Health risk behaviors: prevention priorities among Portuguese incarcerated males.

PURPOSE: Incarcerated people have been identified as a vulnerable population prone to health risk behaviors (HRBs). This study aims to compare a set of HRBs in Portuguese incarcerated males with a community-matched control group and explore the influence of social-emotional competences and self-control on these behaviors. The authors expect that incarcerated males would present more HRBs in comparison to the community sample. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The study included 573 participants (312 incarcerated males and 251 males from the community). FINDINGS: Incarcerated males exhibited highe

Voices Beyond Bars: Formerly Incarcerated Women's Barriers and Facilitators to Reintegration.

Formerly incarcerated women (FIW) face personal, societal, and systemic barriers to reintegration. Occupational therapy professionals (OTPs) are called to support marginalized groups and advocate for change. Guided by the Framework of Occupational Justice, this qualitative study examined how barriers and facilitators shape FIW's occupational participation and experiences of occupational injustice. Interviews with 20 FIW explored post-incarceration experiences in home, work, health, and social engagement. Data were analyzed thematically and organized into personal, societal, and systemic catego…

Cervical cancer screening in incarcerated women: deprived of freedom or deprived of health?

OBJECTIVES: to reflect on and discuss the reality of cervical cancer screening among incarcerated women. METHODS: theoretical-reflective st … e irregularity in the supply, suggesting a weakness and inconsistency in healthcare. The purpose of incarceration may be to deprive offenders of freedom, but not to deny their rights to health. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: the reflections presented here emphasize the importance of nursing in conducting screening, follow-up, and health education actions, particularly …

Outcomes and Care Needs of Infants Born to Individuals Incarcerated During Pregnancy.

The rapid growth of incarceration of women in the United States has been accompanied by an increase in the number of pregnant individuals experiencing incarceration. Pregnant individuals in prisons and jails are at a higher risk for poor perinatal health outcomes. Existing data on these outcomes are limited, and research often only reflects single institutions or geographic regions. There is currently no consistent nationwide tracking system, and most existing research focuses solely on maternal health outcomes. To address this gap, this review centers on infant outcomes among those born to in…

Laparoscopic Diagnosis of an Incarcerated Ileal Conduit in an Inguinal Hernia: A Case Report.

Ileal conduit creation is a common urinary diversion after radical cystectomy, though complications such as obstruction can occur. We report … nduit incarcerated within an inguinal hernia, establishing the definitive diagnosis. Although rare, incarceration of the ileal conduit should be considered in the differential diagnosis of urinary tract obstruction in patients with an ileal conduit, particularly when the cause of obstruction is unclear.

Violence Exposure, Mental Health, Cognitive Functioning, and Disabilities in Incarcerated Youth.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of the present study was to ascertain incidence rates of violence exposure (VE) and disabilities in a population of incarcerated male adolescents using records searches, survey research, and individual academic and cognitive testing. METHOD: A sample of 115 incarcerated male youth completed self-reported measures of VE, including adverse childhood experiences (ACE), child abuse and neglect, interpersonal Violence experiences (IPV), and community violence exposure (CV), and current functioning and individual testing of cognition and disability diagnosis (both cognitive and

A new technique to reposition an incarcerated gravid uterus based on a biomechanical concept.

INTRODUCTION: An incarcerated gravid uterus (IGU) is a rare but serious obstetrical complication. Currently, there is no consensus on the optimal treatment when conservative reduction techniques have failed. Often, maneuvers with increased force are applied or a surgical intervention is the final reserved measure. Both are associated with an increased risk for the mother and child. In this technical report, we present a novel, minimally invasive technique to reduce an incarcerated uterus based on a biomechanical concept. METHOD: To reduce an IGU, we apply saline fluid intraabdominally under s

Adult Bochdalek hernia incarcerated after laparoscopic nephrectomy: a case report.

Adult Bochdalek hernia (BH) is rare and often asymptomatic, but it can occasionally lead to life-threatening complications such as bowel obstruction or strangulation. Latent BHs may become clinically apparent following abdominal surgery, possibly due to increased intra-abdominal pressure or postoperative anatomical changes. We report the case of an 81-year-old man who developed an incarcerated left-sided BH after laparoscopic nephrectomy for upper tract urothelial carcinoma. The patient presented with acute bowel obstruction caused by herniation of the transverse colon into the thoracic cavity

De Garengeot Hernia Presenting as a Rare Cause of Incarcerated Femoral Hernia.

De Garengeot hernia is defined as the presence of the appendix within a femoral hernia sac and represents a rare surgical condition. Its clinical presentation closely resembles that of an incarcerated or strangulated femoral hernia, often leading to delayed or intraoperative diagnosis. We report the case of an elderly woman who presented with acute right-groin pain and an irreducible groin mass concerning for an incarcerated femoral hernia. Emergent open exploration through an inguinal approach revealed a gangrenous appendix within the femoral canal. Appendectomy and primary tissue repair were

Perforated Cameron's Ulcer from Incarcerated Paraesophageal Hernia with Gastric Volvulus.

BACKGROUND: Cameron ulcers are linear erosions or ulcerations in the setting of large hiatal hernias with potential to lead to life-threatening complications. We report a rare complication of a Cameron ulcer in the setting of an incarcerated paraesophageal hernia with gastric volvulus. CASE DESCRIPTION: An 84 year old female presented in shock from gastric perforation. Imaging demonstrated significant pneumoperitoneum, free fluid, and a large incarcerated paraesophageal hiatal hernia with gastric volvulus. The patient underwent diagnostic laparoscopy revealing a perforated Cameron ulcer with

Laparoscopic approach to inguinal hernia with incarcerated ovary in a patient with endometrial neoplasia.

Ovarian inguinal herniation is a rare clinical entity. It can be safely managed laparoscopically, even in patients with concurrent gynaecological malignancies requiring radical hysterectomy. We present the case of a middle-aged woman admitted for severe anaemia and progressive weakness. Imaging revealed endometrial cancer and a right inguinal hernia containing an 8 cm lesion of indeterminate origin. MRI identified strangulated ovarian tissue within the hernia, and histopathology confirmed a low-grade endometrioid adenocarcinoma. The patient underwent a planned laparoscopic procedure, including r

Health disparities among incarcerated populations: a crucial laboratory and pathology review.

BACKGROUND: The United States notoriously has one of the highest rates of incarceration in the world, yet scant attention to the health care needs of those incarcerated exists within laboratory medicine and pathology training and education. This article explores health disparities among incarcerated and released individuals regarding diagnostic laboratory testing and pathology services. METHODS: A literature search was conducted for articles published between 2002 and 2023 using keywords including "healthcare," "incarcerated," "laboratory services," "pathology services," and "health insurance…

Lung Cancer Screening in the Incarcerated Population Through a Community Imaging Partnership.

Limited data exist on cancer screening in carceral facilities. This study evaluates the feasibility and outcomes of a population-based lung cancer screening initiative in a carceral setting. This is a retrospective review of a lung cancer screening event at the Rhode Island Department of Corrections. Sentenced individuals meeting U.S. Preventive Services Task Force age criteria for lung cancer screening were mailed a letter asking about their smoking history. Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scans were offered to individuals who responded and met the criteria. Retrospective analyses examine

Atypical functional connectome is associated with low reflective functioning in incarcerated adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: While functional neuroimaging studies have reported on the neural correlates of severe antisocial behaviors, such as delinquency, little is known about whole brain resting state functional connectivity (FC) of incarcerated adolescents (IA). The aim of the present study is to identify potential differences in resting state connectivity between a group of male IA, compared to community adolescents (CA). The second objective is to investigate the relations among FC and psychological factors associated with delinquent behaviors, namely psychopathic traits (callous unemotional traits,
