OBJECTIVE: To develop a self-administered short questionnaire to assess patient satisfaction with medical treatment for hand eczema (dermatitis) with good psychometric properties.
METHOD: The content of the questionnaire was determined on the basis of clinical consultation with groups of patients, from studying the existing instruments, and from discussions with a panel of seven experts. A first draft version containing 38 items organised in six dimensions was tested on a pilot sample of patients to assess its legibility. The extended version was then tested on a sample of 217 patients of bot

BACKGROUND: Nondermatophyte moulds (NDM) may be found as aetiological agents or as contaminants in onychomycosis. The classic and most used criteria for the diagnosis of NDM are those established by English in 1976.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this article is to re-evaluate the laboratory criteria for the diagnosis of NDM in onychomycosis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with suspected NDM of the nail underwent five consecutive examinations by both KOH and mycological culture; at the first visit, three samples from the affected nail were taken and were examined separately. Later those patients und

OBJECTIVE: We describe the ultrasound appearance of knuckle pads.
DESIGN AND PATIENTS: Retrospective analysis of imaging in a series of five patients initially referred for evaluation of periarticular soft-tissue swelling of the hands involving the dorsum of the PIP and MP joints. Two patients had associated Dupuytren's contractures. Ultrasound and radiographs of the hands in all patients were reviewed and correlated with clinical history and physical exams.
RESULTS: Radiographs in four patients demonstrated dorsal soft-tissue thickening. Ultrasound exams showed increased dorsal subcutaneous

Hand dermatitis is a common skin condition that often has a chronic and/or relapsing clinical course. Several clinical forms of hand dermatitis have been described, including contact (i.e., allergic and irritant), hyperkeratotic (i.e., psoriasiform or tylotic), frictional, nummular, atopic, pompholyx (i.e., dyshidrosis), and chronic vesicular hand dermatitis. In the present review, therapeutic options for these types of hand dermatitis are discussed in detail, focusing on treatments for recalcitrant hand dermatitis.

Chemotherapeutic agents are known to cause a myriad of cutaneous side effects that the dermatologist is often called upon to identify and treat. The taxoid drug paclitaxel is commonly used in oncology. To date, there have been few adverse dermatologic effects reported secondary to paclitaxel use. This is in contrast to the related drug docetaxel. We report a case in which paclitaxel caused onycholysis and nail loss in a patient being treated for lung cancer. To our knowledge, this finding has not previously been reported in the American dermatologic literature, though it has been reported in a

A 76-year-old woman presented with a venous leg ulcer 7. Incidentally hemorrhagic macules on hands and fingers and dystrophy of toe and fingernails were noticed. Except for submammary erythema, no further dermatologic signs were shown. Histology of palmar lesions fit with a hemorrhagic lesion of dyskeratosis follicularis in acral skin. During following months actinic induced reddish-brown hyperkeratotic papules appeared on the forehead and in seborrheic and intertriginous areas of the trunk. Papules were most prominent during summer and almost completely resolved in winter. The hemorrhagic var

A 24-year-old white man had a six-month history of nontender nodules on the dorsal aspect of the right hand. The lesions were diagnosed as lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis based on clinical appearance, histopathologic examinations, and fungal culture. Therapy with itraconazole was started. Considerable improvement was recorded after two months, when all of the lesions diminished in size and were no longer nodular in appearance.

Two feet-one hand syndrome is also defined as bilateral plantar tinea pedis with coexistent unilateral tinea manuum. Toenails and fingernails may also be affected and the dermatophyte Trichophyton rubrum is the usual cause. When there is nail involvement, especially of the toenails, treatment with an oral antifungal agent should be considered because topical therapy alone is usually not effective. However, relapses are common. With the advent of new, more effective antifungal drugs such as itraconazole, terbinafine, and fluconazole, it is hoped that this troublesome and recalcitrant disorder m
