BACKGROUND AND AIM: The global burden of invasive fungal infections (IFIs) is emerging in immunologic deficiency status from various disease. Patients with acute-on-chronic hepatitis B liver failure (ACHBLF) are prone to IFI and their conditions are commonly exacerbated by IFI. However, little is known about the characteristics and risk factors for IFI in hospitalized ACHBLF patients.
METHODS: A total of 243 hospitalized ACHBLF patients were retrospectively enrolled from January 2010 to July 2023. We performed restricted cubic spline analysis to determine the non-linear associations between i

The maturity of full-term newborns was studied by immunological, biochemical, and ecogenetic methods. The study yielded basic immunochemical and ecogenetic evidence. It shows that chronic intrauterine hypoxia and unfavourable ecogenetic factors apparently influence concurrently and result in severe fetal immaturity.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify genetic markers and immunologic characteristics of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) antibody-positive patients with stiff-person syndrome (SPS).
METHODS: We conducted systemic immunogenetic studies in 11 GAD-positive patients: 8 with sporadic SPS and 3 from a three-generation family with very high GAD-ab titers but diverse symptomatology (one with GAD-epilepsy and SPS and 2 only with diabetes), by performing complete immunologic profile and whole-exome sequencing analysis.
RESULTS: Two genes expressed in immune and neuronal ti

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial stress and depressive disorder have been associated with cancer as putative contributors to worse prognosis. On the other hand, cancer diagnosis is a recognised life event that can contribute to distress and depressive states. Humoral and cellular inflammation can promote depressive disorder by means of decreased monoamine synthesis, glutamate neurotoxicity, neurogenesis and neuroplasticity, dysregulated hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and glucocorticoid resistance. This protocol objectives are to observe the interactions between psychosocial variables and biochem

BackgroundVaccines for SARS-CoV-2 have been considerably effective in reducing rates of infection and severe COVID-19. However, many patients, especially those who are immunocompromised due to cancer or other factors, as well as individuals who are unable to receive vaccines or are in resource-poor countries, will continue to be at risk for COVID-19. We describe clinical, therapeutic, and immunologic correlatives in two patients with cancer and severe COVID-19 who were treated with leflunomide after failing to respond to standard-of-care comprising remdesivir and dexamethasone. Both patients h

Influenza infections have high frequency and morbidity in HIV-infected pregnant women, underscoring the importance of vaccine-conferred protection. To identify the factors that determine vaccine immunogenicity in this group, we characterized the relationship of B- and T-cell responses to pandemic H1N1 (pH1N1) vaccine with HIV-associated immunologic and virologic characteristics. pH1N1 and seasonal-H1N1 (sH1N1) antibodies were measured in 119 HIV-infected pregnant women after two double-strength pH1N1 vaccine doses. pH1N1-IgG and IgA B-cell FluoroSpot, pH1N1- and sH1N1-interferon γ (IFNγ) and g

BACKGROUND: The longstanding concept of a Th1-Th2 dichotomy in leprosy, with Th1-predominant tuberculoid leprosy and Th2-predominant lepromatous leprosy (LL), has recently been challenged, and Cbl-b overexpression may emerge as an important factor in anergy and progression of LL. Moreover, Th17 and Th22 subsets have been identified as Th1-Th2 modulators in inflammatory skin diseases, most notably psoriasis, but their roles in leprosy have not yet been elucidated. The occurrence of pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia (PEH) with transepidermal elimination of mycobacteria in LL patients, which coul

Ganciclovir prophylactic regimens have been shown to be effective in renal transplant recipients at risk for primary (donor seropositive/recipient seronegative) and secondary (recipient seropositive) cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease. However, in addition to serologic factors, the type and intensity of the administered immunosuppression is a strong risk factor for CMV disease. Since January 1995, we have utilized a potent immunosuppressive protocol selectively in recipients at high risk for immunologic graft loss, defined as retransplant recipients, recipients with delayed graft function, non-Cauc

Hemolytic anemia in sickle disease involves both intravascular and extravascular destruction of erythrocytes. Since the latter presumably involves the reticuloendothelial system, we have examined interactions between sickle erythrocytes and macrophages. In erythrophagocytosis assays, 18.9 +/- 7.2% of human marrow macrophages ingest sickle RBCs, while only 3.1 +/- 2.1% ingest normal RBCs. This abnormality is not explained by reticulocytosis, and it is strongly dependent upon RBC density. The interaction between sickle RBCs and macrophages appears to be partly immunologic, since it is partially

Recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) is serious health problem affecting 2-5% of reproducing couples worldwide. It has long been suspected that nearly 80% of the unexplained RSAs are due to immunologic causes. Although the major tissue confronting the mother's immune system is the placental villous trophoblast, the immunological risk to the developing embryo is not great until the time of implantation. In addition, trophoblast is not sensible to lysis by NK cells, TNF-alpha or macrophages, but may be killed by lymphokine activated NK cells (LAK) and may undergo apoptosis in response to TNF-alp

BACKGROUND: Between 25% and 30% of children with peanut allergy (PA) have a relatively high-threshold peanut allergy (HTPA), with a single maximal tolerated dose (SMTD) higher than 100 mg of peanut protein (PP). However, this threshold may decrease with time, age, exercise, illness, sleep deprivation, and other covariates.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the feasibility of a simplified oral immunotherapy (OIT) protocol in a group of children with HTPA.
METHODS: Children with PA with an SMTD higher than 100 mg were placed on a 40-week OIT protocol of either 300 mg/d of PP or 100 mg/d for 20 weeks follo

The Good's syndrome (GS) is a low prevalence entity where thymoma often is associated with immunodeficiency. Patients may start presenting recurrent rhinosinusal infections, bronchopulmonary infections, haematological alterations and diarrhoea, secondary to immunodeficiency. They can also present respiratory symptoms and parathymic syndromes derived from the existence of thymoma, a slow-growing neoplasm located in the anterior mediastinum. We present the case of a 76-year-old man diagnosed with thymoma by image analysis, which had presented multiple episodes of pneumonia and two admissions to

Despite the administration of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) at a dose of 2 g/kg, approximately 3-5% of children with acute Kawasaki disease (KD) may develop coronary artery aneurysms. IVIg-resistance, defined as recrudescence of fever more than 36 h after IVIg completion, is a risk factor for coronary artery abnormalities. Thus, several adjunctive therapies are being evaluated for use in IVIg-resistant KD patients and in patients with coronary artery abnormalities. In this review the role of some of these adjunctive therapies in treatment of children with KD is discussed.

Memory B cells latently infected with Epstein-Barr virus (mB(Lats)) in the blood disappear rapidly on presentation with acute symptomatic primary infection (acute infectious mononucleosis [AIM]). They undergo a simple exponential decay (average half-life: 7.5 +/- 3.7 days) similar to that of normal memory B cells. The cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) response to immediate early (IE) lytic antigens (CTL(IEs)) also decays over this time period, but no such correlation was observed for the CTL response to lytic or latent antigens or to the levels of virions shed into saliva. We have estimated the ave

Leading biological hypotheses propose that biological changes may underlie major depressive disorder onset and relapse/recurrence. Here, we investigate if there is prospective evidence for biomarkers derived from leading theories. We focus on neuroimaging, gastrointestinal factors, immunology, neurotrophic factors, neurotransmitters, hormones, and oxidative stress. Searches were performed in Pubmed, Embase and PsychInfo for articles published up to 06/2019. References and citations of included articles were screened to identify additional articles. Inclusion criteria were having an MDD diagnos

Background/Objectives: Male infertility is a complex, multifactorial condition influenced by infectious, inflammatory, and autoimmune components. Immunological factors, though implicated in reproduction, remain poorly understood. This study aims to deepen the understanding of infections, inflammation, and autoimmune factors in male infertility, with a focus on immune-related disorders affecting the testes and epididymis-immunologically privileged but vulnerable sites. These factors can impair sperm quality through oxidative stress (ROS) and antisperm antibodies (ASA), further compromising fert

The morbidity and mortality of adult and pediatric chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) populations are mainly driven by cardiovascular disease (CVD). Improving CVD outcomes focuses on risk assessment of factors including diastolic blood pressure (DBP), systolic blood pressure (SBP), left ventricular mass index (LVMI), pulse pressure (PP), and pulse pressure index (PPi), which is calculated as PP/SBP. These markers are also proven predictors of CKD progression; however, their role in children has not been established. This study aims to evaluate the relationship betw

Introduction Triggering the immune system via antigenic stimulation at the time of spinal fusion surgery may enhance bone morphogenesis and result in successful bony arthrodesis. We sought to demonstrate that bone morphogenesis could be enhanced via antigenic immunologic stimulation of a surgical fusion site. Methods New Zealand white rabbits underwent non-instrumented posterolateral fusion of L5-6 with implantation of either an immunologically activated graft (inert beta-tricalcium phosphate) or harvested autograft. Fusion was evaluated using plain radiographs, micro-computed tomography (CT),

Among autoimmune diseases, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients have a unique predisposition to develop infections, which represents one of their main causes of morbidity and mortality. Many infections occur at disease diagnosis in the absence of immunosuppressive therapy, suggesting that the immunological abnormalities in SLE patients might be fundamental for the development of this complication. The aim of this study was to address the main clinical and immunological features associated with the development of infection and to create and validate a compound clinical-immunological infe
