Psychosocial adaptation of 39 adolescents with sex chromosome abnormalities.

OBJECTIVES: Children with sex chromosome abnormalities (SCA) are known to be at increased risk for neuromotor, language, learning, and behavioral problems, but little is known of psychosocial adaptation of SCA adolescents. This study was conducted to evaluate psychologic characteristics of unselected SCA adolescents, including socialization, educational progress, separation from family, and incidence and severity of psychiatric disturbance. METHODS: Thirty-nine propositi identified through the screening of 40,000 consecutive Denver newborns, including boys with 47,XXY karyotypes and girls wit

Impact of War and Resettlement on Vietnamese Families Facing Dementia: A Qualitative Study.

OBJECTIVES: Most Vietnamese immigrants in the U.S. today arrived as political refugees due to the Vietnam War in the late 20th century. Refugees are disproportionally affected by health and mental health disparities as a result of experiencing distress and potentially traumatic experiences before, during, and after their migration processes. This study involved Vietnamese families facing dementia and used a qualitative approach to investigate participants' experiences before, during, and right after their resettlement in the U.S. METHODS: In-person interviews were conducted with 11 Vietnamese

Son preference and sterilisation use among young married women in two slums in Bengaluru city, India.

This paper explores the ways in which women's sterilisation decisions are influenced by the combination of a preference for male children and a desire for smaller family size among young married women in two urban slums in Bengaluru, India. While both son preference and an emphasis on sterilisation are well-known demographic characteristics of most South Asian countries, relatively little research has been conducted that links the two. We take advantage of a longitudinal survey of 416 unsterilised married women aged 16-25 to explore how having sons and the number of children influence a woman'

Predicting delayed letter knowledge development and its relation to grade 1 reading achievement among children with and without familial risk for dyslexia.

The authors examined the developmental trajectories of children's early letter knowledge in relation to measures spanning and encompassing their prior language-related and cognitive measures and environmental factors and their subsequent Grade 1 reading achievement. Letter knowledge was assessed longitudinally at ages 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, and 6.5 years; earlier language skills and environmental factors were assessed at ages 3.5 and 4.5 years; and reading achievement was assessed at the beginning and end of Grade 1. The analyses were conducted on a longitudinal data set involving children with and wi

Three potential susceptibility loci shown by a genome-wide scan for regions influencing the age at onset of mania.

OBJECTIVE: The age at onset of bipolar disorder is associated with clinical features of the illness, including duration, severity, and pattern of comorbidity with other disorders. Age at onset is familial and heritable, and it correlates inversely with the prevalence of bipolar disorder among relatives. Because age at onset may have utility in resolving the complexity and heterogeneity of the disorder, the authors sought to identify chromosomal loci that harbor the genes influencing this trait. METHOD: A genome scan of 539 genotyped people in 97 families ascertained for the NIMH Bipolar Disor

Hailey-Hailey disease: molecular and clinical characterization of novel mutations in the ATP2C1 gene.

Hailey-Hailey disease is an autosomal dominant skin disorder characterized by suprabasal cell separation (acantholysis) of the epidermis. Mutations in ATP2C1, the gene encoding a novel, P-type Ca2+-transport ATPase, were recently found to cause Hailey-Hailey disease. In this study, we used conformation-sensitive gel electrophoresis to screen all 28 translated exons of ATP2C1 in 24 Hailey-Hailey disease families and three sporadic cases with the disorder. We identified 22 different mutations, 18 of which have not previously been reported, in 25 probands. The novel mutations comprise three nonse

[A case of familial Bardet-Biedl syndrome (obesity, slight mental retardation, polydactyly, retinitis pigmentosum and renal failure) with insulin-resistant diabetes mellitus].

A case of familial Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) in a 64-year-old woman is presented; it is characterized by abdominal obesity (BMI: 38.28; WHR: 0.98), slight mental retardation, polydactyly, pigmentary retinopathy and moderate renal failure, with insulin-resistant diabetes mellitus and severe inflammation of the left limb with necrosis of the last toe (the sixth) of the left foot. Four brothers and sisters of the patient presented the same syndrome. The patient had had healthy offsprings. The review of current literature indicates that BBS is a genetic autosomal recessive disease, formerly grou

FAMIly Physical Activity, Sedentary behaviour and Sleep (FAMIPASS) study: protocol for a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: The development of children's healthy and active lifestyles, including habit formation for optimal 24-hour movement behaviour, is associated with their family environment. A whole-family study collecting comprehensive data that can evaluate family lifestyle behaviours in different settings in depth has the potential to provide the evidence-based information needed for national guidelines, for designing interventions and for supporting policy-makers' decisions. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The FAMIly Physical Activity, Sedentary behaviour and Sleep (FAMIPASS) study is a nationally repre

Increased Risk of Hereditary Prostate Cancer in Italian Families with Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Syndrome Harboring Mutations in BRCA and in Other Susceptibility Genes.

Hereditary prostate cancer (HPCa) has the highest heritability of any cancer in men. Interestingly, it occurs in several hereditary syndromes, including breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) and Lynch syndrome (LS). Several gene mutations related to these syndromes have been identified as biomarkers in HPCa. The goal of this study was to screen for germline mutations in susceptibility genes by using a multigene panel, and to subsequently correlate the results with clinical and laboratory parameters. This was undertaken in 180 HBOC families, which included 217 males with prostate cancer (PCa). Mutat

Family history of prostate cancer and the incidence of ERG- and phosphatase and tensin homolog-defined prostate cancer.

Family history is among the strongest known risk factors for prostate cancer (PCa). Emerging data suggest molecular subtypes of PCa, including two somatic genetic aberrations: fusions of androgen-regulated promoters with ERG and, separately, phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) loss. We examined associations between family history and incidence of these subtypes in 44,126 men from the prospective Health Professionals Follow-up Study. ERG and PTEN status were assessed by immunohistochemistry. Multivariable competing risks models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence inter

Genetic heterogeneity of X-linked mental retardation with fragile X. Association of tight linkage to factor IX and incomplete penetrance in males.

X-linked mental retardation with fragile X or Martin-Bell Syndrome (MBS) is a frequent cause of mental retardation. So far segregation analysis of MBS in pedigrees ascertained by different, incomplete criteria has produced results, difficult to interpret, which suggest genetic complexity (Sherman et al. 1985). Biochemical and cell biological studies have failed to provide an assay for genetic heterogeneity in MBS and linkage analysis is the only available method. Such analysis, however, is complicated by the incomplete penetrance of the disease in males and the variable penetrance and expressi

Schizophrenia: the illness that made us human.

Any hypotheses concerning the origins of humans must explain many things. Among these are: 1, the growth in brain size around two million years ago; 2, the presence of subcutaneous fat; 3, the near absence of change or cultural progress for around 2 million years after the brain grew in size; 4, the cultural explosion which began somewhere between fifty thousand and one hundred thousand years ago with the emergence of art, music, religion and warfare; 5, the further cultural explosion around ten thousand to fifteen thousand years ago which developed with the emergence of agriculture and which

Freedom to Ride, Responsibility to Insure: Florida's Motorcycle Trauma Coverage Gap When Private Risk Produces Publicly Financed Rescue.

Florida's motorcycle insurance framework can separate individual risk-taking from the financing of catastrophic trauma care. When meaningful first-party medical coverage is absent or inadequate, unreimbursed costs may be shifted to hospitals, physicians, public programs, insured families, and taxpayers. This editorial argues that the resulting arrangement can function as an implicit subsidy of a privately chosen motor-vehicle risk and reviews historical Florida and contemporary out-of-state evidence describing that potential burden. Because the current statewide magnitude, payer distribution,

TAMOF-1 as a Versatile and Predictable Chiral Stationary Phase for the Resolution of Racemic Mixtures.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become promising materials for multiple applications due to their controlled dimensionality and tunable properties. The incorporation of chirality into their frameworks opens new strategies for chiral separation, a key technology in the pharmaceutical industry as each enantiomer of a racemic drug must be isolated. Here, we describe the use of a combination of computational modeling and experiments to demonstrate that high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) columns packed with TAMOF-1 as the chiral stationary phase are efficient, versatile, robust, and

The phylogenetic position of Serratia, Buttiauxella and some other genera of the family Enterobacteriaceae.

The phylogenetic relationships of the type strains of 38 species from 15 genera of the family Enterobacteriaceae were investigated by comparative 16S rDNA analysis. Several sequences of strains from the genera Citrobacter, Erwinia, Pantoea, Proteus, Rahnella and Serratia, analysed in this study, have been analysed previously. However, as the sequences of this study differ slightly from the published ones, they were included in the analysis. Of the 23 enterobacterial genera included in an overview dendrogram of relatedness, members of the genera Xenorhabdus, Photorhabdus, Proteus and Plesiomona

Exploring the effects of COVID-19 on family planning: results from a qualitative study in rural Uganda following COVID-19 lockdown.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has likely affected the already high unmet need for family planning in low- and middle-income countries. This qualitative study used Andersen's Behavioral Model of Health Service Use as a theoretical framework to explore the possible ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic, including the impact of a 3-month government mandated lockdown, might affect family planning outcomes in rural Uganda. A secondary aim was to elicit recommendations to improve family planning service delivery in the context of COVID-19. METHODS: Between June and October 2020, we conducted four

Transcriptomic Downregulation of APOE, Polymorphic Variations of APOE, Diet, Social Isolation, and Co-morbidities as Contributing Factors to Alzheimer's Disease: a Case-Control Study of Kashmiri Population.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia, generally affecting elderly people in the age group of above 60-65 years. Amyloid deposition has been found to be a possible cause and a characteristic feature of Alzheimer's disease. Mutations, variant genotypes, or downregulation that reduce amyloid clearance or accelerate amyloid accumulation can lead to Alzheimer's disease. This study involved clinically confirmed AD patients, age matched controls of similar ethnicity, and patients who had no history of cancer or any other chronic disease. DNA and RNA extractions of samples were
