OBJECTIVE: To observe the impacts of electro-acupuncture (EA) and psychological intervention (PI) on impulsive behavior among internet addiction (IA) adolescents.
METHODS: Thirty-two IA adolescents were allocated to either EA (16 cases) or PI (16 cases) group by a randomized digital table. Subjects in the EA group received EA treatment and subjects in the PI group received cognition and behavior therapy. All adolescents underwent 45-d intervention. Sixteen healthy volunteers were recruited into a control group. Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11) scores, Young's Internet Addiction Test (IAT)…

The 48,XXYY syndrome is a distinct clinical and genetic entity, with an incidence of 1:17,000 to 1:50,000 newborns. Patients often access mental healthcare services due to behavior problems, such as aggressiveness and impulsiveness, and are frequently intellectually disabled. We report a case of a patient with 48,XXYY syndrome treated in a general adult psychiatry department.A 23-year-old man was frequently admitted to our inpatient psychiatric unit (14 admissions in five years) due to disruptive behavior, including self harm, aggression to objects and animals, and fire-setting behavior, in a

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is currently defined as a cognitive/behavioral developmental disorder where all clinical criteria are behavioral. Inattentiveness, overactivity, and impulsiveness are presently regarded as the main clinical symptoms. The dynamic developmental behavioral theory is based on the hypothesis that altered dopaminergic function plays a pivotal role by failing to modulate nondopaminergic (primarily glutamate and GABA) signal transmission appropriately. A hypofunctioning mesolimbic dopamine branch produces altered reinforcement of behavior and deficient e

BACKGROUND: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neuro-developmental disorders of childhood and adolescence. Studies focusing on the relationship of infectious agents and ADHD are scarce. It is also known that cerebellar injury may lead to hyperactive behavior. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between viral agents of cerebellitis and the diagnosis of ADHD.
METHODS: The study group was formed of 60 consecutive ADHD patients and 30 healthy children. IgG levels for VZV; HSV-1, CMV, Measles, Mumps, Rubella and EBV were evaluated.
RESULTS: Males w

Disruptive Behaviors Disorders (DBD), including Oppositional-Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), are fairly common and highly impairing childhood behavior disorders that can be diagnosed as early as preschool. Prenatal exposure to testosterone may be particularly relevant to these early-emerging DBDs that exhibit a sex-biased prevalence rate favoring males. The current study examined associations between preschool DBD symptom domains and prenatal exposure to testosterone measured indirectly via right 2D:4D finger-length ratios. The study sample consisted

Anticonvulsants, notably those which modulate GABA activity, have shown efficacy in reducing aggressive behavior. Previously, we found dose-related decreases in human aggressive responding following acute tiagabine administration. Here, we examined the effects of chronic tiagabine over a 5-week period. Twelve individuals at increased risk for aggressive and violent behavior (currently on parole/probation with personality and/or substance use disorders) were randomly assigned to placebo (n = 6) or an escalating dose sequence of placebo, 4 mg, 8 mg, 12 mg, placebo (n = 6). Data were analyzed usi

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine use is associated with neurometabolite alterations and increased impulsivity, but relationships between neurometabolites and specific impulsivity dimensions remain unclear, particularly during early abstinence when relapse risk is high and recovery is dynamic.
METHODS: We studied 20 recently abstinent individuals and 21 age-matched controls. Single-voxel MRS was acquired in the bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and caudate (CAUD) to quantify N-acetylaspartate (NAA), myo-inositol (mI),

Obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) are common and often chronic mental illnesses, characterized by recurring, intrusive thoughts, ideas and impulses (obsessions) and repetitive, stereotypical behaviors (compulsions). Etiopathogenetically, OCD is explained by a complex interplay of genetics and epigenetics, neurotransmission, imbalances in cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical circuits, as well as learning mechanism and environmental factors. In ICD-11, OCD is now classified in the chapter "Obsessive-compulsive and related disorders", which share compulsive and impulsive behavioral patterns. This …

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is a protozoan parasite present in around a third of the human population. Infected individuals are commonly asymptomatic, though recent reports have suggested that infection might influence aspects of the host's behavior. In particular, Toxoplasma infection has been linked to schizophrenia, suicide attempt, differences in aspects of personality and poorer neurocognitive performance. However, these studies are often conducted in clinical samples or convenience samples.
METHODS/RESULTS: In a population-representative birth-cohort of individuals tested

An influential model suggests that dopamine signals the difference between predicted and experienced reward. In this way, dopamine can act as a learning signal that can shape behaviors to maximize rewards and avoid punishments. Dopamine is also thought to invigorate reward seeking behavior. Loss of dopamine signaling is the major abnormality in Parkinson's disease. Dopamine agonists have been implicated in the occurrence of impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease patients, the most common being pathological gambling, compulsive sexual behavior, and compulsive buying. Recently, a numbe

Pathological gambling is one manifestation of impulse control disorders. The biological underpinnings of these disorders remain elusive and treatment is far from ideal. Animal models of impulse control disorders are a critical research tool for understanding this condition and for medication development. Modeling such complex behaviors is daunting, but by its deconstruction, scientists have recapitulated in animals critical aspects of gambling. One aspect of gambling is cost/benefit decision-making wherein one weighs the anticipated costs and expected benefits of a course of action. Risk/rewar

INTRODUCTION: The synthesis and characterization of new highly potent and selective dopamine (DA) D3 receptor antagonists has permitted to characterize the role of the DA D3 receptor in the control of drug-seeking behavior and in the pathophysiology of impulse control disorders and schizophrenia.
AREAS COVERED: In the present review, the authors will first describe most recent classes of DA D3 receptor antagonists by reviewing about 43 patent applications during the 2007 - 2012 period; they will then outline the biological rationale in support of the use of selective DA D3 receptor antagonist

PURPOSE: Deviant peer association is a robust risk factor for offending, that is, any behavior that violates a criminal law. This can include behaviors like drug use, violence, and theft; among others. Autism is a neurodivergent condition characterized by both atypical cognitive development and challenges with social interaction and communication. Despite these impairments, there is a dearth of research focused on the relationship between autism and deviant peer association. Relatedly, there exists no research examining the role that dual systems model constructs (sensation-seeking and impulse

BACKGROUND: At least 14% of Parkinson disease (PD) patients develop impulse control disorders (ICDs). The pathophysiology behind these behaviors and the impact of deep brain stimulation in a real-life setting remain unclear.
OBJECTIVES: We prospectively examined the impact of bilateral subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) on ICDs in PD patients, as well as the relationship between impaired sensorimotor gaiting and impulsivity.
METHODS: Patients undergoing bilateral STN-DBS were assessed for ICDs preoperatively and 1-year postoperatively using a validated questionnaire (QUIP-R

To conduct a latent profile analysis (LPA) in eating disorder (ED) patients using temperament and character (TCI-R) measures as indicators. 1312 ED patients including those with anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN) and EDNOS were assessed. The final LPA solution was validated using demographics, clinical variables, ED symptomatology (EDI-2) and impulsive behaviors. The best-fitting model consisted of a six-profile solution using the seven subscales of the TCI-R. These profiles were labeled: "self-focused", "inhibited", "average", "impulsive", "adaptive" and "maladaptive". Validation ana…

The adult patient who presents for psychiatric evaluation with symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) poses specific challenges to the treating psychiatrist. Symptoms include trouble focusing, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior. Patients may experience behavioral, mood, and cognitive issues. Co-occurrence of anxiety, boredom, sleep deprivation, or mood dysregulation may be reported. In addition, patients may have associated learning disabilities, either identified or undiagnosed. Symptoms can range from mild to severe. Many adults are unaware that they have ADHD, but th…

Antisocial behavior, substance use, and impulsive and aggressive personality traits often co-occur, forming a coherent spectrum of personality and psychopathology. In the current research, the authors developed a novel quantitative model of this spectrum. Over 3 waves of iterative data collection, 1,787 adult participants selected to represent a range across the externalizing spectrum provided extensive data about specific externalizing behaviors. Statistical methods such as item response theory and semiparametric factor analysis were used to model these data. The model and assessment instrume

BACKGROUND: Impulse Control Disorders (ICDs) are an eclectic group of conditions in which a person has a drive, urge, or temptation, to perform a potentially harmful act, or fails to resist an impulse.
METHODS: Authors reviewed the current medical literature addressing this diverse group of disorders.
RESULTS: Although the behaviors associated with these conditions can cause a great deal of suffering for patients and their families, they have remained relatively under-researched and poorly characterized.
CONCLUSIONS: Recent studies have explored both pharmacological and psychosocial treatme
