the curative facilities provided at the hospital but also because of the humane approach of its physicians, outstanding among them being Arthur Neve. A satellite infrastructure for health early warning in post-disaster health management.

The risk of epidemics and emerging or re-emerging diseases such as avian flu, tuberculosis, malaria and other vector-borne diseases, is rising. These risks can be contained with prevention, early warning, and prompt management. Despite progress in information technology, communication is still a bottleneck for health early warning and response systems in post-disaster situations. This paper presents Satellites for Epidemiology (SAFE), a component-based interoperable architecture for health early warning that employs satellite, radio, and wireless networks, geographic information systems, integ

Integrating digital risk communication and indigenous knowledge in megathrust mitigation in Sukabumi Regency.

UNLABELLED: Indonesia's southern Java coast faces a substantial threat from megathrust earthquakes and near-field tsunamis, where warning times are limited, and community preparedness remains uneven. This study examines how integrating digital communication tools with local and indigenous knowledge can strengthen disaster risk communication and enhance preparedness in high-risk coastal communities. Using a convergent mixed-methods design with a participatory orientation, fieldwork was conducted in Sukatani and Karangpapak Villages, Sukabumi Regency, West Java, between July 2024 and August 2024…

Paraborg: Paramedic Cyborg Insects for In Situ Emergency Drug-Delivery.

Over the past two decades, cyborg insects have emerged as a promising alternative to artificial insect-scale mobile robots, owing to their low power consumption, resilient biological bodies with naturally integrated sensors, agile locomotion, and self-adaptability. However, most studies have focused primarily on autonomous control and hardware integration for search-oriented urban search-and-rescue operations following natural disasters such as earthquakes. This raises a crucial next-step challenge: beyond locating survivors, what life-saving interventions can cyborg insects perform? Here, we …
