Digestive and nutritional considerations in celiac disease: could supplementation help?

Due to the increased immune activation in the intestinal tract of people with celiac disease, the digestive and absorptive processes of those affected may be compromised. Individuals with celiac disease are more susceptible to pancreatic insufficiencies, dysbiosis, lactase insufficiencies, and folic acid, vitamin B12, iron, and vitamin D deficiencies, as well as accelerated bone loss due to an increase in inflammatory signaling molecules. Beyond strict maintenance of a gluten-free diet, research has shown benefit with additional nutritional supplementation to assist in regulation of several of

Cobalamin and Folate Status among Breastfed Infants in Bhaktapur, Nepal.

Cobalamin and folate are crucial micronutrients during infancy and they are required for growth and cognitive development. Due to the monotonous and predominantly vegetarian-based complementary feeding and poor maternal micronutrient status, infants from low- and middle-income countries are susceptible to cobalamin deficiency. However, data on plasma cobalamin and folate and the functional markers methylmalonic acid and total homocysteine from breastfed infants in Nepal are still needed. We collected plasma samples from 316 6⁻11-month-old breastfed infants with a length-for-age of less than mi

Correlation between serum vitamin levels and gestational diabetes mellitus.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common clinical complication during pregnancy, with its pathogenesis not yet fully elucidated. Vitamin D contributes to GDM pathogenesis by regulating pancreatic β-cell function, immune responses, and lipid metabolism. Vitamin D deficiency may contribute to GDM through these mechanisms. Vitamin E levels in GDM patients are lower than those in normal pregnant women, and its deficiency may increase the risk of GDM, potentially due to its antioxidant properties, although the specific mechanisms remain unclear. The relationship between vitamin A levels and

The role of iron deficiency and factors associated with anemia during pregnancy in Southeastern Tigray, Ethiopia, 2020.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women are more likely to experience anemia due to their increased need for nutrients, and anemia has been associated with unfavorable maternal-fetal outcomes. In Ethiopia, anemia rates are increasing despite efforts to reduce them. Besides, the extent to which iron deficiency contributes to anemia in this population is unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the role of iron deficiency and factors associated with anemia during pregnancy in the southeastern zone of Tigray, Ethiopia. METHOD: A facility-based, cross-sectional study was conducted among 311 pregnant wom

Multifactorial Etiology of Anemia in Celiac Disease and Effect of Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Review.

Celiac disease (CD) is a multisystemic disorder with different clinical expressions, from malabsorption with diarrhea, anemia, and nutritional compromise to extraintestinal manifestations. Anemia might be the only clinical expression of the disease, and iron deficiency anemia is considered one of the most frequent extraintestinal clinical manifestations of CD. Therefore, CD should be suspected in the presence of anemia without a known etiology. Assessment of tissue anti-transglutaminase and anti-endomysial antibodies are indicated in these cases and, if positive, digestive endoscopy and intest

Nutritional deficiencies after gastric bypass surgery.

Nutritional deficiencies are unrecognized in approximately 50% of patients who undergo gastric bypass surgery. The authors present some of the more common nutritional deficiencies and related complications that can occur in this patient population. Greater awareness of the potential effects of nutritional deficiency after gastric bypass surgery may help physicians better recognize and manage these challenging conditions.

Anemia.

Anemia is an enormous problem worldwide that is worse in the developing countries but by no means lacking in developed countries. Women and children are disproportionately affected. Nutritional anemias, mainly caused by a lack of iron and folate, are largely correctable by dietary improvement, but this socioeconomic change may not be readily achieved. The inherited disorders, the hemoglobinopathies and thalassemias, in their heterozygous forms are beneficial to the affected populations. Prevention of the homozygous forms and the serious diseases that result can only be addressed by education.

Double-blind, placebo-controlled trial comparing effects of supplementation of two micronutrient sprinkles on fatty acid status in Cambodian infants.

BACKGROUND: Infants in developing countries require early dietary interventions to prevent nutritional deficiencies, above all protein, energy, iron and zinc. To what extent these interventions may affect the fatty acid (FA) status is still unknown. OBJECTIVES: To examine and compare the effects of 2 micronutrient "sprinkles" supplementations (iron 12.5 mg + folic acid 150 microg, iron/folate and iron 12.5 mg + folic acid 150 microg + zinc 5 mg + vitamins A, C and D3, mineral/micronutrient [MMN]) versus placebo on the FA status of Cambodian infants. METHODS: A total of 204 infants age 6 mo a

Influence of Dietary Compounds on Arsenic Metabolism and Toxicity. Part II-Human Studies.

Exposure to various forms of arsenic (As), the source of which may be environmental as well as occupational exposure, is associated with many adverse health effects. Therefore, methods to reduce the adverse effects of As on the human body are being sought. Research in this area focuses, among other topics, on the dietary compounds that are involved in the metabolism of this element. Therefore, the aim of this review was to analyze the influence of methionine, betaine, choline, folic acid, vitamin B2, B6, B12 and zinc on the efficiency of inorganic As (iAs) metabolism and the reduction in the s

Dietary habits and nutritional status of renal transplant patients.

BACKGROUND: Although dialysis nutritional problems are well described, nutritional problems after renal transplantation (RT) have received little attention. METHODS: Body composition as assessed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry in 115 stable patients 6.6 +/- 5.9 years after RT and repeated 2.9 years later, when a 3-day dietary history was obtained in 79 patients. RESULTS: Patients diet was generally sufficient, but was characterized by a high fat intake and deficiencies in folic acid, vitamin D, thiamine, iodine, selenium, and iron intake. Patients were often overweight, and at any given

[Vitamins and trace elements in the elderly (author's transl)].

A review of published research data on the requirement, intake, and signs of deficiency of vitamins and trace elements in old age is presented. It particularly deals with the problem of a general indication for vitamins and trace element supplements - the mean components of geriatric preparations. Special emphasis is laid on the question if these substances exhibit a specific effect on the alterations of physical and psychic capacity typically accompanying the growing old. It could be shown that in several groups of the elderly diminished vitamin levels are common and/or vitamin and trace elem

Short interpregnancy intervals and unfavourable pregnancy outcome: role of folate depletion.

There is no generally accepted explanation for the excess risk of adverse pregnancy outcome after short interpregnancy intervals. In this paper, we present a hypothesis that is both biologically plausible, empirically testable, and able to explain many observations. Maternal serum and erythrocyte concentrations of folate decrease from the fifth month of pregnancy onwards and remain low for a fairly long time after delivery. Women who become pregnant before folate restoration is complete have a raised risk of folate insufficiency at the time of conception and during pregnancy. As a consequence,

Homocysteine Induces Inflammation in Retina and Brain.

Homocysteine (Hcy) is an amino acid that requires vitamins B12 and folic acid for its metabolism. Vitamins B12 and folic acid deficiencies lead to hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy, elevated Hcy), which is linked to the development of diabetic retinopathy (DR), age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and Alzheimer's disease (AD). The goal of the current study was to explore inflammation as an underlying mechanism of HHcy-induced pathology in age related diseases such as AMD, DR, and AD. Mice with HHcy due to a lack of the enzyme cystathionine-β-synthase (CBS) and wild-type mice were evaluated for mic
