Maximum hand-rung coupling forces in children: the effects of handhold diameter.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the effect of handhold size (diameter) on the maximum breakaway strength between a hand and handhold for children. BACKGROUND: Falls from playground equipment are a major cause of childhood injury and death. It is unclear if recommendations for handholds on playground equipment are too broad. METHODS: Breakaway strength was defined as the maximum quasistatic force that can be exerted on a grasped object before the object is forcibly pulled from the grasp. Hand anthropometry, grip, and breakaway strengths were measured for 397 children between the ages of 6 and 11 years

THE HENNEPIN DOUBLE-TUBE TECHNIQUE: A MORE EFFICIENT METHOD OF TRACHEAL INTUBATION THROUGH THE LMA FASTRACH.

BACKGROUND: The LMA Fastrach (LMA North America, Inc; hereafter termed the intubating laryngeal mask airway [ILMA]) is an extraglottic device designed to facilitate endotracheal intubation. After the endotracheal tube is placed through the lumen of the ILMA into the trachea, the ILMA is removed, using a proprietary stabilizer rod to hold the tube in place. DISCUSSION: The traditional method of ILMA removal is not optimized for the critically ill patient. It requires the use of unfamiliar equipment, exposes the patient to a significant period without ventilation, and risks tube dislodgement. W

Effects of electrocautery on transvenous lead insulation materials.

INTRODUCTION: Insulation defects are a leading cause of transvenous lead failure. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of electrocautery on transvenous lead insulation materials. METHODS: A preparation was done to simulate dissection of a transvenous lead from tissues. Radiofrequency energy was delivered using a standard cautery blade at outputs of 10, 20, and 30 W, for 3 and 6 seconds, using parallel and perpendicular blade orientations on leads with outermost insulations of silicone rubber, polyurethane, and silicone-polyurethane copolymer. Damage to each lead segment was

Simple and rapid fabrication of disposable carbon-based electrochemical cells using an electronic craft cutter for sensor and biosensor applications.

This work describes the construction of an all-plastic disposable carbon-based electrochemical cell (DCell) using a simple procedure based on the use of a home cutter printer for prototyping and laminating. The cutter printer and adhesive vinyl films were used to produce three electrodes in an electrochemical cell layout, and a laminating process was then used to define the geometric area and insulate the electrodes. The DCell showed excellent performance in several applications including the determination of toxic metals in water samples, the immobilization of DNA and the detection of Salmone

Biomechanical analysis of occupant kinematics in rollover motor vehicle accidents: dynamic spit test.

A better understanding of occupant kinematics in rollover accidents helps to advance biomechanical knowledge and to enhance the safety features of motor vehicles. While many rollover accident simulation studies have adopted the static approach to delineate the occupant kinematics in rollover accidents, very few studies have attempted the dynamic approach. The present work was designed to study the biomechanics of restrained occupants during rollover accidents using the steady-state dynamic spit test and to address the importance of keeping the lap belt fastened. Experimental tests were conduct

An evaluation of the characteristics and performance of neonatal phototherapy equipment.

This paper reviews the current state of knowledge and practice in neonatal phototherapy, and assesses methods of evaluating the characteristics and performance of different equipment. Artificial lighting (usually fluorescent) has been used for the past 30 years in the treatment of neonatal jaundice. Widely differing light outputs and spectra are used, making comparison and evaluation difficult for clinicians. Manufacturers of neonatal phototherapy equipment have no standard for assessing the performance of their equipment, and information that is supplied is at best confusing or deceptive to t
