AIMS: To clarify the mechanisms of electrocardiographic abnormalities in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, 102 patients were examined with cardiac magnetic resonance. Distribution and magnitude of hypertrophy and late-enhancement were correlated with electrocardiographic abnormalities.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Abnormal Q waves were associated with greater upper anterior septal thickness (22+/-7 mm vs. 18+/-5 mm, P=0.001) and increased ratios of upper anterior septum to mean inferolateral (P=0.01), anterolateral (P=0.002), apical (P=0.001), and right ventricular (P=0.001) wall thickness. There was no r

INTRODUCTION: The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that local angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) was involved in the cardiac hypertrophy induced by sinoaortic denervation (SAD) in rats.
METHODS: Experiment 1: Six weeks after SAD of rats, components of renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in left ventricles were assayed by quantitative real-time PCR and Western blotting analysis. Experiment 2: Rats were divided into five groups treated as follows: (1) sham-operated group; (2) SAD group; (3) SAD group treated with angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R) antagonist losartan (10 mg·kg(-

OBJECTIVE: Aortic stenosis (AS) patients with eccentric hypertrophy (Ecc-LVH) have increased left ventricular (LV) size and possibly reduced ejection fraction (EF). However, previous studies suggest worse outcomes with concentric remodeling and hypertrophy. We hypothesized that Ecc-LVH pattern in AS patients will also be associated with greater heart failure (HF) and all-cause mortality (ACM).
METHODS: We queried the electronic medical record from a community-based university practice for all AS patients. We included patients with >60 days follow-up and interpretable Doppler echocardiograms.

INTRODUCTION: While concentric left ventricular hypertrophy (cLVH) predominates in non-dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease (CKD), eccentric left ventricular hypertrophy (eLVH) is most prevalent in dialysis-dependent CKD stage 5 (CKD5D). In these patients, the risk of sudden death is 5× higher than in individuals with cLVH. Currently, it is unknown which factors determine left ventricular (LV) geometry and how it changes over time in CKD5D.
METHODS: Data from participants of the CONvective TRAnsport Study who underwent serial transthoracic echocardiography were used. Based on left ventri

Left ventricular outflow tract stenosis represents 1-2 % of all congenital anomalies. In particular, tunnel-like left ventricular stenosis which is one type of fixed left ventricular outflow stenosis requires aggressive surgery to reduce the left ventricular outflow gradient. The purpose of the modified Konno procedure is to release fixed left ventricular outflow tract stenosis while preserving the native aortic valve and its function. Although the clinical results of the modified Konno procedure are acceptable, it is necessary to precisely understand this procedure and the anatomy of the left

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes of angiotensin II receptors expression in cardiomyocytes of both ventricles in pigs with experimental ventricular septal defect (VSD).
METHODS: Nineteen young pigs were divided into 3 groups: the pigs that received operation to produce experimental VSD, the pigs that underwent sham-operation, and the pigs as normal control. One month after the operation, the pigs were catheterized and then put to death; the cardiomyocytes were taken from their ventricles and were isolated. Radioligand binding assay was done to measure the Bmax and KD of angiotensin II rec

BACKGROUND: Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is associated with low-grade inflammation, left ventricular hypertrophy and increased cardiovascular mortality, but the association between inflammatory markers and parameters of adverse cardiac remodeling is unknown. We investigated the relationship between C-reactive protein (CRP), the essential amino acid tryptophan and its pro-inflammatory derivatives kynurenine and quinolinic acid (QUIN) with echocardiographic parameters.
METHODS: Cross-sectional baseline data from the "Eplerenone in Primary Hyperparathyroidism" trial were analyzed. Patients

Myocardial hypertrophy and cardiac dysfunction frequently occur in newborns of diabetic mothers. The authors hypothesized that wall hypertrophy or disproportionate left ventricular wall thickness in newborns of diabetic mothers may affect both QT and QTc dispersion. This study aimed to assess whether left ventricular hypertrophy affects the QT variables of infants born to diabetic mothers. This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted with 47 consecutively selected neonates of gestational diabetic mothers and 30 healthy neonates born to healthy mothers. All the subjects were evaluated d

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) represents systemic metabolic dysfunction and is significantly associated with cardiovascular disease. However, its specific impact on cardiac remodeling in non-ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy (NIDCM) remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the impact of MAFLD and liver fibrosis on biventricular remodeling in patients with NIDCM.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We evaluated 293 NIDCM patients using comprehensive echocardiography. Liver fibrosis was assessed via the NAFLD Fibrosis Score (NFS). Associations were anal

BACKGROUND: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a multisystemic clinical condition characterized by an irreversible deterioration of renal function that invariably progresses to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Cardiovascular affectation portends morbidity and mortality in chronic kidney disease.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to compare the prevalence of changes in function, and geometry of the left ventricle in children with CKD and their controls.
METHODOLOGY: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study. Children aged 6 to 17 years with features suggestive of CKD along with age and sex-m

Transverse aortic constriction (TAC) in mice is the most popular model to mimic pressure overload heart disease. In this study, we developed a convenient, quick, and less invasive new TAC mice model. Briefly, after anesthetization, endotracheal intubation was then performed, and the endotracheal tube was connected to a ventilator. The second intercostal space was opened and then the home-made retractors were used to push aside the thymus gently. A tunnel under the aortic arch was made and a segment of 6-0 monofilament polypropylene suture which had been threaded through a specifically modified

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? Can impaired deformational indicators for genotype positive for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in subjects that do not exhibit a left-ventricular wall hypertrophy condition (G+LVH-) be determined using non-invasive 3D echocardiography? What is the main finding and its importance? Using 3D-STE and modern shape analysis, peculiar deformational impairments can be detected in G+LVH- subjects that can be classified with good accuracy. Moreover, the patterns of impairment are located mainly on the apical region in agreement with other evidence c

INTRODUCTION: Asymmetric dimethylarginin (ADMA) is an endogenous inhibitor of endothelial nitric oxide synthase, considered an effector of endothelial dysfunction. Among multiple diseases associated with elevated ADMA, chronic renal disease is often mentioned. ADMA is thought to be related to certain adverse cardiovascular effects of chronic uremia. The association between left ventricular (LV) structure and function and ADMA has been studied in numerous papers, but only few of them addressed this issue in end‑stage renal disease (ESRD).
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to analyze associa

By unloading the failing myocardium and permitting tissue-based investigations before and after unloading, recent clinical use of ventricular assist devices (VADs) has provided a unique window into the pathophysiology of advanced heart failure in humans. Work to date has provided novel insights into the load-dependent modulation of myocardial hypertrophy, contractility, calcium homeostasis, adrenergic responsiveness, bioenergetics, cytokines, and gene expression. In general, the documented effects of VAD support on the failing heart have been diverse and often dramatic. Moreover, the phenotypi

BACKGROUND: The indications for operative intervention for symptomatic hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) in infancy and childhood are not well defined because of the rarity of the lesion. The traditional surgical procedure consists of septal myectomy. In an attempt to further improve the outcome of HOCM associated with concentric left ventricular hypertrophy and aortic valve disease in infancy, we have combined resection of the left ventricular septum and free wall with a Ross-Konno procedure.
METHODS: Three infants (aged 3, 4, and 10 months) with HOCM (left ventricular aortic gr

Left ventricular (LV) shape in chronic volume overload due to aortic regurgitation is commonly described as rounder than in normal subjects. This statement derives from observations of qualitative nature or based on the measure of eccentricity index. We analyzed LV shape and function in 16 normal subjects (N) and in 24 patients with chronic pure aortic regurgitation (AR), without coronary artery disease or associated mitral regurgitation. LV cavity geometry was quantitatively evaluated from end-diastolic and end-systolic outlines obtained in 30 degrees RAO angiographic projection, by calculati

In non-cardioembolic stroke patients, the cardiac manifestations of high blood pressure are of particular interest. Emerging data suggest that echocardiographically determined left ventricular hypertrophy is independently associated with risk of ischemic stroke. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the frequency of different patterns of left ventricular (LV) remodeling and hypertrophy in a group of consecutive patients admitted with non-cardioembolic stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). In particular, we were interested in how often the relative wall thickness (RWT) was abn

Asymmetric septal hypertrophy with abnormal thallium scintigram and elevated cardiac enzymes were observed in five patients and were studied with special reference to the clinical significance of their clinicopathological features. They were not familial cardiomyopathy patients. Two of the five patients (Cases 1 and 2) exhibited the clinical features characteristic of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy without abnormal thallium perfusion and serum cardiac enzyme levels. A right endomyocardial biopsy for Case 1 disclosed myocardial fibrosis in addition to hypertrophy and disarray of myocardial fibers.

Two children, aged one year and nine months, and six years, both with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, presented as severe right ventricular outflow obstruction were presented. Initially, both of them were suspected of having heart disease because of precordial systolic murmurs. Their tentative diagnosis was pulmonary stenosis. Their apex cardiograms and carotid pulse waves were not diagnostic. Asymmetrical septal hypertrophy with systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve was identified by echocardiography in both cases. Cardiac catheterization revealed left ventricular outflow tract pressure g
