PURPOSE: To describe common ocular surface lesions that clinically mimic ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) and provide practical guidance for their accurate identification using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT).
METHODS: We thoroughly reviewed various ocular surface lesions, categorizing them based on etiology. Diagnostic features on clinical examination, histopathology, and characteristic imaging findings on AS-OCT were critically assessed.
RESULTS: Numerous conditions can resemble OSSN, including corneal pannus, pseudopterygium, herpes simplex keratitis, conjun

Cardiac involvement in tuberculosis mainly affects the pericardium, with the myocardium being rarely involved. Coronary stent infection in patients with tuberculosis is rarely described. Myocardial involvement in tuberculosis can lead to complications such as ventricular granuloma, or dysrhythmias. Here, we present the case of a 60-year-old gentleman who had a history of multiple percutaneous coronary angioplasty, and pericardiectomy for constrictive tubercular pericardial effusion. Nine months after surgery, he presented with a left ventricular pseudoaneurysm and multiple stent fractures in t

Kaposi's sarcoma is the most common AIDS-associated malignancy. Kaposi's sarcoma in the oral cavity and oropharynx present as a macular, papular, or nodular lesion on the palate, gingiva, or tongue which may look pink, reddish, or purplish. Kaposi's sarcoma of the tonsils is relatively less common compared with other sites in the oral cavity and oropharynx. We report a case of Kaposi's sarcoma of tonsil with profuse bleeding requiring emergency tracheostomy to protect the airway followed by tonsillectomy to control the bleeding. Our initial diagnosis was hemangioma or a pyogenic granuloma. The

Pediatric-type follicular lymphoma is an uncommon B-cell lymphoma that primarily involves the lymph nodes of the head and neck of children and young adults. Ocular involvement is rare, with only 5 well-documented cases in the literature, all occurring in the conjunctiva. The authors describe a 20-year-old African American man with enlarging bilateral medial conjunctival nodules. Excisional biopsy of the larger left conjunctival lesion, clinically presumed to be pyogenic granuloma, revealed pediatric-type follicular lymphoma composed of expansile follicles with germinal centers containing mitot

Erythematous lesions of the oral mucosa are common and can reflect a variety of conditions, ranging from benign reactive or immunologically-mediated disorders to malignant disease. Together with vascular abnormalities, which can vary from reddish to bluish-purple in color, the differential diagnosis for erythematous oral mucosal change is quite diverse. This review focuses on salient clinical features and histopathologic findings of selected conditions which clinically present as red or vascular-like oral mucosal alterations, including oral vascular malformations and neoplasms, pyogenic granul

Sonography can be used in the management of pediatric soft-tissue vascular anomalies for diagnosing, for assessing lesion extent and for evaluating complications and response to therapy. The sonographic technique includes a combination of gray-scale imaging with color and spectral Doppler techniques. However the interpretation of the sonographic findings requires correlation with the clinical findings, some of which can be easily obtained at the time of scanning. This has to be combined with the use of appropriate nomenclature and the most updated classification in order to categorize these ch

A 32-year-old male presented with a right thumb lesion of 11-month duration. A clinical diagnosis of pyogenic granuloma was entertained but the lesion failed to respond to conservative therapy and eventually necessitated amputation of his thumb. MRI of the right thumb showed an ill-defined, heterogeneously enhancing, infiltrating mass within the dorsal soft tissues abutting the distal phalanx and measuring 4.2 × 2.4 × 0.7 cm. Histologically, the tumor was composed of a high-grade osteosarcoma with a chondrosarcomatous component localized within the underlying bone and a more superficial spindl

ANAMNESIS AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 83-year old patient with "myelodysplastic / myeloproliferative neoplasia", type chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML), presented at our clinic with an intermittent bleeding, growing tumour located at the glabella. The tumour occurred after a trauma, and thus the suspected diagnosis was pyogenic granuloma. In the context of outpatient care, a severe and persistent bleeding occurred, so that the patient was hospitalized. EXAMINATIONS AND DIAGNOSES: Histopathological analyses of the excized tumour nodule revealed specific cutaneous leukemic infiltrates. Laborat

Case 1 A 60-year-old Chinese man presented to the dermatology clinic with an asymptomatic, 0.5 × 0.5-cm erythematous papule on the penile shaft for a 2-year duration (Figure 1a). His medical problems consisted only of well-controlled hypothyroidism and hypertension. The initial clinical diagnoses considered were pyogenic granuloma or condyloma accuminatum. The excisional biopsy revealed a polypoidal lesion entirely covered by epidermis, with a proliferation of cuboidal, basaloid cells, consistent with an eccrine poroma (Figure 1b). Case 2 A 28-year-old Chinese man presented with an asymptomati

With a prevalence of 10–12% infantile hemangiomas (IH) represent the most common skin tumor in infancy. They are characterized by a sequence of growth and, in 90%, spontaneous regression. Special manifestations of IH include hemangiomatosis, congenital hemangioma (RICH/NICH), reticular and segmental hemangiomas (PHACE, PELVIS/SACRAL syndrome). The latter represent a transition between vascular tumor and vascular malformation. Important differential diagnoses of IH include pyogenic granuloma (PG) and hemangioendothelioma (HAE) of which PG is a common, benign vascular tumor with a predilection f

The use in the past of an imprecise terminology to designate vascular tumors has contributed to its incorrect diagnosis, and as a consequence, to inadequate treatment. In childhood, different types of vascular tumors may be present. Hemangiomas of infancy are by far the most frequent, and other less common types are congenital hemangiomas (rapidly involuting or RICH and non-involuting or NICH), kaposiform hemangioendothelioma, angioblastoma or tufted angioma and pyogenic granuloma. The correct knowledge and diagnosis, always in a multidisciplinary setting, is required to reduce incorrect diagn

The association between hepatic abscesses and schistosomiasis mansoni was confirmed by clinical and experimental studies. Other parasites may cause systemic immunologic changes and local structural alterations in the affected organs that can facilitate the seeding of these areas by bacteria. Tropical pyomyositis, pyogenic liver and renal abscesses are frequent diseases in tropical areas. The visceral larva migrans syndrome is caused by the presence, in the human body, of larvae of worms that have other animals as their definitive host, most commonly being caused by Toxocara canis. The authors report an example of pleomorphic fibroma in a unique site: the subungual space of the thumb. A 54-year-old man presented with paronychia and markedly thickened hyperkeratotic nail. The nail plate was removed, and an exophytic, red, friable, granulation tissue-like lesion was revealed subungually. The lesion was diagnosed clinically as pyogenic granuloma. Excisional biopsy was performed. Histologically, the lesion showed a hypocellular fibroma with myxoid areas and dilated blood vessels. Interspersed with ordinary appearing fibroblasts, there were bizarre, atypical fibroblasts with

The possible clinical value of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) has been assessed prospectively in 60 patients presenting with cutaneous lesions. The cytological diagnosis in each case has been compared with the clinical diagnosis and biopsy result. The principal potential use appears to be the rapid confirmation of the clinical diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma to allow immediate referral for radiotherapy or plastic surgery. FNAC could also prove useful when the clinical diagnosis of malignant melanoma is in doubt and primary diagnostic excision is difficult or disfiguring. Accurate dis

A total of 834 consecutive biopsy specimens from the gingiva and 448 from the alveolar mucosa were examined to see if differences in structure and function are reflected in categories and frequency of diagnoses. In both regions, inflammatory/reactive hyperplasia accounted for about 85% of the lesions and neoplasia for most of the remainder. Pyogenic granuloma was the most common lesion in the gingiva (23.6%) and fibrous hyperplasia in the alveolar mucosa (23.2%). The ratio of benign to malignant neoplasms was greater in the gingiva (10:1) than in the alveolar mucosa (almost 1:1). Benign tumors

Eight patients had plantar growths that were usually irregularly shaped, sharply outlined, verrucous, and several centimeters in greatest dimension. Clinical diagnoses included viral wart, deep mycosis, pyogenic granuloma, amelanotic melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and eccrine poroma. The median age of the patients, and duration of the growth, were 52 and 16 years, respectively. Therapeutic modalities other than total excision were ineffective. The tumor, derived from surface epidermis, was composed of masses of pale-staining benign-appearing prickle cells, deeply invaginated by thick, compact

The dermatoscopic characteristics of shiny white structures (SWS) in malignant skin tumours are well described, but data on benign skin neoplasms are scarce. To evaluate the dermatoscopic features of SWS in common benign tumours, we reviewed our database for histopathologically confirmed cases. Dermatoscopic images were evaluated for the presence of any type of SWS. Images with SWS were further analysed for their quantity, distribution and shape. Of 2420 evaluated benign tumours, 357 (14.8%) displayed SWS. The highest frequencies were observed in pyogenic granuloma (n = 62/100; 62%), angioma (

BACKGROUND: This study intended to illustrate a rare case of pyogenic granuloma (PG) in retinal vein occlusion (RVO) patient after dexamethasone (DEX) implant therapy.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 58-year-old female who underwent DEX implant therapy a month ago due to RVO presented with a mass in her right eye. Anterior segment analysis revealed a slowly enlarging, round, fleshy vascular mass indicating PG located at the injection site. Although surgical excision was planned, because of the Covid-19 pandemic, a patient could not come for surgery. Ocular examination revealed a spontaneous PG disappeara

Cutaneous metastases by solid malignancies often signify advanced disease and portend severely limited survival. Appropriate diagnosis of these lesions is particularly hampered when they closely resemble primary cutaneous tumors. In this article, we present two diagnostically challenging cases of metastatic lesions to the scalp bearing striking histologic resemblance to primary cutaneous neoplasms. One case of a metastatic urothelial carcinoma showed epidermotropism as well as histologic and immunohistochemical features virtually indistinguishable from those of a poorly differentiated squamous
