The value of frenotomy for ankyloglossia from a parental perspective.

AIMS: We sought the parental experience of the effects of frenotomy in the presence of ankyloglossia by exploring the reasons for seeking frenotomy, impressions of its value and its impact on breastfeeding. METHOD: A prospective survey of infants receiving frenotomy in a general practice in Palmerston North was undertaken. Infants aged under six months with confirmed ankyloglossia via a GP and lactation consultant were included. One hundred and seventy-six children met the study criteria. Parents completed a pre-procedure questionnaire and received a follow-up phone call. RESULTS: Results de

A culturally integrated framework for infant nutrition beyond health education: lessons and a model from the Tibetan population.

BACKGROUND: Improving infant and young child nutrition among marginalized ethnic groups urgently requires a paradigm shift from traditional health education to culturally integrated systemic interventions. Nutrition in the first 1,000 days is critical for long-term health and human capital development. Amid global efforts to eliminate health disparities, Tibetan infants face severe nutritional challenges, with stunting and anemia rates far exceeding national averages. Feeding practices, rooted in their unique high-altitude environment and deep cultural traditions, are a key social determinant

Can Scat Analysis Describe the Feeding Habits of Big Cats? A Case Study with Jaguars (Panthera onca) in Southern Pantanal, Brazil.

Large cats feeding habits have been studied through two main methods: scat analysis and the carcasses of prey killed by monitored animals. From November 2001 to April 2004, we studied jaguar predation patterns using GPS telemetry location clusters on a cattle ranch in southern Pantanal. During this period, we recorded 431 carcasses of animals preyed upon by monitored jaguars. Concurrently, we collected 125 jaguar scats opportunistically. We compared the frequencies of prey found through each method. We also compared the prey communities using Bray-Curtis similarity coefficient. These compariso

Host preferences, bloodmeal sources, and gonotrophic cycles of Anopheles gambiae complex mosquitoes in rural South West Nigeria.

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: Malaria remains a major public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, with Anopheles gambiae complex, comprising An. gambiae s.s., An. coluzzii , and An. arabiensis , as the principal vectors. These sibling species exhibit diverse ecological and behavioural traits that significantly influence malaria transmission dynamics. Understanding their host preferences, blood-meal sources, and gonotrophic cycles is vital for designing effective vector control strategies. This study investigated the feeding behaviour, blood meal sources, and exophilic tendencies of An. gambiae com

Dietary Iron Sources Among 9-Month-Old Infants from Low-Income Households.

Background: The 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that 6-12-month-old infants receive 11 mg iron/day. The contribution of iron-rich foods in meeting guidelines is unclear. Objectives: The aims were to: (1) determine the contribution of iron-fortified cereal, infant formula and heme-iron sources to infants' total dietary iron intake; (2) examine differences in iron adequacy by milk-feeding type; and (3) identify feeding patterns associated with meeting daily iron requirements through dietary sources. Methods: Mothers of infants were recruited from a pediatric clinic and 24 h

Maternal knowledge and clinically relevant care gaps in preterm infant care in Gaza, Palestine: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Mothers of premature infants need practical knowledge to support feeding, thermal care, infection prevention, phototherapy safety and discharge preparation. Evidence on domain-specific maternal knowledge in resource-constrained neonatal settings remains limited. This study assessed maternal knowledge of premature infant care in Gaza and explored clinically relevant item-level knowledge gaps to inform future education priorities. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 170 mothers of premature infants admitted to neonatal departments in four government hospitals in th

Activation of dopamine D4 receptors in the nucleus accumbens shell increases motivation for palatable food and homeostatic feeding, whereas systemic blockade reduces feeding behavior in rats.

OBJECTIVE: The nucleus accumbens shell is a key region involved in motivation and reinforcement behavior associated with the consumption of palatable foods. However, it has not been studied whether D4 dopaminergic receptors regulate homeostatic feeding and reward-dependent behaviors. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of activation of D4 dopaminergic receptors within nucleus accumbens shell and systemic D4 blockade on motivation for palatable food and homeostatic feeding in male Wistar rats. METHODS: Adult male Wistar rats were tested in operant conditioning paradigms usi

Breastfeeding and Its Impact on Glucose Trends and Hypoglycaemia Risk in At-Risk Neonates: A Prospective Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal glucose regulation undergoes a rapid transition after birth, with glucose levels declining within the first few hours before stabilising. At-risk neonates, including those who are preterm, small-for-gestational-age (SGA), large-for-gestational-age (LGA), or born to mothers with diabetes or obesity, face an increased risk of hypoglycaemia. Early feeding is recommended to support glucose homeostasis, yet the impact of feeding type on glucose trends and hypoglycaemia risk remains unclear. This study aims to compare glucose trajectories and hypoglycaemia incidence between ex

Desynchronization between Food Intake and Light Stimulations Induces Uterine Clock Quiescence in Female Mice.

BACKGROUND: Dysmenorrhea is associated with breakfast skipping in young women, suggesting that fasting in the early active phase disrupts uterine functions. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the possible involvement of the uterine clock system in fasting-induced uterine dysfunction, we examined core clock gene expressions in the uterus using a 28-h interval-fed mouse model. METHODS: Young female mice (8 wk of age) were divided into 3 groups: group I (ad libitum feeding), group II (time-restricted feeding, initial 4 h of the active period every day), and group III (time-restricted feeding for 8 h wi

Evaluation of feeding difficulties using videofluoroscopic swallow study and swallowing therapy in infants and children.

BACKGROUND: Infants and children with feeding difficulties have swallowing dysfunction and high risk of aspiration, which could be silent without choking, resulting in recurrent pneumonia and long-term respiratory morbidity. Videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS) is a useful tool for real-time visualization of the swallowing process and airway aspiration. This study reported a single-institutional 10-year experience of VFSS in pediatric patients with feeding difficulties and the efficacy of swallowing therapy. METHODS: From 2011 to 2020, 30 infants and children with feeding difficulties recei

Cross-alteration of murine skin and tick microbiome concomitant with pathogen transmission after Ixodes ricinus bite.

BACKGROUND: Ticks are major vectors of diseases affecting humans such as Lyme disease or domestic animals such as anaplasmosis. Cross-alteration of the vertebrate host skin microbiome and the tick microbiome may be essential during the process of tick feeding and for the mechanism of pathogen transmission. However, it has been poorly investigated. METHODS: We used mice bitten by field-collected ticks (nymphs and adult ticks) in different experimental conditions to investigate, by 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding, the impact of blood feeding on both the mouse skin microbiome and the tick microbiome

A qualitative study: Mothers of late preterm infants relate their experiences of community-based care.

PURPOSE: In Alberta, the high occurrence of late preterm infants and early hospital discharge of mother-infant dyads has implications for postpartum care in the community. Shortened hospital stay and complexities surrounding the care of biologically and developmentally immature late preterm infants heighten anxiety and fears. Our descriptive phenomenological study explores mothers' experience of caring for their late preterm infants in the community. METHODS: Eleven mothers were interviewed using a semi-structured interview guide. Interview transcripts were analysed using an interpretive them
