A review on the potential sources and health implications of fluoride in groundwater of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Groundwater is a major source of drinking water for millions of people around the world. Over 400 million people in Africa depend solely on it as their main source of water supply. Fluoride is a common contaminant in groundwater. In low concentration (0.5-1.0 mg/L), fluoride is needed by humans for healthy development of bones and teeth, however, a concentration >1.5 mg/L has been linked with several fluorosis and non-fluorosis diseases. Dental and skeletal fluorosis are the major fluorosis diseases commonly reported with the consumption of fluoride-rich water. Although fluoride intake through

Prevalence, source and risk of antibiotic resistance genes in the sediments of Lake Tai (China) deciphered by metagenomic assembly: A comparison with other global lakes.

Lakes are one of the natural reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in environments. Long retention times in lakes potentially allow ARGs to persist and may create increased opportunities for the emergence of resistant pathogens. In this study, we investigated the prevalence, source and dissemination risk of ARGs in the sediments of a typical urban lake, Lake Tai (China) which has been a drastic example of water pollution with eutrophication in the world due to its proliferated cyanobacterial blooms. High-throughput profilings of ARGs in the sediments of Lake Tai were characterized w

Purification of a Crenarchaeal ATP Synthase in the Light of the Unique Bioenergetics of Ignicoccus Species.

In this study, the ATP synthase of Ignicoccus hospitalis was purified, characterized, and structurally compared to the respective enzymes of the other Ignicoccus species, to shed light on energy conservation in this unique group of archaea. The crenarchaeal genus Ignicoccus comprises three described species, i.e., I. hospitalis and Ignicoccus islandicus from hot marine sediments near Iceland and Ignicoccus pacificus from a hydrothermal vent system in the Pacific Ocean. This genus is unique among all archaea due to the unusual cell envelope, consisting of two membranes that enclose a large inte

A novel submerged Rotala rotundifolia, its growth characteristics and remediation potential for eutrophic waters.

The vegetative growth and remediation potential of Rotala rotundifolia, a novel submerged aquatic plant, for eutrophic waters were investigated on different sediments, and under a range of nitrogen concentrations. Rotala Rotundifolia grew better on silt than on sand and gravel in terms of plant height, tiller number and biomass accumulation. Percent increment of biomass was enhanced at low water nitrogen (ammonium nitrogen concentration ≤10 mg/L). The maximum total nitrogen and total phosphorus removals in the overlying water were between 54% to 66% and 42% to 57%, respectively. Nitrogen conte

Anthropogenic influence shapes the distribution of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) in the sediment of Sundarban estuary in India.

The abundance and dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes as emerging environmental contaminants have become a significant and growing threat to human and environmental health. Traditionally, investigations of antibiotic resistance have been confined to a subset of clinically relevant antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens. During the last decade it became evident that the environmental microbiota possesses an enormous number and diversity of antibiotic resistance genes, some of which are very similar to the genes circulating in pathogenic microbiota. Recent studies demonstrate that aqu

Fraction distribution and leaching behavior of heavy metals in dredged sediment disposal sites around Meiliang Bay, Lake Taihu (China).

The objectives of this study were to characterize the heavy metal contamination status of surface soils sampled at two dredged sediment land disposal sites (the Baimao and Kongwan landfills) in Meiliang Bay, Lake Taihu, China, as well as to investigate the effect on their leaching behaviors due to acid rain. Among all the metals, only the nickel content in the Baimao landfill was higher than the Chinese reference value, and all metal contents were below the limit values for agricultural soils. The fraction distribution of metals by sequential extraction was similar at both sites. Cadmium had a

Chemical characteristics of dissolved mercury in the pore water of Minamata Bay sediments.

Methylmercury concentrations in fish from the historically polluted Minamata Bay remain higher than in fish from other coastal seas around Japan. To obtain a better understanding of this phenomenon, the chemical characteristics of pore water from Minamata Bay sediments were investigated. Samples were taken from two stations over a 1-year period. Total average values in the pore water at the two stations for dissolved total mercury and methylmercury concentrations were 6.64±4.93 and 2.69±2.07ng/l, respectively. The pore water was centrifuged at 1000rpm to 3000rpm. The highest ratio of dissolved

Prediction of fish and sediment mercury in streams using landscape variables and historical mining.

Widespread mercury (Hg) contamination of aquatic systems in the Sierra Nevada of California, U.S., is associated with historical use to enhance gold (Au) recovery by amalgamation. In areas affected by historical Au mining operations, including the western slope of the Sierra Nevada and downstream areas in northern California, such as San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento River-San Joaquin River Delta, microbial conversion of Hg to methylmercury (MeHg) leads to bioaccumulation of MeHg in food webs, and increased risks to humans and wildlife. This study focused on developing a predictive model fo

Stabilization of mercury in sediment by using biochars under reducing conditions.

Mercury (Hg) is widely distributed in different localities around the world and poses a serious health threat to humans, especially when ingested in the form of methylmercury (MeHg). Efforts have been directed toward decreasing the production of MeHg by converting Hg to stable forms. Activated carbon and biochar have been evaluated as stabilization agents for Hg in contaminated sediments. However, the long-term fate of Hg stabilized by these materials remains unclear. Here, we compare the effectiveness of Hg stabilization using two biochars prepared from switchgrass at 300°C (lowT) and 600°C (

Degradation of phthalate esters and acetaminophen in river sediments using the electrokinetic process integrated with a novel Fenton-like process catalyzed by nanoscale schwertmannite.

The main objective of this study was to develop and establish an in situ remediation technology coupling nano-schwertmannite/H2O2 process and electrokinetic (EK) process for the removal of phthalates (PAEs) and acetaminophen in river sediments. Test results are given as follows: (1) injection of nano-schwertmannite slurry and H2O2 (collectively, "novel oxidant") into the anode reservoir would yield ·OH radicals that then will be diffused into the sediment compartment and further transported by the electroosmotic flow and/or electrophoresis from the anode end toward the cathode to degrade PAEs

Current state, sources, and potential risk of heavy metals in sediments of Three Gorges Reservoir, China.

Heavy metal (HM) contamination in sediments of Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) is a particularly important issue for the safety of water quality due to the potential threats of metal toxicity to local and downstream human health. Surface sediments from riparian and submerged areas in the entire TGR mainstream were collected in 2014 to investigate the spatial distribution of HMs (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn), identify their possible sources, and assess their potential risk by multiple indices and metal fraction. Results showed that the concentrations of HMs in the sediments increased after the TGR operatio

Untargeted Screening and Distribution of Organo-Bromine Compounds in Sediments of Lake Michigan.

Previously unreported natural and synthetic organo-bromine compounds (NSOBCs) have been found to contribute more than 99% of total organic bromine (TOB) in environmental matrices. We recently developed a novel untargeted method (data-independent precursor isolation and characteristic fragment, DIPIC-Frag) and identified ∼2000 NSOBCs in two sediments from Lake Michigan. In this study, this method was used to investigate the distributions of these NSOBCs in 23 surficial samples and 24 segments of a sediment core from Lake Michigan. NSOBCs were detected in all 23 surficial samples and exhibited 1

Identification and characterization of the antifungal substances of a novel Streptomyces cavourensis NA4.

A new actinomycete strain NA4 was isolated from a deep-sea sediment collected from the South China Sea and showed promising antifungal activities against soilborne fungal pathogens. It was identified as Streptomyces cavourensis by morphological, physiological, and phylogenetic analyses based on its 16S rRNA gene sequence. The main antifungal components were isolated and identified from the fermentation culture as bafilomycins B1 and C1. These compounds exhibited significant antifungal activities and a broad antifungal spectrum. The results suggest that the Streptomyces cavourensis NA4 and bafi

Mercury methylation in sediments of a Brazilian mangrove under different vegetation covers and salinities.

The presence and formation of methylmercury (MMHg), a highly toxic form of Hg, in mangrove ecosystems is poorly studied. Therefore the aim of this study was to evaluate mercury methylation potentials in sediment, litter and root samples (Avicennia shaueriana and Spartina alterniflora) from different regions of a mangrove ecosystem, as well as the influence of salinity on methylation. Sediment was sampled under different depths and in mangrove regions with different plant covers and salinities. All samples were incubated with (203)Hg and MM(203)Hg was extracted and measured by liquid scintillat

Influence of a chlor-alkali superfund site on mercury bioaccumulation in periphyton and low-trophic level fauna.

In Berlin, New Hampshire, USA, the Androscoggin River flows adjacent to a former chlor-alkali facility that is a US Environmental Protection Agency Superfund site and source of mercury (Hg) to the river. The present study was conducted to determine the fate and bioaccumulation of methylmercury (MeHg) to lower trophic-level taxa in the river. Surface sediment directly adjacent to the source showed significantly elevated MeHg (10-40× increase, mean ± standard deviation [SD]: 20.1 ± 24.8 ng g(-1) dry wt) and total mercury (THg; 10-30× increase, mean ± SD: 2045 ± 2669 ng g(-1) dry wt) compared wit

Mercury methylation in high and low-sulphate impacted wetland ponds within the prairie pothole region of North America.

Using enriched stable (201)Hg injections into intact sediment cores, we provide the first reported Hg methylation potential rate constants (km) in prairie wetland ponds (0.016-0.17 d(-1)). Our km values were similar to other freshwater wetlands and did not differ in ponds categorized with high compared to low surface water concentrations of sulphate. Sites with high sulphate had higher proportions of methylmercury (MeHg) in sediment (2.9 ± 1.6% vs. 1.0 ± 0.3%) and higher surface water MeHg concentrations (1.96 ± 1.90 ng L(-1)vs. 0.56 ± 0.55 ng L(-1)). Risk assessment of heavy metal contamination in sediments of a tropical lake.

The risk assessment of heavy metal contamination was carried out in sediments of an urban tropical lake system (Akkulam-Veli) under threat from rapid unplanned urbanization and poor sewage management. Heavy metals were selected due to their persistent and bioaccumulative nature. Sequential extraction of the metals was carried out to resolve the sediments to their component phases. Well-established models were employed for risk analysis. The two pathways of contamination-ingestion and dermal contact-were considered for assessing risk. Risk Assessment Code of each metal was determined based on t
