[Drug and alcohol abuse in children and adolescents--attempt at determining the current status. 3: Sequelae and preventive strategies].

The role of alcohol as an "entrance drug" to further addictive substances is described. Thereby the gradual increase of number and strength of drugs merits our special attention. Moreover the fetal alcohol syndrome and its prevention is an especially important point of view.

Binge alcohol exposure during all three trimesters alters bone strength and growth in fetal sheep.

Women who drink while pregnant are at a high risk of giving birth to children with neurodevelopmental disorders. Heavy consumption of alcohol during pregnancy is also known to be deleterious to fetal bone growth in both humans and laboratory animals. However, nothing is known regarding the effect of maternal moderate and heavy alcohol binging on fetal and maternal bone strength. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of moderate and heavy alcohol binging throughout gestation on fetal and maternal bone growth and strength. The study was conducted using an ovine model system. The

Women's experiences of messages relating to alcohol consumption, received during their first antenatal care visit: An interpretative phenomenological analysis.

BACKGROUND: Despite greater awareness of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, there has not been similar attention paid to research regarding effective strategies for prevention. AIMS: To explore and interpret the messages women receive during their first antenatal care visit, relating to alcohol consumption. METHODS: Participants were 12 females who had attended an initial antenatal care visit within the previous two years. They participated in semi-structured interviews about their experiences of the health messages they recalled receiving during their first antenatal care visit, with emphasis

Alcohol's Impact on the Fetus.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol is a teratogen and prenatal exposure may adversely impact the developing fetus, increasing risk for negative outcomes, including Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Global trends of increasing alcohol use among women of childbearing age due to economic development, changing gender roles, increased availability of alcohol, peer pressure and social acceptability of women's alcohol use may put an increasing number of pregnancies at risk for prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE). This risk has been exacerbated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in some countries. METHOD: This lite

Delivering alcohol neurotoxicity into nucleus, when clusterin meets BclXL: a commentary.

The study by Kim and colleagues (in press) demonstrated that the expression of nuclear isoform of clusterin is induced by ethanol (EtOH) to participate in apoptotic cell death of neurons in developing rodent brain. EtOH-induced nuclear clusterin interacts with Bcl(XL), thereby liberating proapoptotic Bax. This study indicates the proapoptotic role of nuclear clusterin in EtOH-exposed neurons, linking specific nuclear events to alcohol neurotoxicity. The study provides novel insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Alcohol exposure during pregnancy and its impact on fetal neurodevelopment: a bibliometric and scientific mapping analysis.

Alcohol consumption per capita is increasing, particularly among women of reproductive age. When consumed during pregnancy, it can induce spontaneous abortion and changes in neurodevelopment as it is a compound with high teratogenic potential. Studies have been performed to describe the effects of maternal-fetal alcohol exposure. This review aimed to identify and map knowledge about alcohol exposure during pregnancy and its effects on fetal neurodevelopment, based on an analysis of the 100 most cited articles. To achieve this goal, we performed a comprehensive search of the Web of Science Core

[Effects of alcohol and smoking in pregnancy].

Nicotine and alcohol are legal drugs, which damage not only the health of the consumer, but also the society due to health-economic costs. In pregnancy, the consequences of alcohol consumption and smoking for the unborn life in pregnancy are dramatic. The irreversibly damaging effect of alcohol is proven in each stage of the pregnancy, whereby the phase of the organogenesis is the most sensitive period. Beside a higher incidence for deformations of all organs, the damage of the central nervous system is leading, since mental-intellectual retardation of children after alcohol consumption in pre

[Survey of secondary school students 18 years old or older about knowledge on risks to the fetus related to alcohol consumption during pregnancy].

INTRODUCTION: Being not perceived as risky for health, alcohol consumption is socially accepted worldwide. Nevertheless, related risks for t … 0,1% answered that alcohol use is allowed without damage the fetus. Only the 17,5% answered to know Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. CONCLUSION: The study showed satisfying knowledge on general aspects, but scarce on specific ones, and a limited awareness that only complete abstinence from alcohol when pregnant can prevent irreversible damages of the fetus. This results could h …

Alcohol and fetal damage.

Since the identification of fetal alcohol syndrome in the end of the 1960s, substantial evidence has accumulated on a number of adverse effects that alcohol consumption during pregnancy may have on the fetus. Long-term effects on child development has also been observed. Although the various types of effects are well documented, less is known about threshold levels of consumption, under which there is no risk of damage. Few studies have assessed the risk associated with high episodic drinking. From a theoretical point of view, binge drinking in critical stages in organ formation may constitute

The effects of acute alcohol intoxication on biophysical activities: a case report.

A computer-assisted biophysical assessment was performed in a woman with chronic alcoholism at 37 weeks' gestation. She was first seen in a state of acute alcohol intoxication (322 mg/dl). Although fetal breathing movement incidence was normal (30%), fetal tachypnea (67 breaths per minute) and decreased fetal body movements (0.11%) were seen. Because these findings differ from those previously reported with regard to normal pregnancies exposed to lower levels of alcohol, their implications are discussed.

Placental alterations related to neurodevelopmental and associated disorders.

Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), are con … ehensive overview of placental alterations associated with the diagnosis of NDDs (ASD and ADHD) and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Through this review, potential molecular targets emerged like epigenetic markers for ASD, immune alterations for ADHD, and altered gene expression for FASD, highlighting specific roles of the placenta in different contexts of NDDs.

5-Mehtyltetrahydrofolate rescues alcohol-induced neural crest cell migration abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol is detrimental to early development. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) due to maternal alcohol abuse results in a series of developmental abnormalities including cranial facial dysmorphology, ocular anomalies, congenital heart defects, microcephaly and intellectual disabilities. Previous studies have been shown that ethanol exposure causes neural crest (NC) apoptosis and perturbation of neural crest migration. However, the underlying mechanism remains elusive. In this report we investigated the fetal effect of alcohol on the process of neural crest development in the …

Theory of Mind deficits in childhood mental and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Theory of mind (ToM) is a complex cognitive mechanism which refers to our ability to understand that other people have beliefs, plans, desires, hopes, intentions, and knowledge that may differ from our own mental and emotional states. Theory of mind is critical for social and interpersonal functioning and allows people to make sense of other's behavior. Theinitial aim of theory of mind research was to record normative development in preschool age children. Almost 30 years ago, when researchers discovered that theory of mind is altered in individuals with autism spectrum disorder, they also exp
