Preferences of Young Black Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men Regarding Integration of HIV and Mental Health Care Services.

Optimization of mental health service use is critical to HIV care engagement among young Black gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (YB-GBMSM). Clinic-level interventions to integrate HIV and mental health services have been proposed; however, patient perspectives on such care models are often lacking. We conducted a mixed-methods study consisting of surveys (N = 100) and qualitative in-depth interviews (n = 15) with YB-GBMSM recruited from two Ryan White-funded HIV clinics in Atlanta, Georgia. Most participants (70%) agreed that integration of HIV and mental health services was

Prevalence and Correlates of Self-Rated Successful Aging Among Older Women Living With HIV.

BACKGROUND: Despite marked gains in longevity attributable to antiretroviral therapy (ART), older women living with HIV (OWLH) experience substantial health challenges, and few studies addressed whether they can achieve successful aging (SA). This is among the first studies examining prevalence and psychosocial correlates of self-rated SA (SRSA) among OWLH and women at risk of HIV. METHODS: The sample included 386 OWLH and 137 HIV-seronegative women enrolled in the Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS) who were aged 50 years and older and participated in the "From Surviving to Thriving" (FROST

Nano-Medicine as a Newly Emerging Approach to Combat Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

BACKGROUND: Human Immuno deficiency Virus (HIV) infection has attained pandemic level due to its complexity on both the HIV infection cycle and on the targets for drug delivery. This limits medication and consequently requires prominent and promising drug delivery systems to be invented. Notably, various nanomaterial have been studied to enhance effective delivery of the antiretroviral drugs for HIV prevention, diagnosis and cure. Some of these nanomaterials are liposomes, dendrimers, inorganic nanoparticles (NPs), polymeric micelles, natural and synthetic polymers. OBJECTIVE: The present stu

Ethical implications of HIV self-testing: the game is far from being over.

The use of combined Anti-Retroviral Therapy (cART) has been revolutionary in the history of the fight against HIV-AIDS, with remarkable reductions in HIV associated morbidity and mortality. Knowing one's HIV status early, not only increases chances of early initiation of effective, affordable and available treatment, but has lately been associated with an important potential to reduce disease transmission. A public health priority lately has been to lay emphasis on early and wide spread HIV screening. With many countries having already in the market over the counter self-testing kits, the ethi

HIV-infected microglia mediate cathepsin B-induced neurotoxicity.

HIV-1-infected mononuclear phagocytes release soluble factors that affect the homeostasis in tissue. HIV-1 can prompt metabolic encephalopathy with the addition of neuronal dysfunction and apoptosis. Recently, we reported that HIV-1 enhances the expression and secretion of bioactive cathepsin B in monocyte-derived macrophages, ultimately contributing to neuronal apoptosis. In this research, we asked if microglia respond to HIV infection similarly by modifying the expression, secretion, and neurotoxic potential of cathepsin B and determined the in vivo relevance of these findings. HIV-1ADA-infe

Reduced sTWEAK and increased sCD163 levels in HIV-infected patients: modulation by antiretroviral treatment, HIV replication and HCV co-infection.

BACKGROUND: Patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease due to increased inflammation and persistent immune activation. CD163 is a macrophage scavenger receptor that is involved in monocyte-macrophage activation in HIV-infected patients. CD163 interacts with TWEAK, a member of the TNF superfamily. Circulating levels of sTWEAK and sCD163 have been previously associated with cardiovascular disease, but no previous studies have fully analyzed their association with HIV. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze circulating

Challenges to re-enrolling perinatally HIV-infected and HIV-exposed but uninfected children into a prospective cohort study: strategies for locating and recruiting hard-to-reach families.

Children infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are living longer. Studies aimed at understanding the health and well-being of these children as they age into adolescence are enhanced by research designs that include appropriate comparison groups. HIV-exposed but uninfected children are one such comparison group; however, recruitment of this comparison group is challenging because uninfected children may no longer be followed at tertiary care centres, and some may be in foster care or no longer living with their biological parents. This paper describes the recruitment methods, sa

Cocaine and sigma-1 receptors modulate HIV infection, chemokine receptors, and the HPA axis in the huPBL-SCID model.

Cocaine is associated with an increased risk for, and progression of, clinical disease associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. A human xenograft model, in which human peripheral blood mononuclear cells were implanted into severe combined immunodeficiency mice (huPBL-SCID) and infected with a HIV reporter virus, was used to investigate the biological interactions between cocaine and HIV infection. Systemic administration of cocaine (5 mg/kg/d) significantly increased the percentage of HIV-infected PBL (two- to threefold) and viral load (100- to 300-fold) in huPBL-SCID mice

Changes in HIV-1 incidence in heroin users in Guangxi Province, China.

Guangxi Province, China recently experienced an outbreak of HIV-1 infection among heroin users. We studied HIV-1 incidence rates and associated risk factors for HIV-1 infection among heroin users residing in Pingxiang City. A total of 318 heroin users were followed from February 1998 through January 1999 (median follow-up: 8.1 months). Of these, 130 were prospectively followed from January through September 1999 (median follow-up: 8.3 months). HIV-1 and hepatitis C virus (HCV) incidence rates for each period were calculated. A generalized estimating equation approach was implemented to identif

B cell responses to HIV and the development of human monoclonal antibodies.

In this review B cell responses in HIV-infected individuals are summarized together with the techniques used to date to produce human monoclonals to HIV and the properties of these antibodies. Profound disturbances in B cell responses are apparent both in vivo and in vitro. While there is evidence in vivo of marked polyclonal B cell activation, primary and secondary antibody responses are impaired. Similarly these cells exhibit spontaneous immunoglobulin secretion upon in vitro culture but do not readily respond to B cell mitogens and recall antigens including HIV. Furthermore, certain of thes

HIV-Specific vs Universal Immunization Coverage in US Children with HIV: A Multi-Site Study.

BACKGROUND: Immunization recommendations for children living with HIV (CLWH) differ from the general pediatric population due to increased risk of vaccine-preventable diseases. Adherence to these specific recommendations remains understudied in the United States. We assessed HIV-specific versus universal immunization coverage across multiple pediatric HIV clinics. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, cross-sectional study of CLWH (0-18 years) receiving HIV care as of May 1, 2021, at 6 US pediatric HIV clinics. We evaluated coverage for universal and HIV-specific vaccines, including those th

Defective IL-17 production is associated with reduced IL-1β levels in response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis in HIV+ children with latent tuberculosis infection.

INTRODUCTION: Children with latent tuberculosis (LTBI) infection are more susceptible to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) disease than adults with LTBI. HIV infection in children significantly enhances the development of LTBI into active TB due to the immature immune system. However, information about the immune responses to Mtb in HIV+ children with LTBI is limited. METHODS: In this study, we compared the immune cell phenotypes of freshly isolated PBMCs as well as Mtb antigen specific cytokine and chemokine production in HIV-LTBI+ and HIV+LTBI+ children. We also identified the factors respon

Impact of Tamoxifen on Vorinostat-Induced Human Immunodeficiency Virus Expression in Women on Antiretroviral Therapy: AIDS Clinical Trials Group A5366, The MOXIE Trial.

BACKGROUND: Biological sex and the estrogen receptor alpha (ESR1) modulate human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) activity. Few women have enrolled in clinical trials of latency reversal agents (LRAs); their effectiveness in women is unknown. We hypothesized that ESR1 antagonism would augment induction of HIV expression by the LRA vorinostat. METHODS: AIDS Clinical Trials Group A5366 enrolled 31 virologically suppressed, postmenopausal women on antiretroviral therapy. Participants were randomized 2:1 to receive tamoxifen (arm A, TAMOX/VOR) or observation (arm B, VOR) for 5 weeks followed by 2 dos

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 in Ireland: phylogenetic evidence for risk group-specific subepidemics.

HIV genetic diversity may have an impact on viral pathogenesis, transmission, response to treatment, and vaccine development. Public health surveillance that monitors the frequency and variety of HIV subtypes in a particular region or patient group is vital to successfully control the pandemic. We present the first comprehensive report on HIV diversity in Ireland. This study comprised all new HIV-1 diagnoses that were confirmed in the National Virus Reference Laboratory, University College Dublin, from January 2004 to December 2008. HIV 1 protease and reverse transcriptase sequences were gener

The host protein cyclophilin A restricts nuclear entry of HIV-1 mutants by reducing the elasticity of the viral capsid.

Binding of the host protein cyclophilin A (CypA) to the viral capsid exerts multiple effects on HIV-1 infection, including enhancement of reverse transcription, stabilization of the capsid, and promotion of nuclear entry. CypA can also inhibit infection of selected HIV-1 mutants by a poorly understood mechanism. Using atomic force microscopy methods, we previously showed that HIV-1 cores are highly elastic and that mutants with reduced capsid elasticity are impaired for nuclear entry and infection of nondividing cells. Here we demonstrate that binding of CypA to the capsids of such mutants inh

Acceptability and perceived usefulness of the MyPEEPS mobile app for young transgender men.

Young transgender men (YTM) remain underserved by HIV prevention efforts. It is estimated that 3% of transgender men have an HIV diagnosis despite a rate of only 0.4% among the U.S. population, and young people account for more than half of new HIV diagnoses. We conducted in-depth interviews with a sample of participants who used MyPEEPS YTM to assess acceptability and perceived usefulness of the app. Qualitative analysis of the interviews was guided by the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology and allowed us to identify app benefits including HIV prevention reinforcement and faci

Cone-shaped HIV-1 capsids are transported through intact nuclear pores.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) remains a major health threat. Viral capsid uncoating and nuclear import of the viral genome are critical for productive infection. The size of the HIV-1 capsid is generally believed to exceed the diameter of the nuclear pore complex (NPC), indicating that capsid uncoating has to occur prior to nuclear import. Here, we combined correlative light and electron microscopy with subtomogram averaging to capture the structural status of reverse transcription-competent HIV-1 complexes in infected T cells. We demonstrated that the diameter of the NPC in cellulo is
