OBJECTIVES: To describe a new technique to obtain minimally invasive but efficient vertebral body (VB) reconstruction, augmentation, and stabilization in severe osteoporotic and neoplastic fractures, combining two pre-existing procedures. The implant of vertebral body stents (VBS) is followed by insertion of percutaneous, fenestrated, cement-augmented pedicular screws that act as anchors to the posterior elements for the cement/stent complex. The screws reduce the risk of stent mobilization in a non-intact VB cortical shell and bridge middle column and pedicular fractures. This procedure resul

BACKGROUND: Severe postoperative pain is one of the causes of prolonged hospitalization, rehabilitation and complications after surgical treatment of distal radius fractures. Preemptive local anesthesia is effective in reduction of postoperative pain in general surgery, neurosurgery, gynecology and orthopedic surgery. The aim of the study was to assess the role and effectiveness of preoperative local anesthetic infiltration of the surgical site in open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of distal radius fractures under general anesthesia.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 88 patients with acute dista

PURPOSE: Fractures of the proximal ulna are common injuries in the elderly population. These fractures can be managed nonsurgically or with open reduction internal fixation (ORIF). Whereas nonsurgical management may lead to a relative loss of elbow extension and to nonunion, ORIF carries a risk of complications. Although complications specific to the orthopedic intervention have been reported, few studies have identified postoperative systemic complications in this higher-risk group. The purposes of this study were to determine the rate of systemic complications in patients undergoing surgical

BACKGROUND: Supracondylar humeral fractures are one of the most common skeletal injuries in children. In cases of displacement and instability, the standard procedure is early closed reduction and percutaneous Kirschner wire fixation. However, between 10 and 20 % of patients present late. According to the literature, patients with neglected fractures are those patients who presented for treatment after 14 days of injury. The delay is either due to lack of medical facilities or social and financial constraints. The neglected cases are often closed injuries with no vascular compromise. However,

The purpose of this study was to compare the outcomes of volar plating using two different implants for distal radius fractures. Fifty-two patients with AO type C fractures were placed in either of two groups: the AO LDRS group (26 patients) or the Acu-Loc group (26 patients). Radiological parameters including radial length, radial inclination, volar tilt, and intra-articular step-off were significantly improved after surgery. The mean Mayo Wrist Performance Score was 84.6 in the AO LDRS group and 81.1 in the Acu-Loc group. The mean Subjective Wrist Value was 86.7% in the AO LDRS group and 86.

BACKGROUND: Intra-articular fractures of the distal radius (DRF) are associated with a twofold increase in the risk of scapholunate ligament injury (SLI). The aim of this study was to compare functional outcome, pain, and disability between patients with operatively treated DRF and either an acute, repaired scapholunate ligament injury or no ligament injury.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 18 patients with an intraarticular DRF and SLI that was diagnosed and treated (Group I) and compared them with 20 patients with DRF without associated ligament injury (Group II) (20 women, 18 men; aver

In a prospective randomised trial, 455 patients presenting to one hospital with a displaced intracapsular fracture were randomised to either closed reduction and internal fixation with three cancellous screws or replacement with an uncemented hemiarthroplasty. Follow-up of surviving patients was for between 9 and 15 years to determine the long-term outcome for the two treatment methods. 93% of patients died during this follow-up period. There was no difference in mortality between the two procedures. The need for revision surgery to the hip was increased for those treated by internal fixation

We reviewed the clinical details and radiographs of 52 patients with ballistic fractures of the femur admitted to the International Committee of the Red Cross Hospital in Kenya (Lopiding), who had sustained injuries in neighbouring Sudan. In all cases there had been a significant delay in the initial surgery (> 24 hours), and all patients were managed without stabilisation of the fracture by internal or external fixation. Of the 52 patients, three required an amputation for persisting infection of the fracture site despite multiple debridements. A further patient was treated by an excision art
