The nerve to the mylohyoid as a donor for facial nerve reanimation procedures: a cadaveric feasibility study.

OBJECT: Facial nerve injury with resultant facial muscle paralysis is disfiguring and disabling. Reanimation of the facial nerve has been performed using different regional nerves. The nerve to the mylohyoid has not been previously explored as a donor nerve for facial nerve reanimation procedures. METHODS: Five fresh adult human cadavers (10 sides) were dissected to identify an additional nerve donor candidate for facial nerve neurotization. Using a curvilinear cervicofacial skin incision, the nerve to the mylohyoid and facial nerve were identified. The nerve to the mylohyoid was transected a

Prevalence and pattern of maxillofacial injuries and treatment outcome after bear attacks in Jharkhand population.

INTRODUCTION: Sloth bear, a native species of Indian subcontinent, has a population estimate of 1200-1500 in Jharkhand. Human habitats in proximity to forest reserve cause frequent human-bear interactions and thus bear attack injuries. Face is the most common site affected. This is a prospective study performed to evaluate the incidence and pattern of maxillofacial trauma after bear attack and the outcome of the treatment provided to them. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with bear attack injuries reporting to the outpatient department were recruited for the study. The incidence was recorded i

The injury pattern in fatal suicidal falls from a height: an examination of 307 cases.

Falls from a height are a common cause of suicidal death in urban settings. The aim of the present work is to describe and discuss a specific set of 307 autopsies performed in a metropolitan city such as Milan, Italy from 2006 to 2011, with a special focus on the relationship between the injury pattern and height of the fall, age at death and weight at death. The rib cage (92%), the lungs (76%), the heart (53%) and the liver (58%) turned out to be the most injured structures in the whole population. Age resulted statistically significant for heart, thoracic aorta, mesentery, kidney hilus, hip

Management of comminuted but continuous mandible defects after gunshot injuries.

INTRODUCTION: Firearm injuries continue as a major public health problem, contributing significant morbidity, mortality, and expense to our society. There are four main steps in the management of patients with gunshot wounds to the face: securing an airway, controlling haemorrhage, identifying other injuries and definitive repair of the traumatic facial deformities. The objective of this study was to determine late outcome of two treatment options by open reduction and internal fixation versus closed reduction and maxillomandibular fixation (MMF) in the treatment of gunshot injuries of the man

Anatomical validation of safe zones for facial nerve preservation in supraorbital keyhole approach: a cadaveric study.

PURPOSE: The supraorbital keyhole approach is a minimally invasive technique for treating lesions in the anterior and middle cranial fossa. A major complication of this procedure is injury to the temporal branch of the facial nerve. This study aimed to define safe surgical zones for the lateral borders of the incision to minimize facial nerve injuries. METHODS: This study examined 15 formalin-fixed adult cadaveric heads (30 sides). The temporal branches of the facial nerve were dissected using a surgical microscope. Three distances were measured using anatomical landmarks: (M1) horizontal dis

Potential Therapeutic Strategies and Substances for Facial Nerve Regeneration Based on Preclinical Studies.

Despite advances in microsurgical technology and an improved understanding of nerve regeneration, obtaining satisfactory results after facial nerve injury remains a difficult clinical problem. Among existing peripheral nerve regeneration studies, relatively few have focused on the facial nerve, particularly how experimental studies of the facial nerve using animal models play an essential role in understanding functional outcomes and how such studies can lead to improved axon regeneration after nerve injury. The purpose of this article is to review current perspectives on strategies for applyi

Estrogen receptor expression in the facial nucleus of adult hamsters: does axotomy recapitulate development?

Testosterone propionate (TP) augments hamster facial motoneuron regeneration following axonal injury by an androgen-mediated mechanism. Although many of the trophic properties of TP are androgenic, TP can be metabolized to estradiol (E). We have recently shown that E administered in supraphysiological doses can also enhance facial nerve regeneration. The mechanism by which E alters nerve regeneration is unknown. The recent discovery of transient estrogen receptor (ER) expression in the developing rat facial motor nucleus (FMN), coupled with the concept that regeneration may recapitulate develo

[Injury profile in modern competitive karate--analysis of 1999 WKC-Karate World Championship Games in Bochum].

Competitions in Karate are either carried out as Shobu sanbon (with fist padding) or Shobu Ippon (without fist padding). Aim of this study was to gain current data on injuries in modern competitive Karate and to compare the two different competitive systems. During the WKC-Karate-World-Championships held from June 12-13 1999 at Bochum, 392 bouts were carried out. Every injury that was seen by the tournament doctor was registered. 142 competitors sustained 168 injuries: 141 mostly minor contusions of the head and throat, 12 facial lacerations, 3 knock-outs (mild brain injury), 3 thoracal contus

Screening of Pediatric Facial Fractures by Brain Computed Tomography: Diagnostic Performance Comparison With Facial Computed Tomography.

OBJECTIVES: Facial bone fractures secondary to head trauma are more common in children than in adults. Recently, multidetector row computed tomography (CT) has been considered superior to conventional radiography. Some studies have reported that facial soft tissue injuries require both facial and brain CT and that brain CT is helpful in screening facial bone fractures. However, these studies included only adult patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of brain CT and the need for additional facial CT to detect facial bone fractures in emergency pediatrics. ME

Recent advances in the management of oral and maxillofacial trauma.

This review summarises recently published papers on maxillofacial trauma in 2 widely read journals: the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (BJOMS) and the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (IJOMS). Since a large proportion of the injuries seen in oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) departments are fractures of the facial skeleton, we primarily focus on their assessment and treatment, but also cover problems that affect the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) (including ankylosis), military injuries, polytrauma, and the use of perioperative drugs. Between 2012 a

Management of acute nasal fractures.

In cases of facial trauma, nasal fractures account for approximately 40 percent of bone injuries. Treatment in the primary care setting begins with evaluating the injury, taking an accurate history of the situation in which the injury occurred, and ascertaining how the face and nose appeared and functioned before the injury occurred. Serious injuries should be treated, then nasal inspection and palpation may be performed to assess for airway patency, mucosal laceration, and septal deformity. A thorough examination of the nose and surrounding structures, including the orbits, mandible, and cerv

Risk factors contributing to symptomatic plate removal in maxillofacial trauma patients.

This study analyzed the fate of plates used to correct maxillofacial injuries and defined risk factors that eventually resulted in plate removal. The outpatient clinic files of 108 patients treated with rigid internal fixation after maxillofacial trauma were reviewed. Study variables included age, sex, trauma circumstances, diagnosis, type of fracture, approach to the facial skeleton, presence of teeth in the line of fracture, plate material, site of plates, and reasons for plate removal. Of 204 plates used for fixation, 44 plates (22 percent) were removed. When all factors were considered tog…

Diagnostic Value of Preoperative Electrodiagnostic Analysis in a Patient with Facial Palsy and a Large Vestibular Schwannoma: Case Report.

Although radiologic methods confirm the diagnosis of patients with large vestibular schwannomas, these methods usually indicate only the size of the tumor and its possible nerve compression. Electrodiagnostic methods can reveal the functional state of the nerves, particularly the trigeminal and facial nerves, as well as providing a basis for objectively evaluating nerve injury. Due to the lack of an established objective evaluation method, electrodiagnostic methods were utilized to assess injury to the cranial nerve in a patient with a large vestibular schwannoma. A 79-year-old woman presented
