Content analysis of homeless smokers' perspectives on established and alternative smoking interventions.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking is 5 times more prevalent among homeless individuals than in the general population, and homeless individuals are disproportionately affected by smoking-related morbidity and mortality. Homeless smokers report interest in changing their smoking behavior; however, established smoking cessation interventions are neither desirable to nor highly effective for most members of this population. The aim of this study was to document homeless smokers' perceptions of established smoking interventions as well as self-generated, alternative smoking interventions to elucidate

Personality as a risk factor for illicit opioid use and a protective factor for illicit opioid dependence.

BACKGROUND: Most studies investigating the role of personality as a risk factor for the development of opioid dependence compare dependent opioid users with healthy controls who never used heroin. In order to understand the potential protective role of personality, it is crucial to compare illicit opioid users who never became dependent with dependent opioid users. AIMS: This study aims to examine the role of personality as a risk factor for opioid use and as a protective factor for the development of opioid dependence. METHODS: Comparing personality factors between three groups: (1) 161 nev

Alterations in white matter microstructure in women recovered from anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: A recent study of ill individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) reported microstructural alterations in white matter integrity including lower fractional anisotropy and higher mean diffusivity. This study was designed to determine whether such alterations exist in long-term recovered AN individuals and to examine potential associations with underlying AN traits. METHOD: Twelve adult women recovered from restricting-type AN and 10 control women were studied using diffusion tensor imaging. RESULTS: Overall, there was no significant fractional anisotropy alteration in recovered AN, in c

From client to co-worker: a case study of the transition to peer work within a multi-disciplinary hepatitis c treatment team in Toronto, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Despite the integration of peer workers into harm reduction services, there is little documentation regarding the experience of this integration or of models in which peers are fully integrated as members of health care teams. The purpose of this study was to gain an in-depth understanding of the transition from client to support worker from the perspective of two individuals who received treatment for hepatitis C at a multi-disciplinary, community-based program, grounded in a harm reduction approach to substance use. METHODS: A participatory case study design was selected. Interv…

How far are we? Assessing progress in hepatitis C response towards the WHO 2030 elimination goals by the civil society monitoring in 25 European countries, period 2020 to 2023.

BACKGROUND: With the advent of direct acting antivirals (DAAs) the World Health Organisation (WHO) adopted global strategy to eliminate hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection by 2030. In Europe, people who inject drugs (PWID) account for the majority of new cases, however testing and treatment remain suboptimal. The aim was to monitor progress in HCV policy and cascade-of-care for PWID, led by the civil society organisations (CSO) that provide harm reduction services for PWID across Europe. METHODS: In period 2020-2023, CSOs representing focal points of Correlation-European Harm Reduction Network …

A Public Health Strategy for the Opioid Crisis.

Drug overdose is now the leading cause of injury death in the United States. Most overdose fatalities involve opioids, which include prescri … allocation, steps to increase safer prescribing, stigma-reduction campaigns, increased spending on harm reduction and treatment, criminal justice policy reform, and regulatory changes related to controlled substances. Focusing on these opportunities provides the greatest chance of making a measured and sustained impact on overdose and related harms.

Injection drug users' experience with and attitudes toward methadone clinics in Denver, CO.

Clients' perceptions and attitudes toward methadone treatment programs are frequently overlooked in substance abuse research. Given the importance of methadone maintenance as a harm-reduction strategy and clients' concerns about treatment, it is essential to understand perceptions and attitudes toward existing programs. Using data from the 2009 National HIV Behavioral Surveillance system with injection drug users in Denver, CO, we evaluated participants' experiences with methadone clinics and examined predictive factors associated with ever being a client of a methadone clinic. Costs of servic

Some law enforcement officers' negative attitudes toward overdose victims are exacerbated following overdose education training.

BACKGROUND: The devastating impact of the current opioid overdose crisis has led to new involvement of law enforcement officers. Training programs have focused on overdose recognition and response without targeting core attitudinal change by covering addiction or harm reduction principles. OBJECTIVES: This study examined the impact of a comprehensive overdose education and naloxone distribution (OEND) training on officers' attitudes toward overdose victims, knowledge of and competence to respond to an opioid overdose, and concerns about using naloxone. The training included the common informa…

An Analysis of Drug Use-Related Curriculum Documents for Paramedic Students in British Columbia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Paramedics attend an unprecedented number of drug poisoning events daily in British Columbia (BC), Canada, due to the ongoing public health crisis related to an increasingly toxic and unregulated street supply of illicit drugs. Paramedics have the potential to support alternative models of care to reduce harm, but their perspectives toward harm reduction initiatives are polarized. Understanding the drug-related substance use content in paramedic curriculum documents is important for deploying effective harm-mitigating programs. The aim of this study was to determine how il…
