The rare condition of strings of a missing intrauterine contraceptive device presenting at the anus is described. Partial removal was achieved via the rectum and this was followed by a normal uncomplicated pregnancy and delivery.

Benign strictures of the biliary tree present difficult problems in management. The method of transhepatic stenting constitutes an excellent and safe procedure and provides good results in this kind of surgery. Atkinson tubes are inserted endoscopically for palliation of obstructing esophageal carcinoma. A technique was developed to reposition or remove dislocated tubes that involves the use of a dilation balloon catheter. The technique was successful in treating three partially dislocated tubes and one of two completely dislocated tubes (tubes completely dislodged into the stomach). The only complication occurred in two patients who coughed up a small amount of blood.

The functional success of a Jones Pyrex tube depends on the accurate positioning of the tube. The modified trephining technique for the insertion of a Jones tube ensures accurate positioning by using a guide wire to maintain the selected position and direction of the tube while a 1.5-mm-diameter trephine cuts a cylindrical track around the guide wire, down which a straight Pyrex tube is threaded. The snug fit between the tube and the trephined track has minimized postoperative extrusion (5%) and migration (7%). This technique has been used to insert 93 tubes in 84 patients aged 7 to 83 years.

PURPOSE: To describe a case of free migration of intraocular glass in aphakia after glaucoma surgery.
METHODS: We report the case of a 27-year-old man with a history of perforating injury to the right eye 10 years previously and glaucoma surgery 1 year previously presenting with 1 month of pain and frequent floaters in front of the right eye. On examination, the glass fragment was seen to lie free in the anterior chamber or migrate backwards through the pupil, remaining mobile on the inferior retinal surface when the patient was prone or supine, respectively.

We report the case of a 60-year-old male with history of surgery for tracheal stenosis 21 years prior to the onset of difficult asthma-like symptoms. Upon exploring the tracheobronchial tree using the fiberoptic bronchoscope, a surgical gauze was found. The foreign body migrated transluminally from the mediastinum into the trachea and its removal was possible with rigid bronchoscopy leading to a rapid recovery of his symptoms.

We report risk factors associated with intraocular penetration of caterpillar hair seen at our institute from January 2005 to December 2007. Published reports of nail gun injuries to the face are uncommon. We describe an unusual delayed presentation with injury through the infratemporal fossa and a literature review. Using this case report, we sought evidence that silicone oil may infiltrate the subarachnoidal space. Vitrectomy combined with silicone oil implantation was performed on the right eye of a 72-year-old woman. The silicone oil was removed 2 months later, because the patient had developed elevated intraocular pressure. The blind and painful eye was subsequently enucleated. The authors report 2 cases of pediatric emergencies caused by fishbone ingestion. In the first case, 2 fishbones within the sac of an inguinal hernia were detected during an emergency operation for suspected testicular torsion; in the second case, a big fishbone was found in the omentum covering an inflammed appendix during an emergency appendicectomy. In some cases this three foreign bodies can be detected with a simple abdominal X-ray; the relationship between the fish species involved and the diagnosis is discussed.

We examined three cases of transcorneal extrusion of anterior chamber intraocular lenses. In each case a preexisting condition (rheumatoid arthritis, glaucoma, and herpes zoster ophthalmicus, respectively) contributed to corneal necrosis and subsequent extrusion of the pseudophakos. The clinicopathologic correlations of this condition are discussed, as well as some causes of corneal decompensation associated with anterior chamber lenses. We emphasize the need for careful evaluation of patients who have preexisting disease before intraocular lens implantation.
