Mitigating Multiple Sources of Bias in a Quasi-Experimental Integrative Data Analysis: Does Treating Childhood Anxiety Prevent Substance Use Disorders in Late Adolescence/Young Adulthood?

Psychiatric epidemiologists, developmental psychopathologists, prevention scientists, and treatment researchers have long speculated that treating child anxiety disorders could prevent alcohol and other drug use disorders in young adulthood. A primary challenge in examining long-term effects of anxiety disorder treatment from randomized controlled trials is that all participants receive an immediate or delayed study-related treatment prior to long-term follow-up assessment. Thus, if a long-term follow-up is conducted, a comparison condition no longer exists within the trial. Quasi-experimental

Analyzing inherent biases in SARS-CoV-2 PCR and serological epidemiologic metrics.

BACKGROUND: Prospective observational data show that infected persons with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) remain polymerase chain reaction (PCR) positive for a prolonged duration, and that detectable antibodies develop slowly with time. We aimed to analyze how these effects can bias key epidemiological metrics used to track and monitor SARS-CoV-2 epidemics. METHODS: An age-structured mathematical model was constructed to simulate progression of SARS-CoV-2 epidemics in populations. PCR testing to diagnose infection and cross-sectional surveys to measure seropr

The threat of meningococcal disease during the Hajj and Umrah mass gatherings: A comprehensive review.

The Hajj and Umrah mass gatherings represent many of the risk factors for meningococcal disease and have historically been associated with both local and international outbreaks of the disease. The implementation of strict preventative measures including mandatory meningococcal vaccination with the quadrivalent (A,C,Y,W) vaccine has prevented pilgrimage-associated meningococcal outbreaks and significantly reduced the incidence of the disease at these events. However, meningococcal disease remains an important public health threat at the Hajj and Umrah due in part to the evolving nature of the

Up-regulation of endothelial nitric oxide activity as a central strategy for prevention of ischemic stroke - just say NO to stroke!

Nitric oxide (NO) produced by the endothelium of cerebral arterioles is an important mediator of endothelium-dependent vasodilation (EDV), and also helps to prevent thrombosis and vascular remodeling. A number of risk factors for ischemic stroke are associated with impaired EDV, and this defect is usually at least partially attributable to a decrease in the production and/or stability of NO. These risk factors include hypertension, high-sodium diets, homocysteine, diabetes, visceral obesity, and aging. Conversely, many measures which may provide protection from ischemic stroke - such as ample

alpha-1-Microglobulin: epidemiological indicator for tubular dysfunction induced by cadmium?

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the suitability of alpha-1-microglobulin as a marker for cadmium induced renal dysfunction. METHODS: alpha-1-Microglobulin was studied in a cross sectional survey in relation to the body burden of cadmium. Concentrations of alpha-1-microglobulin in 24 h urine of 831 people aged 2-87 years were analysed in association with urinary cadmium excretion, cadmium blood concentration, age, sex, occupational and smoking history, and estimated creatinine clearance. Participants came from a population residentially exposed to cadmium and from two control populations matched for s

The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Clinical and Epidemiological Profile of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection in Bahia, Brazil: A Comparative Analysis of Pre- and Post-Pandemic Trends.

In recent years, the incidence of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) has increased due to the emergence of SARS-CoV-2. However, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic extends beyond mortality rates. Recent analyses suggest that the introduction and spread of SARS-CoV-2 have significantly affected the epidemiology of other key respiratory viruses, such as influenza virus (FLUV), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and rhinovirus (RV). These changes raise new questions about the dynamics and incidence of post-COVID-19 respiratory infections, as well as potential alterations in symptom profile

Research effort on birds' reservoir host potential for Lyme borreliosis: A systematic review and perspectives.

Zoonotic tick-borne diseases threat human and animal health. Understanding the role of hosts in the production of infected ticks in an epidemiological system is essential to be able to design effective measures to reduce the exposure of humans and animals to infectious tick bites. The reservoir host potential, that is, number of infected ticks produced by a host species, depends on three components: tick production, realized reservoir competence and host density. The parameters and factors that determine the reservoir host potential need to be characterized to achieve a robust understanding of

Prevalence of chronic rhinosinusitis in the general population based on sinus radiology and symptomatology.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) measured in epidemiologic studies is 5% to 12%. This might be an overestimation because of overlap with other diseases, such as allergic rhinitis. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to calculate the prevalence of CRS using a combination of epidemiologically based CRS according to the European Position Paper on Rhinosinusitis and Nasal Polyps (EPOS) together with sinonasal opacification on imaging. METHODS: Subjects who underwent a computed tomographic or magnetic resonance imaging scan of the head for any nonrhinologic indication were asked to fill

Donor-Recipient Identification in Para- and Poly-phyletic Trees Under Alternative HIV-1 Transmission Hypotheses Using Approximate Bayesian Computation.

Diversity of the founding population of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV-1) transmissions raises many important biological, clinical, and epidemiological issues. In up to 40% of sexual infections, there is clear evidence for multiple founding variants, which can influence the efficacy of putative prevention methods, and the reconstruction of epidemiologic histories. To infer who-infected-whom, and to compute the probability of alternative transmission scenarios while explicitly taking phylogenetic uncertainty into account, we created an approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) method bas

Molecular typing methods for Neisseria meningitidis.

Neisseria meningitidis is an important pathogen because it causes life-threatening infections. The rapid course of meningococcal disease and the capacity of some serogroups to cause large-scale epidemics necessitates the use of sensitive, reliable and rapid typing methods to characterise strains. Molecular typing techniques for N. meningitidis are used for epidemiological purposes to investigate outbreaks and the spread of organisms and to examine the population genetic structure of the organism to understand better its variation and evolution. Many investigators have employed molecular typing

Cutaneous leishmaniasis in Algeria: quadrennial assessment (2008-2011).

To study the prevalence and epidemiological factors of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Algeria from 2008 through 2011. The endemic site of M'Sila is the most important in Algeria after the historic site of Biskra, but the disease has spread rapidly and created new and important sites of infection, including Batna, Bechar, El Oued and Ghardaïa. The increased number of cases and the spread of this zoonosis require increased surveillance of its evolution and the application of adequate control measures.

Mumps prevention.

This revised Immunization Practices Advisory Committee (ACIP) recommendation on mumps vaccine updates the 1982 recommendation (1). Changes include: a discussion of the evolving epidemiologic characteristics of mumps, introduction of a cutoff of 1957 as the oldest birth cohort for which mumps vaccination is routinely recommended, and more aggressive outbreak-control measures. Although there are no major changes in vaccination strategy, these revised recommendations place a greater emphasis on vaccinating susceptible adolescents and young adults.

[Human leptospirosis in New Caledonia and dependencies. Apropos of 57 cases observed between 1 June 1983 and 31 May 1985].

57 cases of leptospirosis were diagnosed in New Caledonia (South Pacific French Territory) between June 1983 and May 1985. 25% cases are severe infections; thrombopenia and renal failure are frequently observed. Leptospires are found in blood or spinal or urine culture confirmed by haemagglutination tests on microplates (Martin et Petit). Epidemiological studies are being performed during 1985-1986 to devise preventive measures adapted to the territory.

Epidemiological evaluation of rare side-effects of mild analgesics.

1 Major adverse reactions to mild analgesics, unless these drugs are abused or taken in high doses, are believed to be rare. 2 However, because of the massive and universal use of these drugs, quantitative measurement of the risk involved is imperative. At present, contradictory regulatory decisions about the use of mild analgesics are based on circumstantial evidence. 3 It is only by the conduct of epidemiological studies that data leading to decisions based on scientifically sound judgments may be obtained.

Prevalence of ankylosing spondylitis and HLA-B27 in a North American Indian population: a pilot study.

The value of an epidemiologic approach to the diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis was assessed in a pilot study of an Amerind population. In 103 adult volunteers aged 20 to 42 years on a Cree reservation lumbar flexion and chest expansion were measured and HLA typing was performed on peripheral blood lymphocytes. Of the 14 subjects with HLA-B27, 2 had radiologic evidence of sacroiliitis but none could be said to have definite ankylosing spondylitis on clinical grounds.

Associations of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use with periodontal disease in postmenopausal women: The OsteoPerio study.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease is characterized in part by a host immune-inflammatory response that releases proteolytic enzymes, which damage periodontal tissue. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) modulate host immune-inflammatory responses. We investigated cross-sectional and prospective relationships between NSAID use and indicators of periodontal disease, for which there is limited epidemiologic evidence. METHODS: Data were from the Buffalo OsteoPerio Study of 1342 postmenopausal women ages 53-81 years. Periodontal assessments included measurements of alveolar crestal height (
