Light is a critical environmental regulator of biological function in poultry, significantly influence on physiology, behavior, growth, production, and reproduction. Beyond its role in vision, light acts as a potent zeitgeber that synchronize circadian rhythms, and modulate neuroendocrine signaling and metabolic pathways essential for health and welfare. This review systematically evaluates current evidence on the role of modulated light environments in poultry production systems. For this purpose, comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google S

The role of wildlife in carrying and disseminating resistant and pathogenic bacteria has been established, yet data from wildlife in Peru are limited. This study evaluated the antibiotic resistance, presence of virulence genes, and clonality of E. coli isolated from wild birds from wetlands in Lima, Peru. Twenty-three isolates were obtained from 41 free-living birds (belonging to 15 bird species) through cloacal and feather swabs (n = 30) and fresh feces (n = 11) collected in 2021. Nineteen pulsotypes were identified by Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis. High resistance rates were observed for

Vitiligo is a multifactorial depigmenting disorder characterized by melanocyte loss, oxidative stress, and impaired melanogenesis. Resveratrol (RVT) exhibits potent antioxidant and cytoprotective properties; however, its topical application is limited by its poor cutaneous penetration, rapid degradation, and limited local bioavilability. To overcome these limitations, we developed a resveratrol-loaded novasomal formulation (RVT-NVS) and evaluated its physicochemical properties, in vitro release behavior, repigmentation efficacy in a 40% monobenzone (MZ)-induced vitiligo-like depigmentation mod

OBJECTIVE: Bacillus coagulans is a spore-forming probiotic known for its resilience and metabolic activity, both of which are desirable in promoting gut health and oxidative balance. Nonetheless, the beneficial effects of B. coagulans-fermented bedding (BFB) on raising native Chinese chicken breed farming remain largely unknown. This study was conducted to evaluate BFB supplementation on growth performance, meat quality and gut health in Jiuyuan Black chicken.
METHODS: A total of 120 male chicks were allocated to the control (CON, using traditional litter) and BFB groups with four replicates

Elsholtzia cypriani, a traditional medicinal and edible aromatic plant, exhibits antibacterial, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties, making it a promising plant-based feed additive and a potential alternative to antibiotics. However, there is a lack of experimental evidence from case studies. This study investigated the effects of dietary supplementation with E. cypriani on Muscovy ducks. GC-MS analysis identified geranial (45.09 %) and neral (36.29 %) as the principal constituents of E. cypriani essential oil. In vitro bioactivity tests demonstrated significant inhibitory effects aga

Medium-chain monoglycerides (MG) have been reported to affect the productive performance, gut microbiota and health of broiler chickens reared in ideal experimental conditions at home and abroad. However, the effects of MG on performance, intestinal development and gut microbiota of chickens in large-scale farms during different feed stages remain unknown. The present study was conducted on a modern farm with a total of 12,000 yellow feathered broiler chicks that were randomly allotted to 2 groups (1000 chicks/replicate, 6 replicates/group) for a 70-day trial. The control group (CON group) rec

Xylooligosaccharide (XOS) is known as a prebiotic, however, it is unknown whether XOS can directly protect against bacterial infection. This study aimed to investigate the direct inhibitory effects of XOS on Salmonella Typhimurium colonization and the inductive impairments in gut health and growth performance in broilers. We first probed the inhibitory effects of XOS on S. Typhimurium adhesion and its induction of intestinal epithelial cell (IPEC-J2) injuries. Afterward, 168 one-day-old yellow-feathered broilers were randomly divided into 3 groups (7 replicates/group): negative control (NC, re

Birds can act as successful long-distance vectors and reservoirs for numerous zoonotic bacterial, parasitic and viral pathogens, which can be a concern given the interconnectedness of animal, human and environmental health. Examples of such avian pathogens are members of the genus Chlamydia. Presently, there is a lack of research investigating chlamydial infections in Australian wild and captive birds and the subsequent risks to humans and other animals. In our current study, we investigated the prevalence and genetic diversity of chlamydial organisms infecting wild birds from Queensland and t

Among the most popular reasons that people feed wild birds is that they want to help birds. The extent to which supplemental food helps birds, however, is not well established. From spring 2011 to spring 2014, we examined how feeding of wild birds influences the health of individual birds at forested sites in central Illinois, USA. Specifically, we compared three forested sites where we provided supplemental food with three forested sites for which no supplemental food was available and monitored changes in the individual health of birds. In addition, we determined whether any changes in bird

The present study was conducted to characterize 2 important native chicken breeds from India and compare them on growth, production, egg and semen quality, and welfare traits. The Aseel breed showed (P < 0.001) higher BW at different ages; higher shank, radius, and toe lengths at 40 wk of age; and greater egg weights at 28, 32, and 40 wk of age than did the Kadaknath breed. The Kadaknath breed reached sexual maturity at an early age, and it had higher 40-wk egg production (P < 0.001). Higher egg specific gravity (P < 0.05) and higher albumen (P < 0.001) and shell (P < 0.009) percentages in the

Parvovirus infection of Muscovy ducks caused by a genetically and antigenically distinct virus has been reported from Germany, France, Israel, Hungary, some Asian countries and the USA. The pathological changes include those of degenerative skeletal muscle myopathy and myocarditis, hepatitis, sciatic neuritis and polioencephalomyelitis. In the study presented here, day-old and 3-week-old goslings and Muscovy ducks were infected experimentally with three different parvovirus strains (isolates of D-216/4 from the classical form of Derzsy's disease, D-190/3 from the enteric form of Derzsy's disea

Northern fowl mites were monitored on a caged-layer operation in southern California for 22 mo. Three experienced observers underestimated actual numbers of mites in the vent region approximately 80% of the time. Errors were higher for heavy infestations. Observer estimates were highly correlated with each other (r > 0.89, P < 0.01) and with mite numbers estimated by vent feather removal (r > 0.82, P < 0.01). Mites on hens varied between houses and over time. Molting consistently reduced mite numbers, but did not eliminate then in a flock. Long-term monitoring of individual sentinel hens demon

A reexamination of the expression of cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) during the development of the chicken embryo was carried out using more sensitive immunocytochemical techniques than had been used previously. While the previously determined sequence of CAM expression was confirmed, neural CAM (N-CAM) was also detected on endodermal structures such as the lung epithelium, gut epithelium, and pancreas and on budding structures such as the pancreatic duct and gall bladder. It was also found on ectodermal derivatives of the skin. In most of these sites, N-CAM expression was transient, but in the
