Vitiligo is a hypopigmentation disorder that is caused by the loss of melanocyte activity for melanin pigment generation. Vitiligo is distinguished by the existence of white macules. Vitiligo affects 0.1%-2% of individuals of different populations, irrespective of skin color, ethnic origin, race, or age. Although the actual mechanism behind this disease is not yet known, it is thought to be caused by a cumulative effect of various mechanisms (e.g., neurohormonal, genetic, cytotoxic, oxidative stress, autoimmune, and biochemical). This article reviews the published literature on various treatme…

Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) is an autoimmune disease commonly affecting sun-exposed areas of the skin. Subjects with DLE have high-lev … ng-standing immune-mediated chronic inflammation and dysregulated healing characterized by atrophy, hypopigmentation or scarring inherent to DLE are risk factors for progression to SCC. We review some aspects of the pathogenesis of DLE and the possible roles of inflammation and photosensitivity in the carcinomatous transformation of DLE keratinocytes, and present …

BACKGROUND: Leprosy is primarily a disease of developmental countries. About 4 million people have or are disabled by leprosy. Eighty-six percent of leprosy patients reside in Southeast Asia and Brazil. India accounts for up to 70% of total cases.
AIM: To evaluate the incidence of orofacial lesions in treated leprosy patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty treated leprosy patients were examined clinically and the percentage of orofacial lesions were evaluated.
RESULTS: On evaluating the orofacial lesions, incidence of hypopigmentation on face and oral mucosa were highest (63%) followed by d…

UNLABELLED: Black henna tattoos have paraphenylenediamine (PPD), which contains a product of herbal origin, which due to its molecular characteristics is capable of inducing, in susceptible individuals, a type IV hypersensitivity reaction. It clinically manifests as a contact dermatitis that usually when it disappears, scarring and hypopigmentation are left in the injured area.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the case of a patient with hypersensitivity to henna tattoo and to present the most relevant phenomena associated with this condition.
CASE REPORT: The case of a 6 year-old patient with a black …

In this study, the decursin derivative dihydropyranocoumarin D2 (1) was selected for its effects on melanogenesis using a spontaneously immo … d in the absence or presence of PD98059 (a specific inhibitor of the ERK pathway). PD98059 restored hypopigmentation and the down-regulation of MITF induced by 1. Finally, MITF down-regulation by 1 was clearly restored by both chloroquine, a lysosomal proteolysis inhibitor, and MG132, a proteasome inhibitor.

Griscelli syndrome type 2 is a rare autosomal recessive primary immunodeficiency disease caused by a mutation in the RAB27A gene and characterized by oculocutaneous hypopigmentation and variable cellular immunodeficiency. We report the case of a 6-month-old infant with silvery hair, eyelashes, and eyebrows who was referred to our center because of fever and hepatosplenomegaly. Bone marrow studies indicated hemophagocytosis, whilst microscopic examination of the hair showed irregular agglomerations of pigment in hair shafts. Molecular analysis revealed a novel homozygous mutation in exon 5, nam…

BACKGROUND: Kindler syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder with neonatal blister formation, photosensitivity, atrophy, abnormal pigmentation, and fragility of the skin. Skin atrophy is more prominent on the extremities and the skin manifestations improve with age.
METHODS: We report three cases in a family which present the clinical and pathologic manifestations of Kindler syndrome.
RESULTS: All of the three cases reported here present skin changes on the extremities, face, and neck, including hyper- and hypopigmentation, atrophy, and telangiectasia. The condition in these cases started…

We identified a new spontaneous recessive mutation in the mouse, mhyp (mosaic hypopigmentation), in a screen for novel proviral integration sites in a multiple ecotropic provirus mapping stock. Integration of an 8.4-kb retrovirus results in mosaic loss of coat pigment in mhyp homozygotes. Patchy loss of pigmentation in the retinal pigmented epithelial layer of the eye with abnormal melanosomes is also evident. We mapped mhyp to mouse chromosome 7 and cloned the underlying gene. mhyp is a defect in the Trappc6a gene. Expression of Trappc6a is markedly diminished in mhyp homozygotes. The normal …

Albinism ocular type 1 (OA1) is an X-linked type of albinism that mainly effects pigment production in the eye, resulting in hypopigmentation of the retina, nystagmus, strabismus, foveal hypoplasia, abnormal crossing of the optic fibers, and reduced visual acuity. The OA1 gene is located on chromosome Xp22.32 and the coding sequence is divided into nine exons. The protein is an integral transmembrane protein that has weak similarities to G protein-coupled receptors. A total of 25 missense, two nonsense, nine frameshift, and five splicing mutations have been reported in the OA1 gene associated …

PURPOSE: To describe complications associated with laser resurfacing along with specific treatment recommendations.
METHODS: The authors' experiences with laser resurfacing complications are discussed in conjunction with a review of published reports. Current preoperative and postoperative regimens are also presented.
RESULTS: Postoperative erythema occurs in all patients and is considered a transient side effect, not a complication. Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, scarring, wound infections, milia, ectropion, pain, acneiform eruptions, pruritus, and contact dermatitis …

Many methods have been described for the treatment of gynecomastia. Eleven adolescent boys have been managed with a bipedicle technique. These patients were evaluated for nipple-areolar viability, scarring, patient satisfaction, and hematoma or seroma formation. The pedicles providing blood supply to the nipple-areolar complex are reliable and are derived from the dermis and glandular breast tissue, thus minimizing nipple-areolar necrosis and hypopigmentation as a complication of the procedure. A periareolar incision provides adequate exposure for safe dissection and excision of the breast tis…

Angelman's syndrome was described by Angelman in 1965 and since then 222 children with the syndrome have been reported: this paper reviews t … enotypes. A new symptom is keratoconus. The Angelman syndrome is associated with ocular and general hypopigmentation and in future studies this should be included in the clinical examination, thereby elucidating the possible role of the proximal chromosome 15 in the development of the neural crest.

Fibroma pendulans, commonly known as skin tag, is a benign protrusion of connective tissue that often develops groupwise in areas subjected to mechanical friction. Although generally harmless, they can become cosmetically concerning or painful if infarcted. Traditional removal methods, such as electrocautery and cryotherapy, often result in hypopigmentation or scarring. Lasers became interesting for skin-tag removal, but are they really more effective than classical scissor snip exisions? This study aimed to compare the efficacy, healing outcomes, and patient acceptance of scissor snip excisio…

Chemical leukoderma (CL) is an acquired depigmentation condition caused by repeated exposure to melanocytotoxic chemicals that can occur in the presence or absence of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Chemicals containing aromatic or aliphatic derivatives such as phenols and catechols have been shown to have melanocytotoxic properties that contribute to the pathogenesis of CL. Lesions are clinically and histologically indistinguishable from vitiligo and can occur in the absence of preexisting inflammatory cutaneous disease or vitiligo. CL often occurs after the use of personal care products o
