Prevalence of intestinal protozoa infection among school-aged children on Pemba Island, Tanzania, and effect of single-dose albendazole, nitazoxanide and albendazole-nitazoxanide.

BACKGROUND: Pathogenic intestinal protozoa infections are common in school-aged children in the developing world and they are frequently ass … ren were diagnosed with at least one of the (potentially) pathogenic protozoa Giardia intestinalis, Entamoeba histolytica/E. dispar and Blastocystis hominis. Observed CRs were high for all treatment arms, including placebo. Nitazoxanide showed a significant effect compared to placebo against the non-pathogenic protozoon Entamoeba coli. CONCLUSIONS: Intesti …

Results of testing for intestinal parasites by state diagnostic laboratories, United States, 1987.

We analyzed results of 216,275 stool specimens examined by the state diagnostic laboratories in 1987; parasites were found in 20.1%. Percentages were highest for protozoans: Giardia lamblia (7.2%), Entamoeba coli and Endolimax nana (4.2% each), Blastocystis hominis (2.6%), Entamoeba histolytica (0.9%), and Cryptosporidium species (0.2%). Identifications of Giardia lamblia increased broadly from the 4.0% average found in 1979, with 40 states reporting increases and seven decreases. Most states that identified Giardia in more than 9% of specimens were located around the Great Lakes or in the Nor…

Intestinal infections in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. A prospective study in 132 patients.

We studied prospectively 132 patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome to define the spectrum of enteric pathogens during this disease, with special reference to the correlation between the lesions, the infections, and the symptoms. Forty-four percent of the patients harbored at least one enteric pathogen: the most frequently recovered were Cryptosporidium (28), cytomegalovirus (16), Entamoeba histolytica (13), Giardia lamblia (9), and Mycobacterium avium intracellulare (7). Patients harboring pathogens were more likely to be diarrheics (69%) than patients without a pathogen (38%; P = 0…

Amebic liver abscess.

Amebic liver abscess is the most common extraintestinal manifestation of infection with Entamoeba histolytica, and it is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. In this article the most recent available information is reviewed relating to epidemiology, pathogenesis, presentation, diagnosis, and treatment. We reviewed thousands of cases of amebic liver abscess in the medical literature and present that information as it pertains to mortality, gender, anatomic location of abscesses, and clinical signs and symptoms.

Methods for cultivation of luminal parasitic protists of clinical importance.

Cultivation of luminal protistan parasites has a long history. In this review we discuss the methods and media that are most widely used for the establishment and maintenance of the following organisms in culture: Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia intestinalis, Trichomonas vaginalis, Dientamoeba fragilis, Blastocystis hominis, and Balantidium coli. While cultivation is of limited importance in the diagnostic laboratory, it is essential to most research laboratories, and it is toward the latter that this review is primarily aimed.

A new autochthonous case of amebiasis in Italy in a patient without risk factors: an alert for clinicians and laboratorians.

We describe a rare case of intestinal amebiasis of unknown source, in an immunocompetent patient with no risk factors. The detection of an autochthonous Entamoeba histolytica strain causing ulcerative colitis (UC) in a healthy individual was unexpected, but it was the second time it had occurred in Italy in a few months therefore, it highlighted the urgency to establish a new approach in the diagnosis of UC and more generally in the diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease, involving routine parasitological investigation even in a non-endemic area.

[Diagnostic certainty in intestinal amebiasis in Managua].

Three surveys were carried out in Managua. Nicaragua. In the first one it was found that 71% of the intestinal amebiasis cases of obligatory notification had no comparable diagnostic foundations; in the second one, 11.7% of the laboratory diagnoses as Entamoeba histolytica referred by 4 health centers were correct; and in the third one, it was obvious that only 9.4% of the doctors knew well what intestinal amebiasis is. The results suggest that intestinal amebiasis is being diagnosed excessively in Managua.

Cutaneous amebiasis.

An infant with cutaneous amebiasis of the vulva and amebic liver abscess is described. Epidemiologic investigations and serologic studies were crucial in establishing the diagnosis. The vulvar amebic ulcers responded dramatically to metronidazole therapy. Cutaneous amebiasis is a rare complication of Entamoeba histolytica infection which should be considered in the differential diagnosis of perineovulvar or penile ulcers. Cutaneous amebiasis may also occur on the abdominal wall surrounding a draining hepatic abscess, colostomy site, or laparotomy incision.

Hepatic amoebiasis in immunodepressed mice.

The effects of immunodepression on intestinal amoebic lesions produced by Entamoeba histolytica were studied in inbred mice of the C3H/mg strain. Immunodepression was induced in two ways by giving (i) cyclophosphamide and (ii) anti-mouse lymphocyte serum. On immunodepression with the latter, although there was no difference in the degree of macroscopic intestinal damage, all five surviving immunodepressed mice showed hepatic lesions. It is noted that these had a striking histological resemblance to human and hamster lesions in hepatic amoebiasis.

Are immunoenzymatic tests for intestinal protozoans reliable when used on archaeological material?

Intestinal protozoans found in ancient human samples have been studied primarily by microscopy and immunodiagnostic assays. However, such methods are not suitable for the detection of zoonotic genotypes. The objectives of the present study were to utilize immunoenzimatic assays for coproantigen detection of Cryptosporidium sp., Giardia duodenalis, and Entamoeba histolytica/Entamoeba dispar in sixty ancient human and animal samples collected from 14 archaeological sites in South America, and to carry out a critical analysis of G. duodenalis according to results obtained from three diagnostic me…

[A parasitologic survey conducted in Touraine (France) in a group of South East Asia refugees (author's transl)].

Forty refugees (23 from 5 lao families and 17 from 3 cambodian families) previously and routinely treated against intestinal parasites, underwent stools and serum controls: 77 p. 100 had still intestinal parasites but 61 p. 100 had a normal blood cells count without hypereosinophilia. The parasites so detected were: Clonorchis sinensis, Heterophyes heterophyes, Trichuris trichiura, Necator americanus, Strongyloides stercoralis, Giardia intestinals and Entamoeba coli.

Aspects of Genetic Diversity, Host Specificity and Public Health Significance of Single-Celled Intestinal Parasites Commonly Observed in Humans and Mostly Referred to as 'Non-Pathogenic'.

Clinical microbiology involves the detection and differentiation of primarily bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi in patients with infections. Billions of people may be colonised by one or more species of common luminal intestinal parasitic protists (CLIPPs) that are often detected in clinical microbiology laboratories; still, our knowledge on these organisms' impact on global health is very limited. The genera Blastocystis, Dientamoeba, Entamoeba, Endolimax and Iodamoeba comprise CLIPPs species, the life cycles of which, as opposed to single-celled pathogenic intestinal parasites (e.g., mi…

Prevalence of intestinal helminths and protozoans in a rural population segment of the Dominican Republic.

There are few reports of parasitic disease prevalence in the Dominican Republic. The most recent study was that by Mackie et al. (1951). Examination of purged specimens from individuals employed by two sugar plantations demonstrated generally high prevalences of a number of helminths and protozoans. We report here the findings of a prevalence study using a population sample of 453 individuals. Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, hookworm, Enterobius vermicularis, Giardia lamblia and Entamoeba coli were found.

Amebic Liver abscess Complicated by Inferior Vena Cava Thrombosis: A Case Report.

Amebic liver abscess is the most common extraintestinal manifestation of infection with Entamoeba histolytica. It is a common disease, especially in endemic areas, but it is a rare cause of inferior vena cava (IVC) obstruction, with only a few cases appearing in the literature. The authors describe a case of amebic liver abscess in a patient who developed a rare vascular complication of inferior vena cava thrombosis. The case responded to conservative treatment and radiological intervention.

Human milk kills parasitic intestinal protozoa.

Giardia lamblia, a common pathogenic intestinal parasite of humans, was rapidly killed by exposure to normal human milk in vitro. The killing did not depend on secretory immunoglobulin A. Entamoeba histolytica, the dysentery amoeba, was also killed by normal human milk. Giardia-cidal activity cochromatographed with an unusual lipase that is present in the milk of humans but not of lower mammals. Human milk may play a protective role in infants exposed to this parasite.
