[Human hydatidosis: general aspects and epidemiological situation in Chile according to hospital discharge and mandatory reporting from 2001 to 2005].

Human hydatidosis in Chile is described using as a source of information the Disease Notification Systems and hospital discharges between 2001 and 2005. To assess the extent of human infection we calculated incidence rates and hospital discharges during this period by geographical region. Incidence rate for the period was 2.2 per 100,000 inhabitants with higher rates in the regions of Coquimbo, La Araucania and Magallanes. The hospital discharge rate for the period was 6 per 100.000 inhabitants, being the most affected regions: La Araucania, Aysén and Magallanes. 58.8% of cases reported are fr

Utilizing Geospatial Mapping to Identify High-Need Areas for Pelvic Health Rehabilitation and Inform Strategic Health System Planning.

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic floor dysfunction detrimentally impacts function. Pelvic Health Rehabilitation (PHR) is a first-line, non-invasive treatment. However, access to PHR services is deficient due to lack of trained rehabilitation providers, limited public awareness of its value, and knowledge gaps among potential referral sources. The purpose of this project was to (1) use geospatial mapping to identify areas of need for PHR services in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and (2) apply the results to create a feedback loop to guide VHA strategic planning. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Veteran d

A resource reallocation model for school dental screening: taking advantage of teledentistry in low-risk areas.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the scale of resource transfer that could be achieved by screening low-risk schoolchildren using teledentistry rather than using traditional visual dental examination. METHODS: This study was based on a previous cost-minimisation study that compared the costs of two dental-screening approaches (visual and teledentistry). The data for the population of children 5-14 years of age was obtained from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and was divided across Australia according to statistical local area (SA2). The cost models (for teledentistry and visual screening) for each

An integrated approach for risk profiling and spatial prediction of Schistosoma mansoni-hookworm coinfection.

Multiple-species parasitic infections are pervasive in the developing world, yet resources for their control are scarce. We present an integrated approach for risk profiling and spatial prediction of coinfection with Schistosoma mansoni and hookworm for western Côte d'Ivoire. Our approach combines demographic, environmental, and socioeconomic data; incorporates them into a geographic information system; and employs spatial statistics. Demographic and socioeconomic data were obtained from education registries and from a questionnaire administered to schoolchildren. Environmental data were deriv

Preventing the preventable through effective surveillance: the case of diphtheria in a rural district of Maharashtra, India.

BACKGROUND: Epidemic diphtheria is still poorly understood and continues to challenge both developing and developed countries. In the backdrop of poor immunization coverage, non-existent adult boosters, weak case based surveillance and persistence of multiple foci, there is a heightened risk of re-emergence of the disease in epidemic forms in India. Investigating each outbreak to understand the epidemiology of the disease and its current status in the country is therefore necessary. Dhule a predominantly tribal and rural district in Northern Maharashtra has consistently recorded low vaccinatio

Health effects for the population living near a cement plant: an epidemiological assessment.

Epidemiological studies have shown the association between the exposure to air pollution and several adverse health effects. To evaluate the possible acute health effects of air pollution due to the emissions of a cement plant in two small municipalities in Italy (Mazzano and Rezzato), a case-control study design was used. The risks of hospital admission for cardiovascular or respiratory diseases for increasing levels of exposure to cement plant emissions were estimated, separately for adults (age>34 years) and children (0-14 years). Odds ratios (OR) were estimated using unconditional regressi

Mapping violence and policing as an environmental-structural barrier to health service and syringe availability among substance-using women in street-level sex work.

BACKGROUND: Within street-based sex work and substance-using populations, there is growing evidence to support the role of place, both physical setting and social meanings attached to place, in mediating the effectiveness and reach of health and harm reduction services. METHODS: Social mapping was used to explore how health service and syringe availability may be impacted at the geographic level by avoidance of physical settings due to violence and policing among women in street-level sex work. Through a community-based research partnership and extensive peer-led outreach over a 6-month perio

Colorectal Cancer in Bhutan: Identifying Health System Gaps and Priorities.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is an emerging public health concern in Bhutan, a lower-middle-income country with a geographically challenging terrain and limited specialised oncology services. As the country undergoes an epidemiological and economic transition, CRC numbers are steadily increasing. While Bhutan has made progress in cancer control through national programmes, CRC has not been a priority cancer, and health system readiness for its screening and management remains unclear. This study aimed to assess CRC care delivery in Bhutan and identify systems gaps using the World Health

Prediction of Low Community Sanitation Coverage Using Environmental and Sociodemographic Factors in Amhara Region, Ethiopia.

This study developed and validated a model for predicting the probability that communities in Amhara Region, Ethiopia, have low sanitation coverage, based on environmental and sociodemographic conditions. Community sanitation coverage was measured between 2011 and 2014 through trachoma control program evaluation surveys. Information on environmental and sociodemographic conditions was obtained from available data sources and linked with community data using a geographic information system. Logistic regression was used to identify predictors of low community sanitation coverage (< 20% versus ≥

Relation of air pollution with epidemiology of respiratory diseases in isfahan, Iran from 2005 to 2009.

BACKGROUND: National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) scientists shows that long-term exposure to air pollutants increases the risk of respiratory diseases such as allergies, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and lung cancer. Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to the health effects of ozone, fine particles, and other airborne toxicants. Air pollution factors are considered as one of the underlying causes of respiratory diseases. This study aimed to determine the association of respiratory diseases documented in medical records and air pollution

A Flexible Spatio-Temporal Model for Air Pollution with Spatial and Spatio-Temporal Covariates.

The development of models that provide accurate spatio-temporal predictions of ambient air pollution at small spatial scales is of great importance for the assessment of potential health effects of air pollution. Here we present a spatio-temporal framework that predicts ambient air pollution by combining data from several different monitoring networks and deterministic air pollution model(s) with geographic information system (GIS) covariates. The model presented in this paper has been implemented in an R package, SpatioTemporal, available on CRAN. The model is used by the EPA funded Multi-Eth
