HIV-1 drug resistance and genetic transmission networks among patients with sexually transmitted HIV in Ningxia, China.

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, sexual transmission has become a dominant source of new HIV-1 infection in China. However, very few studies have been conducted to characterize the two sexual transmissions, homosexual and heterosexual transmission. This study was conducted to better understand the relationship between genotypes, drug resistance, and molecular transmission networks in two groups of sexually transmitted HIV-1 in Ningxia, China. METHODS: Plasma samples were collected from sexually transmitted HIV/AIDS patients in Ningxia between 2020 and 2021 for RNA extraction followed by HIV-

Interest in and Preference for Long-Acting Injectable Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Among Men Who Have Sex With Men, Trans* Individuals, and Cisgender Heterosexual Women: A Global Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Long-acting injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (LAI-PrEP) offers potentials for expanding PrEP coverage and improving public health outcomes. This study synthesizes evidence on the prevalence and determinants of interest in and preference for LAI-PrEP among men who have sex with men (MSM), trans* individuals, and heterosexual women. METHODS: We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis building on quantitative studies from a previous review and new studies published in PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase up to December 31, 2023. We used a random-effects meta-analysis to p

The origin and dissemination of HIV-1 subtype B on Hainan Island, South China, 2007-2024.

BACKGROUND: HIV-1 subtype B, introduced to mainland China at an early stage, rapidly spread among commercial plasma donors and heterosexuals (HETs) during the 1990s. It was first identified in Hainan, which has a population of 10 million, in 2007. Nevertheless, there is a paucity of data about the molecular-epidemiological characteristics, spatial origins, and transmission patterns of this strain on the island of China. METHODS: Pol sequences for HIV-1 subtype B from Hainan Island (2007-2024) were obtained from our research and global databases. An analysis of phylogenetic data, molecular clo

Identifying priority populations for HIV interventions using acquisition and transmission indicators: a combined analysis of 15 mathematical models from ten African countries.

BACKGROUND: Characterising disparities in HIV infection across populations by gender, age, and HIV risk is key information to guide intervention priorities. We aimed to assess how indicators measuring HIV acquisitions, transmissions, or potential long-term infections influence estimates of the contribution of different populations to new infections, including key populations (including female sex workers, their clients, men who have sex with men). METHODS: In this mathematical model comparison analysis, we evaluated four indicators using nine models representing 15 different settings across A

Impact of national commissioning of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) on equity of access in England: a PrEP-to-need ratio investigation.

OBJECTIVES: HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly effective in preventing HIV acquisition. In England, NHS availability was limited to participants of the PrEP Impact Trial until late 2020. Some key populations at greater risk of HIV were under-represented in the trial suggesting inequities in trial PrEP access. We used the PrEP-to-need ratio (PnR; number of PrEP users divided by new HIV diagnoses) to investigate whether PrEP access improved following routine commissioning in October 2020 and identify populations most underserved by PrEP. METHODS: Aggregated numbers of people receivin

Sexual orientation and gender identity measures and viral suppression for people living with HIV: a protocol for a population-based cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: The measure of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data in electronic health records (EHR) has been critical for addressing health disparities and inequalities, especially for HIV care. Given that gender and sexual minorities (eg, transgender, men who have sex with men and intersex) are key groups in people living with HIV (PLWH), SOGI data can facilitate a more accurate understanding about the HIV outcomes (eg, viral suppression) among this key group and then lead to tailored therapeutic services. The two-step SOGI collection method as an emerging gender measurement ca

Public health response to Mpox: Safeguarding vulnerable Key Populations and People Living with HIV in Zanzibar.

Mpox, caused by the Monkeypox virus (MPXV), has emerged as a significant global public health concern, particularly affecting vulnerable populations. The recent outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is the largest recorded, driven by the highly virulent clade 1 strain. Transmission has shifted from animal contact to primarily sexual contact among Key Populations (KPs) such as Sex Workers (SW) and Men who have Sex with Men (MSM). In Zanzibar, where HIV prevalence is significantly higher among Key Populations, People Living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (PLHIV) are at increa

Examining sexual identity stability and change over time and associations with tobacco use in a nationally representative US sample.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic research has found sexual minority identifying individuals are disproportionately burdened by tobacco use and tobacco use disorder (TUD). However, these studies often conceptualize sexual identity as time-invariant. This study examined sexual identity over time and whether a transition to a sexual minority identity was associated with tobacco outcomes. METHODS: This study used data from Waves 1-4 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (2013/14-2016/18) study (adolescents and adults aged ≥ 14 years; n = 26,553). We examined associations of sexual identity

Implementing Preexposure Prophylaxis for HIV Prevention in a Statewide Correctional System in the United States.

HIV disproportionately affects populations experiencing incarceration. Preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective approach to preventing HIV acquisition among populations at increased risk of acquiring HIV. Yet few, if any, efforts have been made to offer PrEP in correctional settings. Beginning in November 2019, the Rhode Island Department of Corrections (RIDOC) implemented a systemwide PrEP initiation program with linkage to PrEP care in the community upon reentry. Incarcerated individuals identified as being potentially at increased risk of HIV acquisition during standard clinical scree

Sexual orientation differences among men in a randomized clinical trial of extended-release naltrexone and bupropion for methamphetamine use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine use disorder (MethUD) disproportionately affects men who have sex exclusively with men or with men and women (collectively MSM/W), compared to men who have sex with women (MSW). This study is the first MethUD medication trial to compare treatment effect for these groups, hypothesizing that extended-release injectable naltrexone 380mg every 3 weeks plus oral extended-release bupropion 450mg daily would be less effective for MSM/W than MSW. METHODS: Data come from men (N = 246) in a multi-site, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial with sequential parall

Missed Opportunities for HIV Testing and PrEP Education in a High-risk Population at a Safety-net Health Care System.

The U.S. Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative was launched in 2019 with the goal of reducing new HIV infections by 90% by 2030. In this retrospective chart review in 2019, we determined the incidence of HIV testing and PrEP counseling among patients without known HIV who were diagnosed with gonorrhea or chlamydia in a safety-net health care system. Our results showed that 58% of positive gonorrhea and chlamydia tests had a follow-up HIV test within 90 days and 19% of individuals testing positive for gonorrhea received PrEP education within 180 days. Initial care in an emergency department and fe

Demystifying Ocular Syphilis - A Major Review.

Syphilis, caused by the spirochaete, Treponema pallidum, continues to be a public health challenge globally with its rates steadily increasing in the past few years. The disease is transmitted through small breaks in the skin during sexual contact, or via congenital transmission in utero, either across the placenta or by contact with an active genital lesion during delivery. Estimated 5.7-6 million new cases are detected every year worldwide in the 15-49 years age group. An increased incidence has been reported in most populations with particular clusters in special groups like men who have se

[Progress on the application of respondent-driven sampling in population size estimation].

Respondent-driven sampling (RDS) is a method of sampling specifically for hidden populations, often applied to transgender women, female sex workers, men who have sex with men, and other groups that are difficult to identify and contact because of stigma and legal constraints. However, this method is gradually applied to the general population. With the continuous improvement of RDS, studies find that the network size of RDS samples can be weighted to estimate the overall situation and population size. This article summarizes the current application progress of RDS in population size estimatio
