A mild case of frontonasal dysplasia: the rhinologic perspective.

Frontonasal dysplasia (FND) is a congenital malformation characterized by hypertelorism, broad nasion with a midline cleft in the bony dorsum, midline defect of the frontal bone, absence of the nasal tip, and deformities in the nasal alar region. The clinician should be aware of the mild forms of FND. We presented absence of crista galli in a mild case of FND. Computed tomography scanning should assess the facial bones, nose, and paranasal structures. If a surgical correction is planned, this complete work-up prevents unexpected complications and complements the evaluation of paranasal deformi…

Massive aneurysmal bone cyst of the anterior cranial fossa floor--case report.

A 19-year-old male patient presented with a midline facial, nose, and forehead hard and bony swelling associated with hypertelorism. Neuroimaging revealed a massive tumor involving the anterior cranial fossa floor, which had occupied and enlarged all paranasal air sinuses, and displaced the orbits outwards and the frontal lobes of the brain superiorly. A basal transcranial route was used for radical resection of the massive and vascular tumor. Histological examination confirmed an aneurysmal bone cyst. Such tumors only rarely involve the cranial bones or paranasal air sinuses.

Osteopathia striata--a case report.

Osteopathia striata is an unusual skeletal condition that can affect the bones of the skull quite markedly and result in dental problems that have rarely been discussed in the literature. The characteristic features exhibited by the patient in this case report were dense maxillary and mandibular bone, a high forehead with frontal bossing, a broad nasal bridge, prominent zygomatic arches and thickened angles of the mandible. The mouth opening was limited as a result of sclerosis of the mastoid process, and right lateral excursion of the mandible was reduced, probably because of a deformity of t

[Atypical metastases disclosing vesicular carcinoma of the thyroid].

Differentiated carcinoma of the thyroid may generate bone or lung metastases. Some times, thyroid cancer remains latent, and is revealed by the presence of secondary bone tumors. In the present paper, we relate our personal experiences with two patients who had thyroid cancer diagnosed indirectly through the occurrence of distant metastases. The secondary tumors were localized in the right frontal sinus and the cranial vault, respectively. We discuss the diagnostic and therapeutic problems involved with such metastases. We further present a review of the literature dealing with this topic.

Radiation-induced osteosarcomas after treatment for frontal gliomas: a report of two cases.

Most radiation-induced osteosarcomas of the skull are reported to arise in the facial bone or paranasal sinus after radiotherapy for retinoblastoma and/or pituitary adenoma. Here we report two cases of radiation-induced osteosarcoma in the paranasal sinus after treatment for frontal glioma. Case 1 was a 56-year-old woman who underwent surgical resection of a left frontal tumor in October 1990. The histological diagnosis was a low-grade glioma, and radiotherapy of 54 Gy was administered. Sixteen years later, in September 2006, the patient noted an enlarging subcutaneous mass in the right fronta

Radiologic Evidence of Delayed Frontal Sinus Disease After Feminizing Frontal Cranioplasty.

OBJECTIVE: Feminizing frontal cranioplasty (FFC) is an essential technique in feminization of the upper third, often involving the violation of the anterior table of the frontal sinus. Though case reports document frontal sinus complications years after surgery, no studies to date examine the presence of delayed frontal sinus disease on long-term imaging after FFC. STUDY DESIGN: Case series. SETTING: Tertiary care center. METHODS: Adult patients who underwent FFC with type III forehead classification between August 2016 to December 2019 were offered postoperative computerized tomography (CT

Surgical Treatment of Anterior Plagiocephaly With Limited Calvarial Osteotomy.

OBJECTIVE: Anterior plagiocephaly is a condition in which the unicoronal suture is prematurely fused and the skull shape will change due to asymmetric growth. METHODS: This is a retrospective study describing the unilateral limited frontal osteotomy for remodeling deformed areas in the frontal and orbital bone and its pros and cons. RESULTS: Twenty-eight patients were included in the study, with a mean age of 16.8 (±11.7) months. Mean intraoperative bleeding was 78.1 (±23.6) mL. One (3.57%) patient developed postoperative bleeding, around 200 mL. After 12 months, all patients (100%) had grad

Pericranial flap fixation using titanium miniplates and screws.

Opening the frontal sinuses is a common occurrence during neurosurgical procedures involving the anterior cranial base. Obliteration of the exposed sinuses is usually accomplished packing them with various materials and/or covering them with an anteriorly-based pericranial flap. In the absence of more extensive cranial base defects, the flap only needs to be wrapped around the sinus and secured against its posterior wall. We describe the technique for and the results of using titanium miniplates and screws to secure the pericranial flap to the inner surface of the frontal bone. In 10 patients …

Exchange hybrid cranioplasty using particulate bone graft and demineralized bone matrix: the best of both worlds.

Reconstruction of craniofacial defects in children presents several challenges that are not encountered in the adult population. Autologous bone grafts have long been the criterion standard for repairing these defects. Recently, several new materials and techniques have expanded our arsenal of reconstructive options. In this clinical report, we describe the use of both particulate bone grafting and demineralized bone matrix together to repair craniofacial defects encountered in pediatric patients.

Van der Woude syndrome with sensorineural hearing loss, large craniofacial sinuses, dental pulp stones, and minor limb anomalies: report of a four-generation Thai family.

A four-generation Thai family affected with Van der Woude syndrome is reported. The disorder appeared to be originally inherited from a person who was half Thai and half Pakistani. The lip lesions found in this family were varied and did not appear to be related to other phenotypes. There were some clinical manifestations possibly specific for the condition in this family. They included sensorineural hearing loss, prominent frontal bone, large frontal/sphenoidal/maxillary sinuses with increased mastoid air cells, long tooth roots, dental pulp stones, ankyloglossia, brachydactyly of hands, brac…

The late treatment of vertical orbital dystopia resulting from an orbital roof fracture.

Traumatic fracture of the orbital roof is uncommon and it may be unrecognized at the time of injury. In this article we describe a patient with progressive vertical orbital dystopia four years after he sustained a fracture of his "frontal" bone. Surgical exploration revealed an orbital roof fracture complicated by a chronic dural leak. An intracranial-extracranial approach through a modified frontal craniotomy provided excellent visualization to elevate the bony orbit and globe safely and repair the dural tear. Our study illustrates the need to correct residual soft tissue deformity at a secon

A Brief Clinical Study: Consecutive Occurences of Frontal Sinus Pneumocele.

Sinus pneumocele is a rare condition marked by pathologic expansion of a paranasal sinus with concomitant bone loss. Here, we describe the case of a 24-year-old male who first presented with a 2×3 cm bony projection of his right medial forehead. Exam and history were notably absent for any skin tethering, prior trauma, inflammation, or neurological symptoms. A computed tomography scan confirmed the prominence was secondary to an enlarged right frontal sinus. The pneumocele was successfully corrected through surgery, but the patient notably developed a similar presentation on the left frontal s

[Findings of the syphilis lesions in the skulls from the "Broumov Ossuary"].

Syphilis is a treponematosis clinically characterized by a primary lesion, a secondary rash affecting the skin and the mucous membranes and late lesions affecting cardiovascular and central nervous systems, viscera and bones. Off all the skeletal lesions, the most characteristic are those of the skull, most commonly affecting frontal and parietal bones and nasal and palatal region. The collection of 647 adult skulls of both sexes and 98 child and adolescent skulls from the "Broumov Ossuary" (13th - 18th century) was examined for the presence of the bone syphilis lesions. Seven cases of the gum

Closed Reduction of an Isolated Zygomatic Arch Fracture Under Local Anesthesia: A Case Report.

The zygomatic bone is one of the most prominent bones in the facial region. It forms the most anterolateral projection on each side of the middle face and is articulated with the maxilla, frontal, and temporal bones. Isolated zygomatic arch fractures can occur when a direct force is applied to the zygoma. A variety of intraoral and extraoral techniques have been used as closed reduction techniques for isolated fractures of the zygomatic arch. In this case report, we aim to present our approach for the treatment of a 40-year-old patient with an isolated right zygomatic arch fracture. We used th

Delayed membranous cranial ossification in a mother and child.

We report on a girl and her mother with delayed intramembranous ossification of the cranial vault. The 11-month-old girl had a large ossification defect involving parietal bones, squamous portion of temporal bones, and interparietal region of occipital bone, while the mother showed a complete ossified cranial vault with flat posterior parietal region and prominent occiput. Both had a similar face characterized by frontal bossing, hypertelorism, downward slant of palpebral fissures, flat nasal bridge, and short midface. On reviewing the literature, we concluded that these cases may be a dominan
