Progressive Cardiac Metabolic Defects Accompany Diastolic and Severe Systolic Dysfunction in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rat Hearts.

Background Cardiac metabolic abnormalities are present in heart failure. Few studies have followed metabolic changes accompanying diastolic and systolic heart failure in the same model. We examined metabolic changes during the development of diastolic and severe systolic dysfunction in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Methods and Results We serially measured myocardial glucose uptake rates with dynamic 2-[18F] fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose positron emission tomography in vivo in 9-, 12-, and 18-month-old SHR and Wistar Kyoto rats. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging determined systolic functio

Distribution and role of peripheral arterial chemoreceptors in cardio-respiratory control of the South American rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus).

Peripheral arterial chemoreceptors monitor the levels of arterial blood gases and adjust ventilation and perfusion to meet metabolic demands. These chemoreceptors are present in all vertebrates studied to date but have not been described fully in reptiles other than turtles. The goals of this study were to (1) identify functional chemosensory areas in the South American rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus), (2) determine the neurochemical content of putative chemosensory cells in these areas and (3) determine the role each area plays in ventilatory and cardiovascular control. To this end, rattlesna

Factors associated with mortality after proximal femoral fracture.

Proximal femoral fractures are a serious complication, especially for elderly patients. Therefore, we have aimed to answer the following research question: What is the postfracture mortality rate in the elderly population and what are associated risk factors? For this, proximal femoral fractures that occurred between 1 January 2009 and 31 December 2019 were identified from the Medicare Physician Service Records database. The Kaplan-Meier (KM) method with the Fine and Gray subdistribution adaptation was used to determine rates of mortality. A semiparametric Cox regression model was applied, inc

The safety of flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing with sensory testing (FEESST): an analysis of 500 consecutive evaluations.

We assessed the safety of a new office or bedside method of evaluating both the motor and sensory components of swallowing called flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing with sensory testing (FEESST). FEESST combines the established endoscopic evaluation of swallowing with a technique that determines laryngopharyngeal sensory discrimination thresholds by endoscopically delivering air-pulse stimuli to the mucosa innervated by the superior laryngeal nerve. Endoscopic assessment of laryngopharyngeal sensory capacity followed by endoscopic visualization of deglutition was prospectively perfor

The HNO donor Angeli's salt offers potential haemodynamic advantages over NO or dobutamine in ischaemia-reperfusion injury in the rat heart ex vivo.

Available inotropic pharmacotherapy for acute heart failure (HF) remains largely ineffective at ameliorating marked impairments in contractile function. Nitroxyl (HNO), the redox sibling of NO•, has recently attracted interest as a therapeutic approach for acute HF. We now compare the impact of ischaemia-reperfusion (I-R) injury on acute haemodynamic responsiveness of the HNO donor, Angeli's salt (AS), to that of NO and dobutamine. Dose-response curves to bolus doses of AS, diethylamine NONOate (DEA/NO, both 0.001-μmol) and dobutamine (0.1-100 nmol) were performed in rat isolated hearts, follo

Postmortem cardiomegaly and echocardiographic measurements of left ventricular size and function in children infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. The Prospective P2C2 HIV Multicenter Study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiomegaly, seen postmortem in over 50% of HIV-infected children, may occur in the absence of clinical or histopathologic cardiac disease. Premortem echocardiography has also demonstrated clinical and subclinical cardiac disease, including increased left ventricular mass (LVM) and functional abnormalities. No studies have compared these echocardiographic measures of heart size and function with postmortem findings in this population. We sought to determine the postmortem prevalence, clinicopathologic relationships and importance of cardiomegaly in HIV-infected children. METHODS:

Naloxone fails to antagonize thiopental anesthesia.

A study was undertaken to determine the effect in man of naloxone on the central nervous system depression produced by IV thiopental. Eight normal volunteers were given 5 mg/kg thiopental IV. On a separate occasion the same 8 volunteers were given 50 microgram/kg naloxone IV 5 minutes prior to 5 mg/kg thiopental. Naloxone had no significant effect on the rate of return of consciousness following administration of thiopental. Naloxone also had no significant effect on the responses of blood pressure, heart rate, or respiratory rate to thiopental.

Cytochrome oxidase repair during treatment of copper deficiency: relation to mitochondrial turnover.

The repair of cytochrome oxidase depletion during the treatment of copper deficiency was studied in the rat. The purpose of this study was to distinguish the role of new cell production from the possibly more specific role of mitochondrial turnover in determining the rate of this repair. In rats on a copper-deficient regimen until 2.5-3 months of age, activities of cytochrome oxidase expressed as per cent of control were as follows: skeletal muscle (quadratus lumborum), 18%; heart, 27%; liver, 34%; and intestinal mucosa, 34%. After 2-3 days of dietary supplementation with cupric acetate, repai

Effect of resting heart rate on coronary collateral formation in patients with chronic total occlusion: resting heart rate and collaterals.

AIM: In this study our aim was to determine the effect of resting heart rate (HR) on the development of coronary collateral circulation (CCC) in patients with chronic total occlusion (CTO). METHODS: A total of 219 patients who had CTO on their coronary angiography were divided into two groups according to their collateral status. CCC was graded by Rentrop Classification. RESULTS: Patients with poor collaterals had significantly higher resting HR (79±13.9 vs 74.3±10.5, p=0.005) compared to patients with well collaterals. According to backward logistic regression analyses low HR (OR:0.974, p=0

Enhanced detection of sleep apnoea using heart-rate, respiration effort and oxygen saturation derived from a photoplethysmography sensor.

This paper presents a study on identifying sleep apnoea using the photoplethysmography (PPG) measurements, which is obtained from the SpO2 sensor. Using a database of polysomnogram (PSG) records of 52 patients, the heart rate and breathing effort information was derived from the PPG measurements and then features are extracted and processed by a classifier to detect one-minute epochs of sleep apnoea. The ground truth labels for the epochs were determined by trained technicians using the full PSG signal. Pulse oximetry (SpO2) measurements from the same sensor are also used in the classification

Electroencephalographic study in acute rheumatic carditis.

Electroencephalographic studies were done in rheumatic fever patients in order to determine the distribution of normal and abnormal EEG patterns in different clinical forms. The duration of EEG abnormalities related to rheumatic activity was compared with the duration of increased sedimentation rate and tachycardia. Rheumatic fever cases were divided into four groups: (1) acute active rheumatic carditis, (2) acute polyarthritis without carditis, (3) nonactive old rheumatic valvular heart disease, and (4) Sydenham's chorea. EEG findings were within normal limits in acute polyarthritis and in no

Effect of cardiac exposure by median sternotomy on atrial fibrillation cycle length.

BACKGROUND: Epicardial mapping is a powerful tool that has enabled us to gain insight into the electrical phenomena perpetuating atrial fibrillation and has guided the design of surgical and catheter-based therapeutic strategies. However, epicardial data are acquired during abnormal physiological conditions; the patients are anaesthetized, their chests opened, dislocating the heart and exposing it to air of room temperature, and the autonomic tone is modulated due to the surgery. The effect of intra-operative conditions on atrial electrophysiological properties have not been investigated befor

Increased heart rate fragmentation in those with Williams-Beuren syndrome suggests nonautonomic mechanistic contributors to sudden death risk.

Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) is a rare genetic condition caused by a chromosomal microdeletion at 7q11.23. It is a multisystem disorder characterized by distinct facies, intellectual disability, and supravalvar aortic stenosis (SVAS). Those with WBS are at increased risk of sudden death, but mechanisms underlying this remain poorly understood. We recently demonstrated autonomic abnormalities in those with WBS that are associated with increased susceptibility to arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death (SCD). A recently introduced method for heart rate variability (HRV) analysis called "heart rate
