In this work, we estimate the proportions of transmissions occurring in main vs. casual partnerships, and by the sexual role, infection stage, and testing and treatment history of the infected partner, for men who have sex with men (MSM) in the US and Peru. We use dynamic, stochastic models based in exponential random graph models (ERGMs), obtaining inputs from multiple large-scale MSM surveys. Parallel main partnership and casual sexual networks are simulated. Each man is characterized by age, race, circumcision status, sexual role behavior, and propensity for unprotected anal intercourse (UA

BACKGROUND: The increasing use of point-of-care HIV tests in sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics allows for rapid identification of patients with newly diagnosed HIV infection who may also be at risk for more common sexually transmitted infections. Positive point-of-care HIV test results might be used to identify and provide presumptive treatment to patients who are likely to be coinfected with gonorrhea (GC) and chlamydia (CT).
METHODS: Data from 6864 STD clinic visits by men who have sex with men (MSM) with no history of HIV infection and an HIV antibody test at that visit were analy

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To identify recent progress and emerging problems in addressing syphilis among men who have sex with men.
RECENT FINDINGS: A resurgence of syphilis has occurred among men who have sex with men in many developed countries. Infection has been associated with HIV coinfection, multiple partners, and recreational drug use. Unlike HIV, oral sex appears to be a common route of syphilis transmission. Many prevention approaches have shown, at best, modest success. Variable clinical presentation and potentially inconclusive lab tests make diagnosis confusing.
SUMMARY: As the infecti

Before 2003, lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) was rare in developed nations. Several large clusters of LGV in men who have sex with men have been reported across Europe and in the United States of America (USA) since 2003. LGV is caused by L1, L2 and L3 serovars of Chlamydia trachomatis and is a sexually transmitted infection. LGV causes genital ulcers, infected inguinal lymph nodes (buboes) and proctitis/proctocolitis. Treatment with a three-week course of doxycycline prevents rectal strictures, bowel obstruction, bowel perforation and possibly death. Clinicians seeing men who have sex with men

We describe two cases of neurosyphilis whose diagnosis was based on ocular symptoms. Both patients were treated in the Eye Department for bilateral uveitis, and they were tested serologically positive for syphilis. The diagnoses of neurosyphilis were confirmed by demonstration of CSF pleocytosis and specific intrathecal antibody production. Both patients were treated with 21 million units of penicillin IV daily for 15 days. Ocular syphilis is an unusual manifestation of the disease but should be considered in patients with uveitis of uncertain origin, especially if the patient has a rash and/o

OBJECTIVES: Although thicker (stronger) condoms are advocated in western Europe for anal intercourse between men, empirical evidence supporting their greater efficacy is lacking. The present study aimed to determine whether a thicker condom is less likely to fail (break or slip off) than a standard (regular thickness) condom, and to establish factors associated with condom failure among gay men.
DESIGN: A total of 283 homosexual couples participated in a double-blind, randomized, controlled trial of a standard and a thicker condom.
METHODS: Each couple was allocated nine of either condom typ

During 1994, local, state, and territorial health departments reported to CDC 34,974 cases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) among men whose only reported HIV exposure was sexual contact with other men. Although previous reports indicated progressively smaller annual increases in cases of AIDS among men who have sex with men (MSM) (1), male-to-male sexual contact continues to represent the most frequently reported mode of HIV transmission among persons with AIDS. This report summarizes trends during January 1989-June 1994 in the occurrence of AIDS among MSM aged > or = 13 years.

BACKGROUND: Sex with multiple partners (SMP) is one of the important contributing factors for contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among adolescents and young adults, especially among Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual (LGB) youth. Past studies mainly focus on examining associations of alcohol or club drugs use with unprotected sexual behaviors among adult homo/bisexual men, while little is known about the temporal association between marijuana use (MU) and SMP among LGB youth.
METHODS: This study examined the relationship between MU and SMP among LGB adolescents and young adults. Gener

BACKGROUND: Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has been shown to reduce human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) viral replication and ultimately achieve viral suppression and eliminate HIV transmission. However, little is known about the impact of viral suppression on high-risk behaviors and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the rates of current syphilis infection in virally suppressed people living with HIV (PLWH) and whether with the duration of ART can reduce the current syphilis infection in eastern China.
METHOD: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of

BACKGROUND: Stigma differentially influences HIV and STI care among MSM, especially regarding partner notification practices. Recognizing the heterogeneous behaviors/identities within the category "MSM," we used mixed-methods to assess sexual risk behaviors among men who have sex with men only (MSMO) and behaviorally bisexual MSM (MSMW) with HIV and/or other STIs.
METHODS: MSMO/MSMW recently diagnosed (< 30 days) with HIV, syphilis, urethritis, or proctitis completed a cross-sectional survey assessing sexual risk behaviors, anticipated disclosure, and sexual partnership characteristics (n = 3

BACKGROUND: In order to evaluate natural history, clinical features, and socioeconomic aspects in HIV-infected women, a prospective study comprising 695 HIV-infected patients was performed at our department.
METHODS: Demographic data, CD4+ T-lymphocyte counts, human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) plasma loads, AIDS indicator diseases and socioeconomic variables were recorded. Prognostic factors for survival were evaluated by univariate and multivariate analysis. Data of men and women were compared.
RESULTS: The mean age of the 150 women (29.4 +/- 9.4 years) was significantly lower than tha

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is commonly transmitted, during homosexual and heterosexual intercourse, through the rectal and cervicovaginal mucosa, foreskin and urethral epithelia. However, there is uncertainty about HIV transmission through the oral mucosa by oral sex. We have carried out a comparative immunohistological investigation of primate oral, cervicovaginal, foreskin, urethral and rectal epithelia for potential HIV receptors. We investigated epithelial tissues for CD4 glycoprotein, which is the principal receptor for HIV, Fc receptors of IgG for binding HIV-IgG antibody complex

The present study examined the attachment patterns distribution of 60 lesbian mothers, 50 gay fathers, and 42 heterosexual parents through assisted reproduction and their 76 children, using the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) and the Friends and Family Interview (FFI), respectively. The study also explored the intergenerational transmission of attachment through reflective functioning (AAI-RF). All families lived in Italy and children were aged 6-12 years (Myears = 8.11, SD = 2.17; 48.68% assigned female at birth). The AAI patterns distribution was similar across family types and did not sign

In 2015, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) released clinical advisories on rising cases of ocular syphilis. We examined the association between eye disease and syphilis infection among primary care and sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinic patients attending an urban lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) health center. We conducted a retrospective medical record review of all patients who underwent syphilis testing at Howard Brown Health between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2015. Confirmed eye diagnosis was based o

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people are increasingly aware that disproportionately high smoking rates severely impact the health of their communities. Motivated to make a change, a group of LGBT community members, policymakers, and researchers from Atlanta carried out a community-based participatory research (CBPR) project.
OBJECTIVES: This formative research study sought to identify recommendations for culturally relevant smoking prevention and cessation interventions that could improve the health of Atlanta's LGBT communities.
METHODS: Data presented here come

This study investigated the role of therapy practices and the therapy relationship on lesbian and gay clients' feelings about their current therapist. Participants were 76 lesbian and 40 gay male clients ranging in age from 19 to 69 years. The real relationship was found to predict an additional 8% of variance in clients' positive feelings about their therapist above and beyond months in therapy, therapy practices, and the working alliance. However, therapy practices did not add significance in predicting lesbian and gay clients' feelings about their therapist beyond the working alliance and t

INTRODUCTION: The diagnostic criteria of sexual dysfunctions (SDs) are paramount for the development of sexual medicine as reliable diagnoses are essential to guide treatment plans. Prior Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) classifications based definitions of SD mostly on expert opinions and included imprecise terms. The validity of diagnoses of SD has only recently been challenged, and efforts are made to make more operational definitions.
AIM: This paper aims to compare and contrast the recently released Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-Fifth Ed

This article examines (a) variation in rates of sexual harassment across mode (e.g., in-person, online) and type of harassment, (b) the impact of sexual harassment (i.e., distressing vs. non-distressing), and (c) how sexual harassment is similarly and differently experienced across sexual orientation and gender identity groups. Data were collected as part of the Teen Health and Technology online survey of 5,907 13 to 18 year-old Internet users in the United States. Past year sexual harassment was reported by 23-72% of youth, depending upon sexual orientation, with the highest rates reported by
