Using whole genome sequencing to investigate routes of transmission of Salmonella Dublin to British Columbian dairy farms.

Trade networks and cattle movement are important risk factors for infectious disease spread. As Salmonella Dublin is highly adapted to cattle, transmission between farms is thought to be strongly associated with animal movement compared to non-host-adapted Salmonella strains. This study used whole genome sequencing (WGS) to investigate routes of S. Dublin transmission in British Columbia (BC). In particular, we explore the potential contribution of US dairy cattle importation to the introduction of S. Dublin into BC, assess evidence for re-infection of farms with genetically distinct strains, …

The complete genome sequence of quail coronavirus identified in disease surveillance on quail farms in South Korea.

Avian carcasses collected from 103 flocks on 14 quail farms in Korea between 2022 and 2023 were diagnosed with viral diseases (22 flocks), bacterial disease (58 flocks), parasitic diseases (28 flocks) and non-infectious diseases (60 flocks). The only viral disease identified was viral enteritis in quails that showed pathological lesions in duodenum and appeared to be caused by quail coronavirus (QcoV) through viral metagenomics and RT-PCR assay. Two complete genomes of QCoV from samples diagnosed as viral enteritis were obtained using amplicon-based whole genome sequencing. The two QcoVs were …

Evolutionary dynamics and molecular epidemiology of H1N1 pandemic 2009 influenza A viruses across swine farms in Denmark.

Transmission of influenza A viruses (IAVs) between pigs and humans can trigger pandemics but more often cease as isolated infections without further spread in the new host species population. In Denmark, a major pig-producing country, the first two detections of human infections with swine-like IAVs were reported in 2021. These zoonotic IAVs were reassortants of the H1N1 pandemic 2009 lineage ("H1N1pdm09," H1 lineage 1A, clade 1A.3.3.2) introduced to swine farms in Denmark through humans approximately 11 years prior. However, predicting the likelihood and outcome of such IAV spillovers is chal…

Analysis of pathogenic bacteria and antimicrobial residues in bovine waste milk on dairy farms in southern Chile.

Waste milk (WM), a byproduct of dairy production, is often used as a cost-effective feed for calves, but it can contain pathogens and antimicrobial residues, which pose health risks. This study examined the microbiological quality and the presence of antimicrobial residues in WM from 36 dairy farms in southern Chile. In a cross-sectional study, WM samples were collected, and farm management data were gathered through a questionnaire. The samples were analyzed for total bacterial load, coliforms, staphylococci, streptococci/streptococci-like organisms (SSLOs), Salmonella spp., Mycobacterium avi…

South Asian Immigration to the US: From Collective Farms to High-Tech Cities Through H-1B Visas.

With origins in the conscripted labor system of nineteenth century European colonies, the South Asian diaspora began in the early twentieth. … pool their modest plots and capital into larger acreages that were competitive with the industrial farms of the Central and Imperial Valleys. Prejudice and economic competition drove laws and policies that prohibited Asian naturalization (Barred Zone Act, 1917). In 1924, the Johnson-Reed Act set quotas that barred migration from India. Unable to establ …

Biosecurity measures and effects on health performance and antibiotic use in semi-intensive broiler farms in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Effective biosecurity measures prevent the spread of pathogens, thereby reducing the need for antibiotic use on livestock farms. However, quantitative data on these practices and health outcomes in semi-intensive broiler farms in low-income settings is limited. A longitudinal study in Wakiso, Uganda, aimed to evaluate biosecurity practices, health performance, and antibiotic use in such farms. METHODS: The FarmUSE survey tool was used to collect data from 19 farms over two production cycles. A biosecurity risk assessment tool was used to quantify biosecurity. Blood samples (n = 34…
